I think the ending of GDW is missing something, but I also agree that it still packs a lot. Plus, there's a part where Stevie turns and locks eyes with John that I really like. Also, the interaction between Lindsey and Stevie was becoming more spirited on that song, almost reminding me of The Dance when he would pound the stage with his foot, for the "did she make you cry, make you break down" part. He wasn't pounding the stage yet the last time I saw him, but he was getting there! I don't like medleys because just as you are getting into a song, it's over. So, I would have been really upset if they'd done that with CM's material. But I agree with you that it's the SYLM chorus that is amazing and it transports you. Takes me back to the seventies. I get chills when they say, "and there's not another living soul around". I cry thinking about it. Michele |

Okay, first of all, apologizes for not meeting up with anyone. I have not had time to coordinate and went right to the Rochester show after work.
It was an AMAZING SHOW. As many have already noted, it was a Lindsey showpiece. He had so much energy and balls. It may have included the best performances of So Afraid and Oh Well I've heard from him to date. Stevie was occasionally beguiling but mostly she seemed sapped of energy and a bit uncertain of herself on the stage. I know I might get boos for saying this but she has become somewhat of a campy version of an already campy act. She did, however, rise to the occasion on Storms and Stand Back. Here's my breakdown: Monday Morning and Second Hand News were very convincing performances. Go Insane was so good it made me lament the fact that Mac never originally recorded it. Never Going Back Again and Landslide were paired nicely back to back and were both strong performances. I Know I'm not Wrong was energetic and fun--though I didn't like the "do-do-do-do-dos." Oh Well and So Afraid were the highspots played with so much muscle I was beginning to dream of the Mac as a trio... Stevie had some fine moments, though they were intermittent. During Storms she was at her best. Gold Dust Woman was also pretty strong (though I could have done without the dramatic dropping of her shawl from her shoulders). Stand Back was hot. Elsewhere, Stevie seemed uncertain, maybe tired, and certainly less adventurous in terms of stage presence than I remembered. Gypsy, Sara and Dreams were pretty blah. Rhiannon seemed rushed. Silver Springs should have perhaps been played during the show instead as the encore since it seemed anti-climactic. Interestingly enough, one of the big high spots was Lindsey and Stevie's trade off reading of Say You Love Me, which had everyone standing up and dancing. It was genuinely charming. Don't Stop worked instrumentally, but Stevie's one verse on it was awful--not the kind of song she is meant to sing, and certainly not belt. No mention of Chris...bad! I loved te show overall and was so impressed with the instrumental trio. Last edited by aleuzzi; 03-17-2009 at 01:47 PM.. |

...But in general, there's something strange about the overall reviews from fans. Almost everybody mentions the greatness of lindsey and the less energetic, sometimes even flat performance by Stevie. Still they all conclude that they experienced a great or fantastic show. ![]() Does this mean that the guys are so mesmerizingly good that it overshadows the weakness of the female ex-star? OR is she better than everyone states and is she just slightly under expectationlevel but still very good?

I think the people detracting are just worn out by Stevie's hit songs to be honest. They all love the lesser played Storms and Silver Springs, and don't get me wrong, those are probably more emotional and unique performances, but the hits are still sung well and it isn't flat. The dynamics of Lindsey's guitar work in the songs which never seems to be the same twice really keeps things lively too. In many songs, they had both Lindsey and Stevie sing verses/chorus lines, which kept it interesting. I think people are just SO blown away by the amazing performance of Buckingham and his sheer excitement, crowd involvement, and energy that it perhaps overshadows a bit. The crowd gets so pumped up that Stevie's songs kind of mellow it back down a bit. I personally LOVED the dynamic that that created. By the way, Tusk was probably my favorite song of the night. I don't even like the studio version that much. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tjIrK3gl36o |

There's nothing wrong with Stevie at all. There's no weakness that I can see. She's very good. I doubt that any audience member who had never seen her before and had no expectations would come away with less than praise for her. As far as her performance goes, I like her music. As you said, that's still there. That's what drew me into FM and the music thrives. The stuff she does that appeals to her fans: the twirls, hats, boots, tamborine and flowing garb just has always seemed silly to me. It was always gimmicky. I just think critics are much less tolerant of it after 3 decades than they used to be and Stevie is less proficient at it. Yet, the fact that it no longer works doesn't really phase me, because I never thought it worked in the first place. I mean, I enjoyed it at her solo concerts, but in FM when the five of them were together and she was up there preening, she seemed so insubstantial and flighty in contrast to the other 4. I took her less seriously then than I do now. So, she can't pull off the physical theatrics anymore, but I never thought they were engaging. I think I am sometimes more impressed when she does a song "straight" now and she can bring the heat and drama to it, with just her voice. I think you get to the core of the matter that way. I mean, in her solo shows, I love HSML, but it's not what she does with the scarf at the end, it's the "me that's talking to you" that echoes in my head after the show. And I guess now that she's lost so much physical stamina, I can concentrate on that more. Of course, yes, I miss her energy. I mean people talk about the Charleston, but what amazed me on Angel was when she was not dancing. When she was just singing at the mic with Lindsey, she was jumping up and down and -- so effortlessly. I don't think she even bent her knees. She just propelled herself up and down at will. It was like she was on a spring. She was just that fired up. Well, that's gone forever and I miss that, but I find absolutely nothing deficient in her performance today and there's certainly not a lull when they're doing one of her songs, as opposed to when they're performing one of Lindsey's. Her music . . . when you hear the first opening chords of Sara and the mood they invoke. There's nothing unexciting about that. Michele |
