Is there nothing/no one your bf is obsessed with/passionate about? I'd much rather he understand the reason why I liked someone than share the opinion.
For example, my last long-term was obsessed with Madonna and Erasure. Me: Stevie and Eurythmics. At first there was some turntable & CD-player conflict, but eventually we grew to share each others' interests somewhat because we started to look for the "why" in the equation. Why did I burst into tears the first time I heard "Gold & Braid" over a stereo VCR hookup (after having listened to it in TV mono for 15 years)? Why could he never listen to "Oh Father" all the way through? I never forced Stevie on him & vice-versa. But after a while, he would play her music because he liked the effect it had on me - it made *me* feel good - and in turn, himself. I guess what I'm trying to say is - if the guy you're dating doesn't understand the passionate behavior, and isn't similarly obsessive about anything (music, video games, sports, etc.), then who or what you're passionate about is really irrelevant. Dump him for someone with a few more loose screws. ![]() |

My husband finds my obsession with Stevie amusing. His style of music is quite different, but we don't like, fight over the CD player or anything. In the ten years we've been together, we came with me to one Stevie show and one SYW show. He had a great time, but he probably wouldn't listen to her music alone in the car, etc. I would NEVER put my fandom before a relationship! I think if your love of Stevie intereferes with your relationship, you may want to re-think your level of fandom. Or, maybe you'll meet your soulmate at a Stevie show someday, and you won't have to worry about it!!!

I had one relationship with a guy that adored Stevie like I do and my current, who could give a flip.
I actually prefer it this way. Whereas everything I did concerning Stevie, I had to include the other guy, now it's more personal becuase it's just me. She's part of my 'Me Time.' Tom and I have things we share, but Stevie is not one of them and we're both ok with that, in fact we prefer it.

I've been Stevie obsessed since 1982 after a dear friend gave me Bella Donna but before Mirage was released and I've only had two relationships in my life. In my first relationship, the group of friends that I inherited from my boyfriend thought Stevie was neither cool nor relevant - it was the eighties and these people were certain she was washed up and on her way out. And my boyfriend was a smart and talented guy who clicked well with me except that he was pretty much a Stevie HATER and often made fun of Stevie to get me going. All his jokes were out of a serious disrespect for her either because of her voice, her hair (when you're gay making fun of somebody's hair is a serious attack) or her clothes. Needless to say the relationship didn't last more than a couple of years but he and I and many of the others have remained friends. I can tolerate any of my friends not liking her and bashing her to get me going but for me to have a relationship with somebody, I need to be able to bask in the glory of Stevie in front of them (i.e. watch videos, go to concerts, work on my doll) because she is a huge source of joy and pleasure in my life.
When I met my current partner, he told me he had an audio casette of himself singing along to the Wild Heart because he thought he could do a good imitation of her (he can't). Although he's always thought of her as a unique artist he cannot hold back a wisecrack anytime I mention her, and with him I don't mind one bit. In fact his jokes are the funniest I've ever heard about Stevie. Always picking on how many men she's slept with, or how hard she's partied. Changing lyrics to her songs (i.e. "I can't wait, I can't wait" becomes "I gained weight, I gained weight", "bit of gold and braid" becomes "bitter, old and gray")...he's hysterical. But most importantly he loves that I love Stevie - he doesn't have to love her the way I do but he has to understand how I feel about her and accept that she's an obsession that'll be a part of both our lives. And I guess he does because he's been with me at every Stevie or Fleetwood Mac concert I've attended since we've met almost 15 years ago - and I haven't missed a tour the entire time. |

Color me cynical because I am. I am also a sexist, but that's another story. Anyone that I am involved in a deep relationship with must have the same sense of humor, like the same music, and share my political philosophy. Without that, we would argue all the time. Love is all find and good but it is compatibility that makes or breaks a relationship. I can't see myself being with someone who doesn't appreciate my humor, my music and my political philosophy.
I am open to having an unconventional relationship with someone, but as far as living together and sharing a life, they need to love Stevie, laugh at everything from the Blue Collar guys to Chris Rock and be able to discuss politics in depth without wanting to kill me or the other way around. I don't ever assume or even hope that any guy I'm going to meet is going to love Stevie Nicks the way I do. Or even Fleetwood Mac. But as long as he accepts it about me, and loves me a little more for my little quirkiness, that's good enough for me.
I did date a guy who made fun of me for it - I told him it bothered me. He didn't stop. I dumped him. (Okay, there were other reasons, too) ![]()

[QUOTE=Lux]Blue Collar to Chris Rock? That's a very small span, you don't leave them much room to move.[/QUOTE
I thought that was a big span? Okay, how about Ellen to Steve Martin? I like just about everyone in comedy. I thought going from Blue Collar to Chris Rock was a big leap. I guess I really am out of it. Patty |
