Tent city was inhumane. No question about that.

Again, how does posting the article you did clear up that. The article you posted did not mention the evacuations. The second one did though.
I try to be thorough.

I know you were not talking about that, but I feel it is important to acknowledge that there are different types of looters in this case. In fact, it is probably safe to assume as Nancy Grace did this evening that some people stayed behind to protect their possessions, which is insane, but when that store is all you have - how is that different from these people stealing to survive, esp. when the shelters had food and water if they had just gone to them

Also, the gas lines this evening were like ten cars deep at each pump and at more than one station. Scary indeed.
yes i agree, i read that it is not illegal right now for them to loot essential items like food, water, diapers, etc...so yes its sad to see a mom running out of a store covering her face with diapers because shes embarassed, with some food on her shoulder..then you have bastards like you said taking advantage of the horrible tragedy and being very greedy, yes its very different situations

I mean if you want to argue that the cuts in funding somehow caused a lessened response - I suppose you could. But, the respose has been pretty good despite those cuts and those cuts are nothing new in that NOLA has ridden that train since at least the 70's and by all administrations and Congresses since then.

Well, in Mississippi, they'll shoot ya. That should make a few people on this board feel better.

I commented it on the early declaration of a state of emergency. After that, things went downhill quickly. You know they have f*cked this up royally. I know you do. Yet you act like it would be some kind of sin to admit to it.

and in NOLA, the looters shot a cop in the head. I cannot believe you are actually defending all of these looters - or are you?

Also, I have not heard of anyone being shot for looting in MS - please post the article.

Finally, I have sat in front of my house with a shotgun before waiting for looters after a hurricane. I think you think they knock on the door and politely ask for a handout (obviously for levity )

Well, they have evacuated thousands from roof tops and attics (which requires cutting) in NOLA. To me, that is not royally screwing up. What else did you want them to do?

It's right the hell above you. I never said anyone was shot.

You're talking to someone that was homeless once, not Pollyanna.

That's okay. We'll talk about it six months from now, just like we always do.

Well, you said "Well, in Mississippi, they'll shoot ya. That should make a few people on this board feel better. " If no one has been shot, then why make the statement

The only things that could have aided this situation were IMO:

1. better levees and pumps - which is an age old problem in NOLA, though some progress has been made in the last 20 years.

2. the forced evacuation of the entire Gulf Coast and NOLA - which falls to the states not the Feds.

Other than that, FEMA has done a pretty good job. Were there mistakes? I am sure there were, like not plugging those breached levees two days ago. That sucks! But, I am not an engineer and cannot really comment on the consequences of doing it incorrectly - it could, as reported, cause stress on another part and that part could fail.
