You know, when I first read this thread, I thought, I don't know, nobody these days seems to really be following the Stevie model, no matter you define it, but I think Gwen Stefani is a really good answer. They have followed somewhat similar career paths. Gwen's even "guest starred" on some other folks' singles as Stevie used to do back in the day. The main difference, though, being that Gwen is certainly much more adventurous when it comes to broadening her musical palette and trying new things.

I don't think anyone is like Stevie. No one that I can think of has the combination of a distinctive voice, unique songwriting, a consistent "look", and a trademark stage move (i.e., the "spin"). Nor do they have the aura/mystique that Stevie had for so many years.

Gwen Stefani is an interesting answer to the question, but I think she changes her style too much to be much of a comparison. That seems to be the way for most female artists, they feel the need to reinvent themselves constantly.

Yeah, what's the deal with that? I wish they'd just pick ten songs out of their catalogue, and stick to performing those every night for the next twenty years.

Joss Stone definately has a "young" Stevie feel to her. Her clothes, her hair, her voice is alittle raspy, she even has the scarf on the mic stand!

Now, I don't know who all these people are, but I looked at this picture of Joss Stone. I have to say, she is one sorry-looking bum. She looks as if SHE were the one hanging out at the laundromat in "Docklands." Maybe I'm just nostalgic or naive, but I never thought Stevie went for that dog's-dinner look back when she was Stone's age.

Hey! "Stone's age," get it?!

Nice scarf on the mic stand, though. Although Steven Tyler's been doing that in Aerosmith for decades.

Stevie's style (or what's left of it) is really one of a kind, I think -- which doesn't make it "better" or even worth keeping. It just makes it ... one of a kind!

Joss has a beautiful voice, you should check her out some time. It was actually a compliment to Stevie. Other then the exposed midriff, I'd say the 70's hippie look is right on.

You call it dog's dinner, I call it bohemian gypsy.

I'm still recovering from her duet for Divas Live with Debbie on "One Way Or Another." She hit some notes that had not yet been discovered by the human ear. And I almost ralphed when she pranced around onstage BAREFOOT and in that "I'll-wear-dishrags-and-call-it-personal-style" get-up, shouting "I know where you park your car, I know your phone number, I know your mother's number, I even know your social secutiy numbah! Gonna gitcha! One way, baby!" Oy vey. 'Twas my first real exposure to La Stone and it didn't whet my appetite for more. Then I saw her on the Brit Awards with Robbie Williams and I sat in utter amazement, wondering if she knew what "pitch" is.

^ The girl can sing. I guess I like her because of her raspy voice, after all that's what first caught my attention with Stevie. Joss's first cd, "The Soul Sessions" is awesome, give it a listen before you judge. Live performances are not always the greatest, as we know from Stevie. I guess I'm just more open minded and easier to please when it comes to music. The question was "What female artist today would you think is most like Stevie??????????", I was mostly comparing style and just giving my opinion.

I like Joss, I've played her videos at Omega. Super Duper and You Had Me are great. I think it is the video for Got A Right To Be Wrong where she is wearing the Stevie esq shawl. All in all, Joss Stone is pretty cool.

Easy to please, maybe, but I wouldn't go calling people less open-minded than you just because they don't like a particular artist that you like. That's, well, not very open-minded.
