I listened to a 1991 tour today and she sounded worse than 1989. It's 2 years later. What do you guys think? Was she worse in 91 than 89? She wasn't sober by then so two more years of Klonopin..

I def. think so. Sadly, I missed the 91 tour because of Law School - but she apparently was out of it by then - between pot, Klonopin, Valium, drinking, etc. - she is way lucky to have come out of that But, that which does not kill us makes us stronger

It had it's moments. Some of the boots I've heard, it seems like she is trying to sing over the band. It's my least favorite of all of her touring bands.

I thought she sounded quite a bit worse in '91 than in '89. On both tours, she refused to sing with any vibrato, which stripped her delivery of dynamics, but at least in '89 she was able to hit tone most of the time, & had greater control & range.

In contrast, by 1991, she consistently missed tone by a half step, she lost upper range (for example, she could not have sung & held the "Alice" note the way she did in 1989). The lack of control, the nonpliability & the tonelessness were all aggravated by an aggressively metal-minded band who made the worst possible mistakes in interpreting her songs instrumentally: broken-armed Les Dudek had no more feel for playing Stevie Nicks or Fleetwood Mac material than the average dunderhead in a downtown bar, & Cat Gray must have thought he was playing Emerson Lake & Palmer material half the time, considering how ridiculously frenzied & over-the-top his piano arrangements were. Plus, the whole group played at earsplitting levels of sludge (unlike old Fleetwood Mac, who also played at earsplitting levels but infused the extreme volume with dynamicism) & the sound guy that year was either deaf or asleep. Finally, her stage clothes in 1991 were once described -- & very astutely, I should add -- as "the Sunday clothes of working-class matrons on their way to church in Biloxi circa 1951."

I took some friends of mine for their very first Stevie Nicks concert to the show at Concord Pavilion, & I was utterly embarrassed (although my friends were polite). But, not surprisingly, they have never wanted to see another Stevie Nicks concert.

Here's what I liked about the 1991 tour: the set, & Eddie M.'s saxophone solo on "If Anyone Falls"

David I really appriciate your insight into these things (although I don't always understand the technical stuff). You've obviously had some musical training and I envy you for that so please feel free to keep talking cause I I'll be listening!

I agree abou the 91' tour from the boots that I've heard. That is why I don't understand why people are always saying TOSOTM tour was so bad and she just stood there because this one seems worse. I have a video from 1991 and I'm going to watch it this weekend.

You know, I'm reading all this guff about the Mirror tour and I really enjoyed it. The Street Angel tour I will admit I was not crazy about, but then again it was more about some crap that was happening around me more than Stevie's performance. The friends I came with spend the whole show talking... "What song is this? Do you think she's going to sing Gypsy? I don't know this, is this Gypsy? Why won't she sing Gypsy, I'm mad." Oh it was really annoying. Then some guy behind me was harrassing me the whole time because I was standing up in front of him. Everyone around us was standing but because I was in front of him he was all mad. So he started thowing stuff at me, crumbled up paper, hot dogs, whatever he had on him. I swear I'm not making this up. And when we went to leave he spat on me! So yeah, it was my least favorite concert. Funny thing is that I have a video of that show to commemorate the occasion. LOL!!!

While it's true that vocally she was better in 1989 on the "OSOTM" tour than in 1991 on the "Whole Lotta Trouble" tour, visually the 1991 tour was better...

The "OSOTM" tour was probably the most boring "rock" show she ever put on.. Her setlist was laced with her adult contemporary staples and her band was really awful... The keyboardist was especially bad as his synths during "Stand Back" made it sound like a nursery rhyme...

in contrast, the 1991 tour was much more rockin'... true, the band was more metal than any of her other bands before or since, but i'll take a "rockin" version of "Outside The Rain" over a watered down AC version any day, thanks..

I personally would have much rather have seen a 1991 Stevie concert over a 1989 one... Of all the bootleg vids i have, her 1989 shows are the ones I watch the least... why? cuz they are so boring
