Angry Dixie Chicks...

Yesterday I was listening to the radio and heard the Dixie Chicks singing Landslide on the country radio station. So i stopped to listen of course. After the song the people were saying how Stevie wrote the song and it was on the Fleetwood Mac album and i was thinking "oh it's cool because they usually don't mention Stevie or Fleetwood Mac." And then the lady says "well i think the Dixie Chicks do this song just a little bit better..." and the guy said "i agree with you on that one!" It just totally p*ssed me off and i felt like sharing that. Why would they even say anything about Stevie or FM if in the end they were just going to put down their version?

I think you're over reacting. I don't see where prefere a certain version over another is "putting down" the other version. Just a matter of personal taste. Similar thing with "Songbird"...I LOVE the original by Christine, but I DO prefer Eva Cassidy's version over Chris'...does that mean I'm "putting down" Christine's version? No, I just like Eva's better. Simple as that.

It's just the tone of voice that they said it in...it's fine if they prefer the Dixie Chicks version. i like the way they sing it too but i think the way they said it was kind of rude in a way....i guess you had to hear it though...

Yeah, I guess their actual voice inflections would make a difference. Maybe I over reacted.

I don't know how the rest of you feel about this, but frankly I'm getting a little annoyed with how frequently you hear the Dixie Chicks version played on the radio. I mean, it seens as if it is constanly playing. For example, the other day I was putting this bookshelf thing together from IKEA (it took me practically all day) and I was listening to the radio (95.5 WPLJ here in NYC) and they played it AT LEAST once an hour...no exageration. It's also on the pop stations the lite fm stations and God knows what else... It's really starting to annoy the hell out of me. I don't konw if it's like this all over the country, but it's rediculous around here. And what's even worse is that you used to be able to hear FM's version on the radio quite frequently... at least a few times a week. Now I NEVER hear it. We can only hope that FM gets half as much radio airtime with their new releases as the Dixie Chicks are getting with Landslide.

Well, to be honest, I'm feeling a little resentful myself about the Chicks version getting all this attention. It's like I want to say, "Hey, you people, this song has been around for coming up on thirty years, and it had ALWAYS been good. What's so different now?"

I guess we can all console ourselves with the fact that there's a big cash register somewhere with a direct line to Stevie's velvet-lined pocket going "cha-ching, cha-ching, cha-ching" every time that sucker takes a turn on the old spinner! You go, Stevie!

Maybe now you all can relate to how I felt back in 1969/70 when Santana's version of "Black Magic Woman" was getting all the airplay and it was NEVER mentioned that it was a cover of a Fleetwood Mac song. Even to this day, I can safely estimate that 98% of the people you'd ask would say that "Black Magic Woman" was written by Carlos Santana (and adamantly so...to the point of near fisticuffs if you'd tell 'em it wasn't) I DO think it is cool that Carlos, in just about every interview I've read of him the past 5 or 6 years, has mentioned Peter Green at least once; ant THREE times in his interview in the current issue of Guitar Player.

At least, DJ's now, for the most part, make a very obvious point to MENTION that the Dixie Chicks are doing a cover of a Fleetwood Mac song.

I work at a country station and yes it is played a lot, as are all other current billboard songs..especially those in the top ten...which the Chicks are..so it's nothing weird...except we have a bigger connection to the song...being Stevie fans..on our station though, we run American Country Countdown every Sunday and for the first few weeks Landslide aired the host had really good things to say about Stevie, and one week the Chicks even talked about Stevie..so I think it's good to expose her writing to a different form of music listeners...like country fans...

Chili, I just had to laugh at your post....
Please don't take it the wrong way, but I was just over in the Lindsey forum, and people are talking about the Santana thread I started about, oh, a hundred years ago, it seems, and I was joking about having spawned a monster and how it is seeping into other threads....haha,

Then I click over here to see what your response to this was, and all I could think was, "That damn Santana thread just won't die! It's spilling over to the Stevie board!" LOL!!

Sorry, it was funny to me, anyway. hee hee

Thumbs up I have to agree with...

chiliD, most people assume Mr.Santana wrote "Black Magic Woman"...Kinda sad that people dont even know its a Peter Green era Fleetwood Mac song...I betcha the same people think "Green Manalishi" was written by Judas Priest too but not by Fleetwood Mac...lol...Brian J.

I just love whenever I tell people Black Magic Woman is a Fleetwood Mac song and they start to argue with me. I could win SO much money if I actually would bet on it. As for Landslide, The Dance version was also all over the radio, even YEARS after it came out, and it's probably the FM song I hear most on the radio. It just has that specialness to it. Why would you be mad that a Stevie Nicks written song is STILL getting tons of attention after all these years, even though it's by a different artist? Personally, I've always thought Stevie should give some of her songs to other artists to sing...she's obviously got a big enough selection. But these days it's never about the songwriter...it's just about who does the song, which kind of sucks. But, that's the world today.

i understand all of your points but i think some of you are being a bit too serious about it. i've followed FM for 20 years now and i remember the days when there was hardly any recognition at all. It's like, their big 5 year period (1975-80) was over and people were into newer artists. Now, or since 1997 there's been a renewed interest in them.

I'm glad people are covering their songs. I know you would rather hear the FM versions but as someone said in an earlier post that the FM songs have been around for 30 years. If 30 years ago the radio stations were constantly playing songs and artists from 30 years before that, FM would never be where they are today. In the long run, and in most cases, people will remember the original versions.

I love hearing people cover Fleetwood Mac songs (well, except Elton John & Duncan Shiek)!!! I have a pretty extensive collection of Fleetwood Mac (and solo) cover versions.

Some of my faves:

Eva Cassidy's "Songbird"
Leo Kottke's "World Turning"
Rod Stewart's "Stand Back"
Pointer Sisters' "Hypnotized"
Kick Axxe's "The Chain"
Firefall's "Crying In The Night"
Rusty Weir's "Lola (My Love)", "Don't Let Me Down Again", & "Think About It" (all on the same album, released in 1976!!!)
Chaka Khan's "Everywhere"
The Cranberries' "Go Your Own Way"
Paula Stanley's "Rhiannon"
Waylon Jennings/Willie Nelson's "Gold Dust Woman"
The Melvins' "Green Manalishi"
Midge Ure's "Man Of The World"

What I was saying earlier in this thread was that NOW, just about everytime the Dixie Chicks version of "Landslide" gets played, the DJs mention Fleetwood Mac...there should be no DOUBT in ANYONE's mind that they're covering a Mac tune...back in 1969, there was no mention of "Black Magic Woman" being a Fleetwood Mac cover (and, as Brian mentioned, Judas Priest's cover of "Green Manalishi" never had a mention of it being a Fleetwood Mac song, either) so there's where the mistaken perceptions had their beginning.

I think Fleetwood Mac missed the boat by NOT dipping a toe into the "country market" YEARS ago (even BEFORE 1975)...Stevie obviously has "country" roots. Of course, Bekka Bramlett & Billy Burnette do, too. If they'd have taken advantage of Bekka & Billy's country connections, they could've marketed "Time" to a country audience and probably the album would've done pretty well! When "Time" came out, there was a cover version of Dave Mason's "We Just Disagree" topping the country charts (I forget who did the cover, though)

Songs that Fleetwood Mac (or solo) could've marketed their own versions to country music radio stations:

Spare Me A Little Of Your Love
She's Changing Me
Warm Ways
Landslide (of course)
Monday Morning
I Don't Want To Know
Never Going Back Again
Leather & Lace (Stevie)
That's Alright
When The Sun Goes Down
Do You Know?
Sweet Girl
Silver Springs
Talking To My Heart
Nothing Without You

Holy Cow! I've only heard "Crying in the Night" by Firefall and "Rhiannon" by Waylon Jennings. Oh also, the Tribute album....where the heck can you get all the others? i'd particularly love to hear the Rusty Weir stuff. who is that anyway?

Rusty Weir is kind of like a mix of Waylon Jennings, Merle Haggard & Hank Williams, Jr....only a bit younger...and obviously HIPPER!!

I acquired most of the covers I have back when Napster was in full bloom.
