Be sure to wear good shoes, David. And really work up a sweat. But don't exercise to the point of actual pain or exhaustion. Do you have health insurance? If so, ask your primary care physician to give you a resting EKG. Tell him or her that you are starting an exercise regimen & want to be sure the old ticker is okay.

Good for you! And very smart to begin with walking. Too many people just decide to start running, and really overdo it, and wind up hurting themselves. If you do decide to start running eventually - start SLOWLY. Like run one minute, walk two minutes. Run one, walk two. And only add to that gradually over a number of weeks. David's right - it's a good idea to see your doctor before starting a new exercise regime - but you may also want to consult a running professional (or a trainer) to suggest a beginner's schedule.

Good luck!
