Question The Dark at the Top of the Stairs

Has anyone ever seen or heard of this play? I just received a bulletin from an employment website that also lists community events, and a link at the bottom jumped out: "Dark at the Top of the Stairs"

It's playing in Chicago thru October: http://www.atcweb.org/onstage/nowplaying.php

It was written by William Inge: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Inge

Edit: I also just noticed the play was adapted for film: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Dar..._of_the_Stairs

Summary from the (referring) website:
A classic drama of repressed passions and simmering tension set in the 1920s. After an explosive fight with her husband, a young housewife must comfort her fragile son and get her wallflower daughter ready for a blind date.

Given that Stevie wrote "Julia" after seeing the movie Julia, and "Beauty and the Beast" after seeing ... you can see where I'm going with this. Obviously there isn't a song with the same title, but Stevie's inspiration for songs, even certain phrases always fascinates me.

Because I'm way too lazy to look it up...I'll just have to wonder which came first - the song or the play.

The play is from 1957, the movie from 1960.

The cast of the film sounds great. I think I'll send in a request to Turner Classic Movies. Maybe they'll show it.

Since you've seen it, do you see any connection with SOTM? Imagery, mood, motif? It's possible Stevie just liked the title. That is, of course, if there is any connection at all.

I just looked it up. It's from 1960, based on a play from 1957.

Repressed passions?
Simmering tenions?
Explosive fights?

I think you may be on to something here, I really do...
