But as a human being? Addict or not, my respect for her has continually plummeted the more I know about her. She is an excuse factory of the highest order. When it comes to self indulgence, she is world class royalty.
I get what you're saying. But people are affected deeply by their environments too. Her very name means "one who wears a crown," or in other words, "Queen." There's a certain survival value in bringing your kid up to think they rule the world. Well, I'm kinda getting into "family dynamics" stuff now and I'm sure there's MUCH we don't know. But Stevie herself has frequently been very open about the fact that she was spoiled growing up - "a princess in my time." That's why, i.m.o., she's often talked about "going back to the gypsy that I was" - going back to that little closet. Maybe it didn't work, but at least she tried, within her abilities, which she's admitted are limited.

i am completely flummoxed by this. are you saying her parents gave her that name as a survival measure? actually, your whole post seems like a non sequitur. how is this a response to what sparky said?

I'm always amazed to hear what people think I was taking, because it wasn't painkillers. I was taking a thing called Klonopin-like a Valium thing. This was prescribed for me by a serious doctor. I started taking it in 1986. By 1989, it wasn't that I didn't write well, I just stopped writing. Just too blase to care. Any kind of a Valium thing, any kind of a Prozac thing, very bad for people who write-if you're not seriously depressed. If you need it, then that's one thing. But if you're just a person that wants to feel better and feel happier, those drugs don't do a lot for creative people.

Well, that's "a little better." I can tell you that whenever I've heard her talk about this, she hasn't said all that, she just trashed the Psychiatrist who prescribed the stuff and said that it's really bad for you. I definitely admit it's "human" to vary what she says from time to time and not think to say every little detail in every little interview. But my personal preference would be that she would always say something like "in my experience" or w/e.

What I'm trying to say is that in certain ways, she was very "spoiled" growing up. She's mentioned in interviews that she was practically brainwashed, in fact. For example, her Mom would NEVER NEVER let her play with the neighborhood children when she was very young. (She didn't want Stevie to get "corrupted" or something.) So she made her stay home and literally listen to fairy tales instead. They didn't tell her, i.m.o., that sometimes the "rainbows end." They just told her about the pot of gold at the end of it. In SOME ways, I think this "strategy" paid off for her BIG-time, I mean, look at her huge success - but there was a price, too. i.m.o. she's been very open in interviews about maybe being a little "spoiled" in the way she was brought up. But she may not be able to perceive, so easily, specific examples where that comes through, for example shouting at someone in a boat who had asked her to turn the music on her radio down, "Do you know who I AM!? I'm Stevie f'g NICKS!!!" or putting the blame on others for her problems with cocaine and other drugs.

P.S. - she mentioned in an interview once that one Christmas, when she was 2 or so, she was given so many presents that they literally filled the room from wall to wall - and this was a BIG room. She opened all of them, looked around, and said "is that ALL!???" Her Dad said "THAT'S it, you're getting a little brother." And so pretty soon, Chris came along. Their hope was that it would help Stevie to not be so "spoiled."

i think you're doing a staggering amount of interpolating here.

being a little spoiled doesn't automatically mean that at the age of 20, 30, 40, 50 you can't take responsibility for your actions. and if at the age of 50-whatever you're still explaining away your behavior on a spoiled childhood, that is sad.

doesn't this contradict your claim that stevie was spoiled and brainwashed throughout her childhood?

Well, you clearly think very logically and I won't argue against you. But read BETWEEN her lines a little bit. There's a consistent "pattern" of Stevie indicating in interviews that, no matter what the details are, she was very over-protected and "spoiled" as a child; and that her behavior and outlook on life, and her self-image, were deeply affected by that.
So I'm just sayin' that that could be a partial reason for why she has certain attitudes about whose fault her past behavior is, and whose it isn't.
I think it's VERY difficult for Stevie to see herself from the outside, in the way that others who "view her realistically" do.

Not necessarily, i.m.o., because they weren't necessarily successful at easing off of this.

I was 12, not quite 13 when I found out about the Mac/Stevie. Wanna talk?
