Default To Try For The Sun Original Version

I apologise if this has been posted before...

I was listening to a Donovan album of my mother's today, and although I don't particularly like Donovan, I did think that maybe I should share the original 1966 version of To Try For The Sun with anyone on here who hasn't heard it. Very different to the one we know!

Ha. That's awful. Kind of amazing how Lindsey found an excellent song in there somewhere and brought it out.

Funny actually how listening to Donovan reminded me how my parents used to play him when I was a kid. I got scared when I realised I actually knew the words to some of the songs. Haven't heard them for maybe 25 years...

England's answer to Dylan? I don't think so...

I like the Donovan version. I have his Early Years Greatest Hits and some of it's really good. Check out Goldwatch Blues and Catch the Wind.

The different versions of TTFTS are so different they're almost different songs.

Actually the only Donovan tracks now I have (other than TTFTS) are Catch the Wind, Josie, Universal Soldier, Donna Donna, Goldwatch Blues (which I remember the words to from my childhood), and Jersey Thursday.

Still isn't the answer to Dylan though...

Funnily enough I think I prefer the Donovan version to the Lindsey version, but then again its generally recognised I'm not a Lindsey solo fan after Out of the Cradle.

Of course Lindsey changes it to "gypsy girl" though...kind of makes the song more relevant to Lindsey doesn't it!

Is this the same Donovan who wrote the song Jennifer Juniper about Jenny Boyd before Mick Fleetwood married her? (His first wife)?

Yes it is that Donovan and I love him and in particular his song Catch the Wind (download that now). But Lindsey's version is superior to me.

I think LB can pretty much not destroy anything he covers to me. Like when he did Here Comes the Sun and most people hated it but I thought it was really interesting and brought it out in a different light. Of course, in that case, I still prefer the original...George.

Yep, because I love his version more than the original. Much more.

And I am a HUGE, HUGE Dylan fan. Sorry.

Interesting. I loved comparing Cory Sipper's lyrics to Lindsey's when someone posted them, but I never thought to compare Lindsey's and Donovan's. Obviously "gypsy boy" is "gypsy girl," but there are other changes that I never thought about before.

We made our beds together is Lindsey's.

He eshewed Donovan's "I stand here singing to the flowers," for which I applaud him. Instead he said, "can you give us a sign where to go."

Season of the Witch is one of my favorite Donovan songs.

Yes, and I even find some of his more recent endeavors more interesting than some of his older classics. That's right, get the flamethrower out.

No actually I'd tend to agree with that....

While I love the early stuff from the '60s I do actually like a variety of his music through all his years. Can you possibly get better songs than Changing of the Guards, Man in the Long Black Coat, Ain't Talkin' etc.

I'm sure we are both sitting on the edge of our seats waiting for the new album...

Nice to meet another Dylan fan anyway...even though we are way off topic!

Ahhh, shades of Stevie's "Gypsy" story...
