10-foot-tall guitar art to be shown downtown

PHOENIX - Alice Cooper is scheduled to officially launch GuitarMania on Friday at a public unveiling in downtown Phoenix.

More than 80 local and celebrity artists, including Eddie Van Halen, Stevie Nicks and the Gin Blossoms, have created art pieces using 10-foot-tall Fender Stratocasters for the project. The guitars will be on display at America West Arena and outside Bank One Ballpark from Friday through Sunday.

The following weekend, individual guitars will be moved to public locations around the Valley but won't be displayed as a collection until they are auctioned off Feb. 4. The proceeds will benefit Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Central Arizona and the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Education Fund.

Boy that sounds really cool. I cant wait to see pictures of this. That is if people can stand the 100,000 degree heat to take them.

ok well, i work down at bank one ballpark (or chase something or other, they just renamed it today) and i searched and searched downtown, almost got a jaywalking ticket, and couldn't find stevie's guitar. i talked to someone who knew how hers was decorated and he gave me a description, so i searched and searched again, this time reading the plaques carefully and examining the guitars... and i couldn't find stevie's.... THEN i noticed through the window that there are some INSIDE america west arena... from what i could tell of the description i was given, none of them match.... BUT there was one guitar that was sort of turned sideways and is up against a stairway that i could not get a view of. with my luck, this ONE guitar that i cannot see is probably Stevie's guitar.

i asked the security guard who was guarding the guitars if they were going to let people inside AWA at some point to see the guitars that were inside and he told me that i could buy a ticket to tomorrow's concert and go in to look at it. HA. i REALLY don't feel like going to see styx and reo speedwagon.

soooo, any phoenix ledgies planning to see Styx and Reo Speedwagon tomorrow?

I like it. It is not that fancy but it is very Stevie. The hands definately remind me of the Say You Will cover.

I agree. I don't like it much. I was thinking it was going to be much cooler than it was when I opened that link.
