Tickets will be mighty pricey, trust me. As for airing on television, I have my doubts. They already did one this past Friday and there's another planned for this Friday with Sheryl Crow, Neil Young, Paul Simon, the Dixie Chicks, and a slew of others.

I venture to guess they'll be VIP tickets which will cost a significant amount of money and then, I figure there will be reduced price nosebleeds (i.e. $60+) for those that want to attend a worthy cause and don't have as much to spare. I'm highly doubting this will be broadcast simply because of the slew of events already occuring. If it is, i'll be very surprised.

Well, I think Rhiannon is perhaps the most potentially offensive of all. My memory is muddled, but wasn't Rhiannon the harbinger of death in Welsh legend ? Stevie singing "Rhiannon" would be sort of like BOC singing "(Don't Fear) the Reaper." .

But then again, how can the Neville Brothers NOT perform one of their better-known songs like "Fire on the Bayou"? That's pretty offensive on the face of it... but at the same time, that's the reality of what is happening in their hometown. They just have to do it.

Also, I don't know how they can do a benefit that is one continuous somber dirge. There will be poignant moments as well as up moments. I mean, how many downer songs is Earth Wind and Fire known for?? At the Concert for New York following 9/11 there was also a lot of anger... and there is perhaps an even greater degree of anger to be vented here at the incompetency of our government. I would love for Stevie to rip Dubya a new opening with "Long Way to Go." Ain't gonna happen, but one could only dream...

I think she will do HAEWAFY and hopefully "Whenever I call you Friend" with Loggins and Messina (in a much lower key of course ). But I also think Eo17 would be perfect. Not only was it one of her biggest hits, it is upbeat, but very intense, but still cathartic. I think "Gypsy" is also hopeful, but at the same time, potentially offensive, considering there are now a half million real-life gypsies roaming the southland...

Oy, this is tough...

Default Offensive?

You look at many of the other music telathons (I don't know what you want to call them) that have been happening lately -- the point of these get-togethers is to get people buying tickets and into the venue (if it's an actual event) or donating money to support this cause. I'm assuming most if not all of the proceeds garnered through this concert will be going directly to helping the victims through either an organization like Red Cross or through some other means. That said, in order to pack people in and have them spend money on said tickets (assuming most are incredibly expensive), these performers need to be doing something either once in a lifetime (a la a duet with one of the other performers) OR their hits. Yes, it's for a cause and that's what we should be most focused on. However, people are going to see a concert as well -- as horrible and trivial as that sounds in these peoples time of need -- the concert goer wants something too (not me necessarily but in general). These performers have signed on to lend their name and talent to raise money to help the people in the affected areas -- I wouldn't necessarily say they're performing for them as most of them more than likely won't get to see it (especially if it isn't televised). Therefore, I don't think we need to worry about a lyric having to do with rain, water, etc.

I agree that no one should be worried about something as trivial as a lyric that has the words "rain" or "water" in them, but I do think that the performers and organizers of such things should be concerned about using decorum and being appropriate. Singing "Dig your grave" and stuff like that would do nothing to ensure that those things are adhered to. Keep it light and hopeful and bouncy and loving, but don't go out there and depress people even more.

that's why "Stand Back" would be the logical choice for her to do.. if she only gets one song, she should probably do that one.. if she gets to do two, "HAEWAFY" should be the other.. but by looking at the long list of performers for this show, it will most likely be just 1 song and a duet with one of the others..

To Stevie, Rhiannon is the song that helps heal people. She quotes from it & sings it for people who are lying in cancer ward beds (remember the letter to Patrick?), or sends it to troops facing bombs & bullets overseas.

I would think Rhiannon would be the first song Stevie would want to sing in the aftermath of a disaster.

Now, I happen to think Stevie sort of misinterprets the Rhiannon mythology, & that your take on it is closer to its essence in Celtic lore (I discussed the Stevie Nicks angle of it once with Dorothea Kenny, a Celtic & Irish literature scholar from UCLA, & she just sort of cocked her head quizzically at Stevie's Rhiannon comments). But very few people would have read Graves or Frazier or Celtic myths, so the possibly offensive use of the motif in a Stevie Nicks song seems to me a moot point.

Not even that but how many people actually know the mythology of Rhiannon to even consider it offensive?

My thoughts exactly. The only people who would know much about the mythology would be the die-hard Stevie fans who attend and I highly doubt they'd take offense to her singing it.

That's what I meant when I said "oh, no, she couldn't do that one either, then." It's fast, but it's not really upbeat, if you think about the lyrics. Although considering Bush and FEMA's actions, they may be appropriate, ie "In the middle of the room I did not hear from you!" and "To be standing in line....You coobe standing in a line....I would cry..."
