Default Celebrity obsession

I thought I'd start this thread because I thought it would be an interesting discussion. I work at a grocery store as a cashier and I have to look at all the tabloids everyday "discussing" the daily exploits of Britney(who, once she semi got her life back together, they threw into the trash bin) Brangelina, Tomkat, and their children and more others than I care to remember. Maybe it's a mid-western thing for me, I dunno, but I just dont give a **** about these people's lives. Not to sound crude, but my own life is more than good enough for me, not that it's perfect by any means. I was too young back in the 70's to really understand all the tabloid stuff that was going on around Fleetwood Mac, and that's probably a good thing since all I really cared about was the music, and that still holds true today. Some of the other things that I've been lucky enough to experience relating to Fleetwood Mac have been, in my opinion, a result of my attitude that these things are a bonus, not the main event. Just my 2 cents I guess. I've been out to L.A several times to see Stevie, Lindsey and Fleetwood Mac and I've always ben amazed at some of the things Ive seen out there. I.E people selling Celebrity maps telling exactly where these peoples homes are. Never paid any attention to that stuff at all.

I'll admit that I am somewhat fascinated by certain celebrities. Not really so much with the particular person, but with the whole celebrity business. how it must feel to live life like that, etc.

I dont hink theres neccesarily a terrible thing. I guess as long as whoever it is that's interested in this sort of thing knows where to draw the line, its no big deal to me. And I'm sure youre one of those people dear.

I'm in the minority, I dont give one ounce about ANY celebrity.

I dont care who they marry, how much they use a newborn baby for P.R., who they cheat upon/with, who or WHAT they sleep with, how much they are paid, I just dont care at ALL.

They whine and cry when they have their lives exposed for all to see, but without that exposure they are afraid that they will blow away in the wind like dust particles...Disgusting.

Most sickening is having to hear CONSTANTLY of their political views, like I am going to vote for Joe Schmoo just because "such and such celebrity" has given this person their approval - last time I looked I was a two degree college grad with HIS OWN MIND and who can develop his OWN OPINIONS without some publicity seeking cesspool dwelling media seeking EGOMANIAC trying to TELL ME who and why I should vote someone in particular...If you want my opinion on celebs and their political opinions, do your self a favor and go watch the movie "Team America"

The word "celebrity" comes from the word "celebrate" - And I'll be DAMNED if I will "celebrate" ANY of these walking pieces of ****.

I wouldn't mind it so much if the celebrity had a background in something besides acting, music, etc. Unfortunately, few of them do. I mean, if a Russian celebrity said "vote for so and so, because the other guy sounds like the guys back in Soviet Russia" all fine and well and we could learn from his experience. Or, if a celebrity has advanced studies in economics or something, then what they say is grounded in something. Maybe a celebrity ran a business, etc. Someone like Baldwin, Whoopi Goldberg or Clooney who haven't done anything else and really have no other experience to offer should shut up. Or people like Oprah, who are talk show hosts, should stop fancying themselves "spiritual advisors" or role models. They are talk show hosts and there is nothing wrong with just being one. After watching that whole "American Prayer" thing, I don't know how anyone can take these people seriously anymore.

I find it ironic that there is a post criticizing people obsessed with celebrity, on a celebrity message board. I mean, come on, aren't we all a little obsessed?

Just wanted to add that I couldn't care less who a celeb supports politically. I'm just kind of fascinated with whom they are dating, what they are wearing, etc. Celebrity websites are my (not so) secret vice.

I'm more in the "what they're wearing" camp. I might not know who the person is, but dammit I will spend 30 minutes of my precious, short-dished time to look at what they have on. I am a fashionista. Anyone who knows me knows my obsession with clothes, and not merely because it's "in." I pretty much pick and choose what I love from various time periods, designers, cultures, etc. I love to dress up and I love to look good.

But other than that, much of the "gossip" is pointless dribble. I think Angelina Jolie is a lovely woman, but I don't care how many kids she has or what country she's having them in, and it always fascinates me that the ones who claim their "private" and aren't interested in the spotlight sure hook up with a lot of photographers anytime they are doing some charitable deed worth mentioning (note: like above mentioned celeb).

I am NOT obsessed, Just dont care at ALL.

As for this being a celebrity message board, I dont care anything the personal lives of the members of Fleetwood Mac (ie - Dont give a **** about hearing about Lindsey & Stevie's lives) - not of interest to me. Just play music is all I ask...I was being honest with the question asked, nothing more/nothing less...If someone likes "celebrities" doesnt make them wrong in my eyes, and hopefully my disdain is accepted equally.

I don't see anything wrong with it either. I think you are more of the exception than the rule. I guess maybe the choice of the word "obsession" is what I find funny. I think it's subjective. I've been called "obsessed" with Stevie and Fleetwood Mac by friends and family because I've been a fan for a long time, and I try to go see them at least once per tour. On the other hand, I do not follow them from state to state, and get upset if I don't get seats within the first 3 rows because I won't be able to get to the stage for the "edge" walk. Like you, I don't think there is anything wrong with it, whatever makes you happy. Someone who reads the tabloids because they are fascinated by Brad and Angelina's baby, or Britney Spears' weight loss might seem celebrity obsessed, but then again, they might think the same of someone who dresses up like Stevie and goes to every one of her shows on the east coast. It's like Violet Beauregarde telling Willy Wonka spitting is a dirty habit, while her finger is shoved up her nose.

It's not that I am obsessed-and I do not have "deep lyrics to express my feelings today"- I'm like Stevie, "I don't want to be a waitress I want to be a star"It's Today it's simple:
I want to be a ROCKSTAR

Just like Nickelback chants:
Im through with standing in line
to clubs well never get in
Its like the bottom of the ninth
and Im never gonna win
This life hasnt turned out
quite the way I want it to be

I want a brand new house
on an episode of Cribs
And a bathroom I can play baseball in
And a king size tub big enough
for ten plus me

Ill need a credit card thats got no limit
And a big black jet with a bedroom in it
Gonna join the mile high club
At thirty-seven thousand feet

I want a new tour bus full of old guitars
My own star on Hollywood Boulevard
Somewhere between Cher and
James Dean is fine for me

Im gonna trade this life for fortune and fame
Id even cut my hair and change my name

Cause we all just wanna be big rockstars
And live in hilltop houses driving fifteen cars
The girls come easy and the drugs come cheap
Well all stay skinny cause we just wont eat
And well hang out in the coolest bars
In the VIP with the movie stars
> Every good gold diggers
Gonna wind up there
Every Playboy bunny
With her bleach blond hair

Hey hey I wanna be a rockstar
Hey hey I wanna be a rockstar

I wanna be great like Elvis without the tassels
Hire eight body guards that love to beat up assholes
Sign a couple autographs
So I can eat my meals for free
think Im gonna dress my ass
with the latest fashion
Get a front door key to the Playboy mansion
Gonna date a centerfold that loves to
blow my money for me

Im gonna trade this life
For fortune and fame
Id even cut my hair
And change my name

Cause we all just
wanna be big rockstars
And live in hilltop houses
driving fifteen cars
The girls come easy and
the drugs come cheap
Well all stay skinny
cause we just wont eat
And well hang out in the coolest bars
In the VIP with the movie stars
Every good gold diggers
gonna wind up there
Every Playboy bunny
with her bleach blond hair
And well hide out in the private rooms
With the latest dictionary and
todays whos who
Theyll get you anything
with that evil smile
Everybodys got a
drug dealer on speed dial

Hey hey I wanna be a rockstar
Hey hey I wanna be a rockstar

Im gonna sing those songs
that offend the censors
Gonna pop my pills
from a pez dispenser
When they ask why I drink all day
Ill say because I can

Im gonna trade this life for fortune and fame
Id even cut my hair and change my name

Cause we all just wanna be big rockstars
And live in hillltop houses driving fifteen cars
The girls come easy and the drugs come cheap
Well all stay skinny cause we just wont eat
And well hang out in the coolest bars
In the VIP with the movie stars
Every good gold diggers gonna wind up there
Every playboy bunny with her bleach blond hair
And well hide out in the private rooms
With the latest dictionary and todays whos who
Theyll get you anything with that evil smile
Everybodys got a drug dealer on speed dial

Hey hey I wanna be a rockstar
Hey hey I wanna be a rockstar

But-that is today- Tomorrow I may want to be an obsure writer, thinking deep thoughts....and sharing them with the world...
Who knows?

I've sort of been obsessed with Beethoven, Erasmus, Edmund Wilson, & Stevie Nicks. I feel that it's shameful.

Here's my 2 cents, take it or leave it.

A person does not give up their citizenship or their right to free expression just because they become famous.
If I had a talk show on tv, or I was walking down the red carpet and was asked who I was supporting, I wouldn't hesitate. As it is, I talk to friends and co workers about my politics, to try and change minds.
Millions and millions of voters do not have a degree, nor do they research the candidates. Is that encouraging? No. But they may have a single issue that drives them to the polls. Celebrities have the same right to vote on the issue(s) that are most important to them, and they have the right to avail themselves of any opprtunity to speak their mind on such issues.

That being said, I have never voted a certain way just because of a celebrity.

C'mon, Randy -- tell me with a straight face that if Patti Lupone advocated voting for McCain, you wouldn't seriously consider it.
