anything and everything you wanted to know about the ledge

Can someone explain to me the purpose of the buddy list?
Is this for people with really terrible memories so that they know who their friends are?

I tried using it, and the only thing I noticed was that there was a little + next to my buddies' names when they were online.

i think its a way to keep your pms down. Like-you can specify that only your buds can send you messages. But other than that i want to know how you become a member of a group. Ive never seen anyone that is.
