I thought Ronnie flapped her lips a bit tooo much, other than that she was great. Patti Smith, well, what can I say except I thought that was one of the best speeches and performances at this ceremony ever.

Ok, so who turned up the reverb on Stephen Stills' amp? (and who told him the wrong key?) And, whose idea was it for Keith to grow a moustache? Cool that he was playing George Harrison's old Hamburg-days guitar.
And, what's with Peter Buck, could he NOT hear his B string was not in tune for the entire song (on that "Man on the Moon" song...I'm not all that REM literate, never have cared for 'em...and this performance didn't sway my opinion in the least either).

Funny blog - mentions Stevie (and spoilers):
http://www.phillyburbs.com/pb-dyn/ne...7-1313482.html Rock and Roll Hall of Fame live blog recap By: PATRICK BERKERY (Tue, Mar/13/2007) 8:30, WELCOME: Live from the 'Is This Thing On?' compound, welcome to the first annual phillyBurbs' live blog of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction festivities. Expect no love whatsoever for Sammy Hagar or Velvet Revolver. I'm flanked by my cats - Penny, a dyed in the fur David Lee Roth fan, and Lucky, a Sammy Hagar fan from way back. She's wearing her 'I Can't drive 55' flea & tick collar just for the occasion… Been scrolling every channel and can't seem to find the red carpet pre-game show. If they have one for the Westminster Dog Show, they can have one for this. 8:36, JANN WENNER COMES OUT… ON STAGE!: So this is the first time they're televising this thing live. And the one guy getting inducted tonight who was born for live TV - David Lee Roth - ain't here. Does not bode well. At least Keith Richards is inducting the Ronettes. And there's an open bar… Nice that "Rolling Stone"/Rock Hall honcho Jann Wenner is giving props to the late Atlantic Records founder Ahmet Ertegun. A true record man in an industry now filled with bean counters looking for the next Nickelback or Christina Aguilera. Ahmet brought us Zeppelin, Buffalo Springfield, Otis Redding, Ray Charles and this Rock Hall place. I'm sure even he's looking down on this and saying `WHERE THE HELL IS DIAMOND DAVE?' 8:40, R.I.P.: Syd Barrett, Buck Owens, Frankie Lane, Nikki Sudden, Denny Doherty, James Brown, Freddy Fender, Vince Welnick, King Floyd, Michael Brecker, Arif Mardin, Grant McClennan, Sandy West, Brad Delp, Gene Pitney, Arthur Lee, Ahmet Ertegun…. we lost a lot of good ones this past year. 8:48, AHMET WAS THE ORIGINAL HIPSTER: Cool film about Ahmet Ertegun cultivating the careers of Ray Charles, CSN, Zeppelin, the Stones… he was TRULY hip. In a way today's record exec who totes around the $1,000 Blackberry, $2,000 Bluetooth, and four well-dressed assistants while chasing here today-gone today bubblegum singers can only dream of. 8:55, THE FIRST LADY OF SOUL, MISS ARETHA FRANKLIN: Another Ahmet protégé, Aretha Franklin. Can't think of but one current R&B singer - Mary J. Blige - who stands a chance of ever making the Hall, let alone still having a career in five years. Maybe Alicia Keys. Maybe. Don't think Christina Aguilera will be singing a tribute to any record executives in 20 years time. Might not even be record execs as we know them in 20 years. That's cause for a gala celebration. 8:58, THERE'S A MICROPHONE OPEN: Aretha's singing her heart out and some A/V dweeb is testing a live mike! I love the danger of a live awards show! Viva la Soy Bomb! 9:09, KEEF INDUCTS THE RONETTES: Newly mustachioed Keith Richards is currently inducting the Ronettes. His 'stache shaves off about 10 years. Now it looks like he's only 150. Then again, 150's the new 125, right? So expect a new Stones tour next year. 9:15, ON THE RONETTES: Very worthy induction, looooong overdue. Makes me pine for the days of female artists of substance: Ronettes, Supremes, Carole King, Tina Turner, and Janis Joplin. They didn't sing every note like they were singing the "Star Spangled Banner" at the Super Bowl, full-on "American Idol"-style. They were understated when they needed to be, they were elegant. They were seriously talented. Can't think of many female artists working today that fit that bill… Don't even mention Snorah Jones… or Cat Power… or Lily Allen… or Alicia Keys. Whatever happened to Alannah "Black Velvet" Myles? 9:22, THE FIRST OF MANY AWKWARD TECHNICAL PAUSES: Yeah, this thing will be wrapped by 12:30. 12:30 pm tomorrow! 9:31, PAUL SHAFFER & THE CBS ORCHESTRA, ETC. ARE PRETTY MUCH NAILING THE WALL OF SOUND, SOUND: Not easy approximating that Phil Spector Wall of Sound live, but Schaffer and company are doing a damn good job backing the Ronettes, methinks. Good thing they hired five tambourine players. And not one of them is Davy Jones or Stevie Nicks. "Baby I Love You," "Be My Baby." Ronnie Spector's voice sounds a little croaky, though. Fun fact: CBS orchestra drummer Anton Fig was the drummer on KISS "Unmasked' and Ace Frehley's "Frehley's Comet" album. And, yes, I did grow up in Jersey. 9:35, NOTHING SUCKS THE GOOD VIBES OUT OF THE ROOM… : Like a letter from alleged murderer/legendary record producer/Ronnie Spector's ex-hubby Phil Spector. Good times! 9:56, PATTI SMITH?? REALLY??: Yeah, punk poetess Patti Smith is getting in this year. Despite some great songs - "Kimberly," "Dancing Barefoot," "People Have the Power," "Because the Night" - I think she's pretty damn overrated. And that voice can be painful live. She's always been a little too Lower East Side boho-artsy for me. However, she represents a very important time in rock and punk. And, in a sense, I suppose her induction also validates the work of Television, The Heartbreakers, the MC5, the Stooges, all great acts who really don't carry Smith's cache. And, ultimately, I think that's what's getting her in. Fun fact: Patti Smith and I (and Welcome Back Kotter's Robert Hegyes) went to the same college. Not at the same time, silly. 10:08, IF I WAS INDUCTED INTO THE ROCK AND ROLL HALL OF FAME: When I performed, I would open with my own material. Not a 'last-call' massacre of a great Stones tune. Is this supposed to be a statement? Of what? Lack of faith in your own stuff? Patti Smith just finished "Gimme Shelter" by announcing it was a Stones tune. Gee, thanks for clearing that up. 10:21, PATTI SMITH DROPS THE N-BOMB, A LOT: Kinda figured Patti Smith would do "Rock and Roll Ni**er," just to stir things up. She just walked past an African-American guy in the wings leaving the stage. Only slightly awkward. 10:24, SINCE WHEN IS TRIBUTES A VERB?: Actual scroll on the broadcast: "Stay tuned as Rev. Al Sharpton TRIBUTES rock and roll hall of fame legend James Brown." Who wrote this s**t? Al Sharpton? 10:26, MAN, COULD I GO FOR A COMMERCIAL RIGHT NOW: Make this 15-minute Zeppelin/Neil Young jam of "When the Levee Breaks" & "For What It's Worth" from 1995 stop. At least my cats get to heighten the experience with catnip. Me, I gotta stay sober to come up with this stuff, believe it or not. 10:30, MAN, COULD I GO FOR THE TWO-HOUR EDITED-FOR-TV VERSION OF THE ROCK AND ROLL HALL OF FAME CEREMONIES RIGHT NOW: How do you fill the dead-spots in a live four-hour awards ceremony broadcast? Cut to Patti Smith in the press room giving a soliloquy on why she used the N-word in "Rock and Roll Ni**ger." The LIVE Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Induction ceremonies: IT'S ELECTRIC, BABY! 10:34, AL SHARPTON MAKES A FUNNY (while tributing James Brown): "I played "The Big Payback" today thinking about Strom Thurmond." HIYO!!!! 10:42, LET ME MAKE THIS PERFECTLY CLEAR: The only way Sammy Hagar should be getting into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is by buying a ticket. Van Hagar IS NOT Van Halen. 10:47, VELVET REVOLVER INDUCTS VAN HALEN: Was Audioslave busy? This is why the rock Hall pretty much sucks. It's a complete corporate set-up. Velvet Revolver has nothing to do with VH. They have a new album coming out, plain and simple. I DID NOT just hear them plugging Sammy Hagar's tequila, did I? Oh man, this is grimmer than grim. Weiland is delivering his lines like it's he's giving a book report on pistons at a vocational school. What a poseur tool. 10:51, HOW'D TOM ARNOLD GET ONSTAGE?: My bad. It's VH bassist Michael Anthony. He just said he loves Eddie Van Halen. Dude, Eddie kicked you out of the band. Man, Sammy and Michael Anthony accepting this honor is like Newman and Putty accepting an Emmy award for "Seinfeld." Lame analogy, I know, but I'm getting… very… sleepy. 10:53, VELVET REVOLVER IS CURRENTLY DESTROYING ONE OF THE FIVE GREATEST ROCK SONGS OF ALL TIME: "Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love." Eloquence escapes me. This is a f**kin sham, a travesty and a crying shame. Why is Weiland singing like Sideshow Bob? Why's he even singing this at all? 11:02, WHY CAN'T THIS JUST STOP?: I'm currently watching Sammy Hagar and Michael Anthony waddle around onstage doing "Why Can't This Be Love" with horns and Paul Shaffer's boys backing him up. Eddie, if this isn't enough to make you want to get sober RIGHT NOW, nothing will. 11:12, THE LAST WORD ON VELVET REVOLVER: Velvet Revolver. Sounds like the name of a strip club in northeast Philly, no? 11:17, HOVA IN THE HOUSE!: Jay-Z inducting Grandmaster Flash & the Furious Five. I could be wrong, but this might be the first speech ever read from a Blackberry. 11:33, THROW YOUR HANDS IN THE AIR: Telling a room full of lubed record execs to wave their hands from side to side at this late hour is just axing for trouble… 11:41, TONIGHT'S BEST PERFORMANCE, BY FAR: "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" - Tom Petty, Jeff Lynne, Prince, Steve Winwood, Dhani Harrison, et al, FROM 2002!!!! Pretty sad when the highlight of the night is a clip from five years ago used to fill time in the broadcast. 11:56, IT'S ALMOST THE END OF THE SHOW AS WE KNOW IT, AND I FEEL ALMOST FINE: R.E.M. hasn't put out a good record since their original drummer Bill Berry left. So never underestimate the power of the drummer. Even if he doesn't write a lick of the music, he might simply be the internal gatekeeper, the guy that says `That sucks,' 'Try this,' 'Don't try that," 'That's good,' etc. Great speech by Eddie Vedder. If Pearl Jam ever hangs it up, he should do the rock ceremony circuit as a speaker. Dude always knocks it out of the park, 'specially his Ramones induction a few years back. I'm the one guy who likes R.E.M's mid and later stuff more than the early stuff. Regardless, I definitely think they belong in the hall. The first underground American band to really go overground, like stadiums, hit singles, the whole bit. A quick thought at this late hour: they might be one of a handful of contemporary Rock Hall-worthy rock bands to emerge since the '80s. Throw in Nirvana, Metallica, Radiohead, and, I dunno, Green Day? The Chili Peppers? William Hung? Too late to open that can of worms right now. 12:30, THE GRAND FINALE: Poor Sammy Hagar. I'm actually feeling sorry for the poor bastard. All the artists are jamming and Michael Stipe keeps looking at him like he's a party crasher. Patti Smith is avoiding him like he's got a scorching case of herpes. Wait, there goes Keith Richards hugging him. Probably thinks he's Bette Midler. Last edited by Livia; 03-13-2007 at 12:59 PM.. |

Also, Brian J. - I remember reading somewhere that Prince has each guitar restrung and sprayed with finger ease before every single performance. Come to think of it, I don't think I've ever NOT seen him hand his guitar off to a tech after each song.
