Don't be frightened of new culinary experiences, Deanna. Let love guide you--into the very abyss, if God will it.

To quote from Whitman:
"Untold want by life/And land ne'er granted/Now, voyager, sail though forth/To seek & find!"

I like Greek food too! Hey, Elie - are souvlakis really Greek, or is that Americanized? How about Gyros?

I'm assuming that the breakfast specials and Texas Hots (aka - slime dogs, **** canoes, hot dogs with meat sauce, whatever you want to refer to them as) that we can order at most Greek restaurants here are obviously American.

Really? Maybe it's a Buffalo thing. We are the land of all things healthy, you know.

It's a hot dog on a bun, topped with this hideous sauce (similar to a chili dog, but not a chili dog.) I don't even know what's in the sauce, it's brownish red, I think there's ground beef in there. Barf. I don't think I've ever actually eaten one, the smell is quite enough. Hubby loves them.

As far as I can tell calling hotdogs "hots" is a Rochester/Buffalo/Western New YOrk thing. When I first got here I was like, "What the hell are hots and ground rounds!?!"

And did you hear/read the story recently that Zweigles had to change the name of their Red Hots and White HOts in other parts of the country - no one was buying them because they thought they were spicy lol.

Hots. Just call them hotdogs!!! Stupid Rochester

Ah, so is ground round strictly a dumb Rochester thing? They're hamburgers. I refuse to eat at a place that calls it a ground round lol.

Ok - so do you guys over in Buffalo have garbage plates or any variety of a garbage plate?

Seriously - I'm not that adventerous in my eating, but Rochester should get an award for the most mediocre or just bad restaurants

Stevie gave a great performance in Buffalo on July 2, 1983, at the old War Memorial arena. And Fleetwood Mac gave a fair-to-middling performance in Buffalo (at Orchard Park) on July 28, 1978, in the late afternoon hot sun. So Buffalo cannot be all bad! or even all healthy!

Garbage plates are all about Rochester, baby! Funny you mention it, I tried to do a search for a pic of a Texas Hot & found this:

http://www.geocities.com/garbageplates/

How this guy hasn't had a heart attack yet is beyond me. Of course, my brother once made it his mission to eat at every single Mighty Taco. He got to most of them.

I like Mexican and Italian food and that is about it. I am even fussy about what I will eat when I do eat those foods.

The '83 show was at the Buffalo Memorial Auditorium ("The Aud.") The '78 show was at the then 5 year old War Memorial Stadium (home of the Bills - then it was Rich Stadium, now it's Ralph Wilson Stadium.)

I have the audio from these, and I agree Stevie's Buffalo show kicks ass. The Mac show is OK, most notably for the early version of SOTM.

Italian food? Fussy? How would one manage that? It's all just pasta, marinara, cheese & olive oil. What's to be fussy about?

I must have had a blessed childhood because whenever I encounter people who eat virtually nothing except the squarest heartland food--people who seem afraid of anything else--I am just amazed & flummoxed. In my household, we ate (& still eat) an incredible variety of ethnic & homegrown foodstuffs, including those from Japan, Thailand, Vietnam, Korea, Russia, Greece, Turkey, Spain, Morocco, France, Germany, Italy, Britain, Portugal, Denmark, Sweden, India, Pakistan, Argentina, Brazil, the Caribbean, Hawaii & Polynesia, not to mention all over the U.S.

Why so fussy about so much food? have you tried anything novel or different? why so afraid to do so? You might actually like a little here, a little there. Next time you saunter past a Greek bistro, step in & order a shish-kebob of lemon-marinaded chicken or lamb, or when you drive past a Vietnamese cafe, pull in & try a Vietnamese roll of chicken & cilantro wrapped in rice paper.

You won't die. Just keep repeating to yourself, "I won't die. I won't die."

1000 points for using the word "flummoxed." We should really try to use that word more, it's neat.

I know for me, at first, it wasn't fear of "dying," it was not wanting to spend money on something I wasn't sure I'd like. Being on a budget, it really pisses me off when I try something new & hate it, I feel like I've wasted my money.

A bunch of us at work started a little dinner club, where we'd go out to a different place every month, almost always "ethnic". That way, we got to share things & find out what we liked. It was great until we realized that none of us could stand one of the "members" and we had no way of getting rid of her. So it's petered out as of late.
