Thumbs down Boston's Progressive Talk is now Rumba

Two AM stations make switch to Latino music
By Clea Simon, Globe Correspondent | December 20, 2006

Goodbye Air America, hello "Rumba." Tomorrow at noon, Clear Channel stations WKOX-AM (1200) and WXKS-AM (1430) will switch from "Boston's Progressive Talk" to "La Nueva Rumba," both simulcasting a "tropical" format of primarily Spanish-language announcers and music, ranging from salsa, merengue, and bachata to the contemporary sound of reggaeton. Spearheading the new format, which carries the tagline "Orgullo Latino" ("Latino Pride"), is Rafael "Raffy" Contigo, a 26-year veteran of both English- and Spanish-language radio who has already flipped Clear Channel-owned stations in other markets...

I'm lost without my Stephanie Miller. Although she's on vaca anyway and I haven't been listening.

Ugh. That's awful. I wonder how long AA has left in Austin. I only listen to that and NPR (and I increasingly can't stand NPR's news programs). Maybe when I get my next car I'll tell them to just not put a radio in the damn thing at all. Perhaps it'll save me a few bucks.

That's really surprising considering Boston being one of the most liberal cities in America. It's unfortunate.

I just sucks sucks sucks. Ironically I hadn't been listening much but that's because everyone's on vacation. Elaine Boozler is good but she's no Stephanie Miller. If I had been listening when it switched over, not knowing it had switched, I might have driven off the road.

I wonder if you could talk a dealer into taking out the radio and knocking $$$ off. But then you might want a CD/MP3 player anyway.

Dammit dammit dammit.

Air America had so many financial problems right from the get go. If you can't have a successful progressive talk station in Boston, then where can you have it?

They had to have severely mismanaged things and that is sad.

clear channel has been there, done that here. while i don't think we ever had air america, philadelphia acquired rumba to its dial in place of an adult contemporary station back in august. if the arbitron ratings aren’t there, goodbye.
