Exactly. that's why I said they expect it to double.

God, only one hospital in NO is open. It held up, though. Most, if not all, of the people in there need electricity, though. It just gets more horrible. They're trying to evacuate all who can go, neonatal is staying. The generator can't run the air conditioner and all the other stuff, but the heat is actually helping the babies because they have to be kept warm, anyway.

Again, able bodied people ignored the evacuation warnings and now FEMA has had to spend precious time rescuing them. How is that W or FEMA's fault. Interestingly, in MS, there really is no rescue effort as opposed to NOLA, which is flooded. The people in MS are just mostly dead, which is horrible.
It's tragic that more people weren't evacuated... a hurricane is one of the few natural disasters that can be predicted. You don't have that kind of luxury before an earthquake.

As for Shrub... he had to cut his five-week vacation short by two days... poor thing. I won't blame a hurricane on him, but I did see pictures of him playing a guitar at a photo op... while New Orleans was flooding and people were dying. Also, thanks to Shrub, many of our National Guard troops are participating in the disaster in Iraq... they would probably be useful in Louisiana, Mississippi, etc. right now.

Once again, no President I can rememeber ever stopped everything they were doing for a hurricane They order the funds and visit the site later. So, by your logic all Presidents, not just W, are at fault. Interetingly, W actually did more than most by ordering the Fed aid before the storm hit, which has saved countless lives.

As for the National Guard stuff, there seem to be enough people in the area to effectuate the rescue missions in NOLA. There also seem to be enough vehicles and such to rescue people and hopefully repair the levees soon as that is the key to al of this. So, alluding to the absent NG people and vehicles as a significant problem is not really supported by the facts, though I cannot stand W as you know.

My beef is why weren't the supply trucks already loaded prior to the end of the storm and on their way. Having said that, supplies were there in that people were fed in the dome and supplies have already arrived in Biloxi. So, some suplies - and a significant number at that - were there. I think there is a problem disbursing them because the area, esp. NOLA, is not really able to be travelled without peril.

We shall see how it plays out, but as of now, I give the Feds a B+. I think if they do not start handing out help in haste and evcuate all of NOLA in the next two days, that opinon will drop in many peoples' opinions, including mine. But, as of now, it has been one hell of an effort.

Anyway, that is my $0.02

On edit - I am lecturing - I apologize

All of NOLA is ordered evacuated. I think they are ordering ambulances and choppers to effectuate that for the sick. Sadly, Acadian Ambulance, one of the largest in the state, suspended services because people were attacking the ambulances.

This just gets sicker.

I may do myself a favor and not look at it tommorow.

yeah? This live program I just watched said some staff and patients were staying for now, especially neo natal, as the babies would be extremely hard to evacuate.
It does get sicker. I can't stand it. My heart is breaking a thousand times a day. And you're from there. Hope you're okay, and your mom and brother.

They are all okay. But, imagine not being able to go back to your house for like three months - which is what my brother is facing. Fotunately, he has a free place to stay and people to help with his 3 year and 6 month old. I am sure there are people who are looking at renting a hotel room for that period of time and having no income.

Moreover, what is Louisiana going to do. Three months of no tax rev. from its most productive city will tank it.

Hopefully, W will deliver with the dollars.

Well, this doesn't seem to be the average hurricane, especially if thousands are dead.

Then I guess everything is OK? There don't seem to be enough NG troops to prevent anarchy in New Orleans.

Hopefully. I can suggest a plan that would free up a lot of money...
Thank goodness they are okay, I was under the impression your mom lived near there. Oh, man, your brother has a 3 and 6 month old? Blessings to him. And there are millions of stories worse than that.
I didn't even think of the no revenue thing. This is truly an epic disaster. Do you think they'll rebuild in the same place? It seems foolish to me, but I'm not too familiar with the geographical nuances of LA. It seems before the hurricane, NO spent tons of money keeping the water out. I saw a show last night, it said NO has the most complex system of pumps and levees, etc, in the world.

True - but my point was and is he acted and in a good manner prior to the storm.

What would they do? Arrest the looters and put them on the next bus out of town? I guess they could put them in the cholera ridden water and on on every block. But, that makes little sense as well. Nonetheless, the Pres. ordered 10,000 reservists into duty. So, apparently available manpower is not an issue. Note - I still cannot stand W.

I like debating you

Seriously, I think W has done nothing wrong as of yet and in fact he has done more than most Pres. have in similar situations. Does anyone remember how horribly his father acted in Andrew, which was similarly devastating at least in monetary means. You would think W would have learned from that. Yet, his execution of the plan is starting to appear too slow a la his father in 92.

My parents live about 80 miles to the West as the crow flies. So, they are safe.

Also, NOLA does have a very advanced pumping sytem and levee system. The problem is the jackasses designed it for a category 3 hurricane. I mean how dumb do you have to be to build something that half assed. I will never get it. But, to its credit, the levees held during the hurricane and broke much later and the pumpng system is functional.

yeah, you'd think if they are already building it for a 3, they could build it for a five. The thing is about that, they should have anticipated, since NO is a bowl with water all around above it, that water would flood in during a hurricane.
Anyway, we'll see what happens. The first volunteer classes from the bay area are full, so that is good. I'm sure similar things are happening all around the country.
In the midst of the footage of looting, and rescue and people helping each other, they cut to a "woman on the street" and she said "I was taught that when you help one person, you help the whole world." That was a small thing, but it was very heartening to me to hear it, as was the footage of everyone else they showed who were helping those that couldn't help themselves as well.
*sigh*.
Try to have a good night.

So now they have suspended airlifts out of the superdome because the rescue helicopers are being fired out.

Must be from all those guns stolen from the NO Walmart.

That pisses me off. There is no good reason for these assholes to be firing on the rescue personnel.
