I recently saw the Deer Hunter for the first time, and it moved me to say the least. I have yet to see Coming Home but I was having a discussion with a movie friend of mine about the fierce rivalry that existed between these 2 films. Of course, Deer Hunter won best picture and Coming Home took Actor and Actress for 1978, but what I found interesting is how Jane Fonda dissed Deer Hunter pretty bad from what I've read. I would like some perspective from knowledgeable movievewers on this subject. Thank you.

Coming home , it's more than anything a stage for a great Jane Fonda and a good but sometimes overacting John Voight. My favourite in the movie is Bruce Dern, by the way. Romy

Neither of them, actually, but if I was forced to choose I'd go with "Coming Home." "Coming Home" is a Lifetime movie before the advent of Lifetime & "The Deer Hunter" is one of the sickest movies I've ever seen while not being convincing in the least. There's a reason Cimino doesn't work these days: he's an atrocious director.

, but still think he's a great director who can't work anymore because 1) He made lose too much money to Hollywood, 2) He seems now, unfortunately, not very stable.Romy

. By the way, there's at least a real beautiful scene inthe film, David Morse's death near the mountains. It was a touching homage to John Ford. Romy

Replying to the first post, I have to say "Deerhunter". It is one of my two favorite movies of all time (the other one being "All that Jazz", by Bob Fosse).
No matter how many times I see it, I always get shiver during the scene where the soldiers are in the water and the vietnamese soldiers are playing the russian rulette and of course, towards the end, the meeting between De Niro and Christopher Walken - who is IMO, a brilliant actor in general. Coming Home is also very good, but not such a unique movie, IMO. |
