I think the real reason it gets me is that they're mainly doing it to the kinds of acts (kasabian, kings of leon, and foo fighters specifically) where a large portion of their audiences are exactly the people who use digital music *legally* and own an MP3 player like an iPod.
that the copy protection is easy to get around and you can indeed make copies using WMP.

I will never be an iPod owner, Not after seeing the article on NBC Nightly news about how iPod's can easily cause hearing loss with the in-ear headphones no matter what level your volume is set to...Take away my hearing just give me a hollow point bullet and a few seconds of peace and I will die happily

The recording industry is a bunch of idiots, what next banning secod hand music stores b/c the artists don't make money on re-sales. Anyways aside from the fact that once you load the CD into your computer you can make multiple copies there is no reason why you couldn't make multiple copies off the first burned disc as I doubt the protection transfers, even if it does if you make two or three copies of the origional and then two or three copies off the 1st generation...you get the picture. Ppl are just greedy, and actually if I can help it I try not to spend $20 on a CD and spend $4 on the second hand record instead.

On the EXTREMELY RARE OCCASSION that I buy a cd from an actual store (not counting online), I go to Target (btw, their selection is crap), Best Buy (their prices aren't that great), or Tower Records (again, prices not that great) and still find the prices averaging in the neighborhood of $15-$20.

In any case, these places don't carry the things I'm most interested in or have only a very limited selection, which is why I generally buy from Amazon or directly from the artist.

You can use regular headphones (or external speakers) with them. I live by my iPod. It used to be when I took a trip, my carry-on baggage would be nothing but cases and cases of cds. Or if I just went out for a walk or something I'd spend an hour trying to decide which cd to take for my discman .
