Whoa! I'm listening to KFOG right now (internet radio is great), and they're playing Stop Draggin' My Heart Around. When it first started, I thought "cool!", but then when the singing started, it was just Tom singing. I've never heard this before. It sounds so weird... just not right. I know it's his song, but I like the way Stevie sings it much better. I guess I'm a little biased. Plus, I almost always like the first version of a song that I hear the best.

i actually like tom's "free fallin'" a little better. i guess this goes back to how i always seem to prefer the version of a song that i hear first. even the song "oh well".... i heard lindsey's version first, and i still like his better than peter green's original. yes, i'm strange........

I agree with you Kathy!!
This version of Stop Draggin' My Heart Around is on Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers 6-cd box set "Playback". I thought the same thing when I heard Tom singing the whole thing--it's just strange.......I mean, it's not bad, he does it good too......Stevie's is just better.....and it doesn't sound right with just Tom's voice. This is actually the first version of this song ![]() What really is so strange too, is that when Stevie put her vocals on the song, they used this same track....so it's basically the same exact song, only a different voice singing it!!!!! But in the booklet that goes with the box set, Tom even says something about how he needed to hear his version and Stevie's version to see just how different they are.......well, let me get the box set and I'll just transcribe what the booklet says: "Stop Draggin' My Heart Around" "The crafty Iovine had scored big by lifting "Because the Night", a song from a Springsteen album he was working on, and giving it to Patti Smith, and he pulled the old switch again with this Heartbreakers outtake he passed onto Stevie Nicks. Originally Petty had offered Nicks "Insider", but that turned out to be exactly the sort of song she wrote all the time. She wanted something different from what she could come up with and "Stop Draggin' My Heart Around" was it. Stevie cut her hit version over the Heartbreakers track. This is the original. Listening to it now, Petty says, "I realized it's really a very different song when I sing it."" Stephanie
