How do we know that it wasn't Nicole that was unable to produce kids? Was that ever really disclosed who was infertile?

She was supposedly pregnant right before they divorced but miscarried.

I thought that he was the infertile one. Wasn't he married before Nicole,too? Of course it could just be a rumour but I always thought it was him or maybe both of them had problems.
