Rolling Stone magazine has been an eyewitness to American culture for over 40 years, working with the finest writers and photographers, covering the most interesting people and events in one of the most exciting eras in pop culture history. From the November 9, 1967 first newsprint issue’s compelling front page image of John Lennon nearly unrecognizable in his movie role in “How I Won the War” to today’s iconic color glossy, the magazine has always been on the cutting edge - and more than just a bi-weekly publication - and ROLLING STONE MAGAZINE: Voice of Our Generation, hosted by Paul Shaffer captures the spirit of founder Jann Wenner’s vision to celebrate the music, the culture, and the creativity that defined the world of the Baby Boomer.


“Rolling Stone Magazine has been entertaining, informing, and inspiring me for 40 years, and so has public television,” said Shaffer. “I’m proud to be the host of a program that combines these two eminent forces in American culture!” ROLLING STONE MAGAZINE: Voice of Our Generation features interviews with Rolling Stone founder, editor-in-chief and publisher Jann Wenner, executive editor Joe Levy, and other Rolling Stone contributors and admirers, as well as clips of musical performances, comedy skits and films from the last four decades that represent the scope of the magazine’s impact. Major artists in all areas of pop culture have been written about in the magazine, many of them as discoveries in the earliest days of their career, from Bruce Springsteen to Fleetwood Mac; from Elton John to Paul Simon. The program brings these pages to life with footage of early Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young; the best of the ‘piano man’ Billy Joel; the sweet sound of a young James Taylor and more.

Host Paul Shaffer, himself an iconic figure on the forefront of pop culture as musical director of “Late Show with David Letterman” for more than 25 years, brings it all together with behind-the-scenes anecdotes and touchstones from the era. An avid reader of the magazine who recalls in the program purchasing the first issue as a high school student, Shaffer was also covered in the magazine while a musician and cast member in the golden age of “Saturday Night Live” and has served as musical producer for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremonies, working closely with Hall of Fame co-founder Jann Wenner.
