'Cuz he IS a badass. It's a compliment. I like what Johnny Depp said.

I'm not gonna pre-order, seems whenever I do that, I get things after the release date. Sometimes Best Buy will have a product on the shelves the day before the official release date, so I'm hoping for that. If not, then I'll be there on my lunch hour Oct. 16.

TOM PETTY AND THE HEARTBREAKERS Film "Runnin' Down A Dream" to Be Screened in Heartbreaker Hometown, Gainesville, Florida, for Two Nights Only, October 15th and 16th

LOS ANGELES, CA -- (MARKET WIRE) -- 10/01/07 -- On April Fool's Day 1974, Tom Petty hopped into a van with his bandmates, including future Heartbreakers Mike Campbell and Benmont Tench, to pursue dreams of rock and roll stardom. Ten Miles outside of town the van broke down. And the world paid no mind. But the cameras were already running. That moment in Heartbreaker history and many others were caught on film well before Tom Petty was a household name. Still an unknown outside of his home region, Petty was fronting the band Mudcrutch, which would only gradually evolve into the Heartbreakers. The music itself was the only sure sign of what was to come. These remarkable early years, and all that would follow, are at the center of a new documentary by legendary director Peter Bogdanovich ("The Last Picture Show"). An unprecedented look inside the story of America's truest rock and roll band, the documentary will be screened in Gainesville for two nights only, Monday and Tuesday the 15th and 16th October at the Regal Gainesville Cinema 14 at 7pm. Tickets will be available on Thursday, October 4th at Fandango.com.

"Runnin' Down A Dream" has been selected to close the 2007 New York Film Festival at the legendary Walter Reade Theater on October 14. The film includes performances from the 30th anniversary concert at the O'Connell Center on September 22nd, 2006, rare television footage, never before seen interviews from the archive, clips from Bogdanovich's discussions with such Heartbreaker friends and family including Eddie Vedder, Stevie Nicks, Rick Rubin, Jeff Lynne, and many more musicians, friends and collaborators who came into the band's orbit over the years.

"Runnin' Down A Dream" focuses not only on the Heartbreakers' inspiring ride to the top but the story of what they did when they got there, as artists, as a band and as people. Bogdanovich's film explores many of the underlying reasons for the band's unmatched capacity not only to endure but to thrive. Gritty, exuberant, infectious: "Runnin' Down A Dream" tells the Heartbreakers' story as never before, revealing the combination of unwavering talent, artistic vision, and sheer persistence that has made their thirty-plus-year run possible.

In addition to tracking the Heartbreakers over their decades together, "Runnin' Down A Dream" also follows Tom Petty's solo adventures and his time as a Traveling Wilbury alongside George Harrison, Bob Dylan, Jeff Lynne and Roy Orbison. A celebration of what can happen when artists are given the chance to explore the depths of their own talent, "Runnin' Down A Dream" is the story of an artistic victory unlike any other.

ABOUT TOM PETTY AND THE HEARTBREAKERS

TOM PETTY AND THE HEARTBREAKERS released their debut album in 1976. Since that time they have sold more than 50 million records and remain one of the biggest touring acts in the business. Despite the scale of their success and the creative range of their work, the Heartbreakers maintain a reputation as a rock-and-roll band, always true to the music's original inspiration. Between the Heartbreakers' recordings and his solo work, Tom Petty has received 18 Grammy nominations. Honored with lifetime achievement awards including Billboard's Century Award, MTV's Video Vanguard Award, and induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Tom Petty, with the Heartbreakers at his side, has achieved the status of legend among his fellow musicians and listeners worldwide.

ABOUT PETER BOGDANOVICH

Peter Bogdanovich has earned a reputation as one of American cinema's great filmmakers. In addition to his work as a director, Bogdanovich has received acclaim as an author, a critic, a screenwriter, a documentarian, an actor, and a historian. His films, including "The Last Picture Show," "Paper Moon," and "Mask," have been Oscar-winning landmarks. "The Last Picture Show" is a National Treasure as declared by the Library of Congress. Viewers know him for his recurring role and directing work on "The Sopranos." Film historians and movie buffs alike know him for his monographs on Orson Welles, Alfred Hitchcock, and John Ford. On the heels of "Runnin' Down A Dream," Bogdanovich will return to feature film directing with a new film entitled "Star-Crossed," based on a true Hollywood love story. He's also planning a return to the theater to do a Broadway production of Tennessee Williams's last play, "In Masks Outrageous and Austere," which is being co-presented by Gore Vidal.

This is going to be a big hit movie. I'm sure of it.

It will be the Rattle & Hum of the New Age. Although he isn't by any stretch one of my favorite moviemakers, Bogdanovich is poised for a major comeback.

Earlier this AM we mentioned the Killers covering Joy Division for the Control soundtrack. While we're talking films, how about Runnin' Down A Dream: Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, Peter Bogdanovich's Petty documentary? It's a four-hour film (epic) that includes rare footage, interviews, concert action, etc. Talking heads will included Dave Grohl, fellow Wilbury George Harrison, Jackson Browne, Johnny Depp, Eddie Vedder, and, of course, Rick Rubin, the Heartbreakers themselves. A sort of Petty-inspired sausage party! Oh, wait, Stevie Nicks is in there, too ... She only sounds like a man. Just kidding.

Runnin' Down A Dream premieres 10/14 at the New York Film Festival and then runs commercial free 10/29 on the Sundance Channel (with later rebroadcasts), but if you like the thing enough to take home, a 3 DVD/1 CD set's available on Warner Brothers 10/16, exclusively at Best Buy ... tres Eagles. Oh, wait, that was Wal-Mart and Sam's. We had Don Henley confused with Billy Corgan. Anyhow, the Best Buy-exclusive package includes the four-hour Director's cut, the 30th Anniversary Concert in the band's Gainesville hometown, and a CD of recordings/rarities from the film (some previously unreleased). Not quite enough? A related coffee table book will available 11/1 on Chronicle Books.

Marketing blitz aside, dude's definitely had jams ... We kinda think of their songs in terms of the characters Petty created: Still love the tripped Alice cake, the bummed L.A. "Free Fallin'" chick, and plenty of their other American girls. Do you have a favorite?

Runnin' Down a Dream: Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers

(Documentary) Directed by Peter Bogdanovich.

With: Tom Petty, Mike Campbell, Benmont Tench, George Harrison, Bob Dylan, Stevie Nicks, Johnny Depp, Jackson Browne, Eddie Vedder, Roger McGuinn, Jeff Lynne, Dave Stewart.

By RONNIE SCHEIBFree-falling through 30 years of continuous musical reinvention and 145 songs, Peter Bogdanovich's four-hour docu on Tom Petty goes down as smoothly as well-aged whiskey. Rather than fashioning a standard-issue, VH1-type rise-and-fall-and-rise-again biodoc, Bogdanovich includes little material that does not relate, directly or indirectly, to the evolution of the music. Result is a feast for Petty fans and a joyous confirmation of the vitality of the collective creative process. Following its New York Film Festival debut, the pic opens Oct. 15 as a one-night-only theatrical event in 27 U.S. cities, followed by a DVD rollout and Oct. 29 Sundance Channel airing.
Petty's personal archives supplied an extraordinary wealth of footage, allowing the pic to visually trace Petty's beginnings -- from age 11, when he met Elvis onset in Gainesville for "Follow That Dream," to his formation of a popular high school band, the Sundowners. This gave birth to the Epics, whose "corny" name was changed to the enigmatic Mudcrutch. Petty's adoration of cowboys and cowboy movies even allows Bogdanovich to slip in a clip from "Rio Bravo," wherein Ricky Nelson and Dean Martin croon "Get Along Home Cindy."

Homemovies (shot on 8mm) of band members fooling around in Gainesville are scored to newly remixed cuts of unreleased Mudcrutch numbers. Copious scenes of the jubilant Heartbreakers on their first European trip (their 1976 debut album, overlooked at home, enjoyed huge popularity in England) include an appearance on the BBC rock show "Old Grey Whistle Test," where they perform "Fooled Again."

The Heartbreakers' early formation and its members' individual contributions are recounted by those who stayed, those who joined and those who left. The convoluted politics that took over once the band left Gainesville makes for improbably fascinating watching, due largely to savvy editing.

Editing scheme somewhat glosses over Petty's momentary, label-dictated abandonment of the band, playing up his later heroic stand against the industry (Petty successfully fought to regain control of his music and subsequently prevented the record company from using his popularity to raise the retail price of LPs). Bogdanovich's tendency toward hero worship, and the fact that the docu was commissioned by Petty, may have something to do with the choice. But since Petty's desertion was momentary and his ultimate struggle impacted the music biz for years, Bogdanovich's interpretation is finally history's.

Pic does full justice to Petty's collaborations with established artists he admired, showing him and the Heartbreakers touring for two years as Bob Dylan's band; his participation in the Traveling Wilburys along with Dylan, George Harrison and Roy Orbison; and his work with Johnny Cash. The video of his 1981 duet with Stevie Nicks, of "Stop Draggin' My Heart Around," is preceded by talks with Nicks in which she describes trying to leave Fleetwood Mac to join the Heartbreakers, only to be told, "But you're a woman!"

Interviews with the likes of Jackson Browne, Johnny Depp (who appeared in the video for "Into the Great Wide Open"), George Harrison (shortly before his death), Eddie Vedder, Roger McGuinn, Jeff Lynne and Dave Stewart are cannily interspersed throughout, along with selected snippets with Petty himself, whose wry commentary proves highly entertaining.

In Petty, Bogdanovich found the musical equivalent of a classical metteur-en-scene, a literal auteur -- widely acknowledged as a great songwriter, whose orchestration of his songs is dependent on the input of others yet reflective of his own vision.

Pic feels half its length, dragging a bit only in the final quarter-hour, when Bogdanovich finds it necessary to again sum up Petty's importance.

Tech credits, particularly sound, are uniformly excellent.

Camera (color, HD 24p, 8mm), Jim Chader, Don Smith; editor, Danica Barnes, Sean Stack; sound, Elliott Cowand, Shaun Cunningham, Brian Riordan. Reviewed at New York Film Festival, Oct. 11, 2007. Running time: 238 MIN.

i hope you plan on watching it in increments or moving from the treadmill onto the couch because that **** is four hours long

i stayed for a little over an hour last night (there was to be an intermission at the end of two hours) and from what i saw, i thought it was pretty hilarious and really cool -- not only the video of mudcrutch and live performances from the past year but the really candid interviews and the fact that most of petty's life was documented by he and his friends as they were embarking the journey to become a band. i'll probably either buy or rent it to watch the rest
