Default Scientists sound alarm on Arctic ice cap

Satellite data for the month of June show Arctic sea ice has shrunk to a record low, raising concerns about climate change, coastal erosion, and changes to wildlife patterns.

The National Snow and Ice Data Centre in the United States uses remote sensing imagery to survey ice cover at both poles.

The centre says 2002 was a record low year for sea ice cover in the Arctic, since satellite observations began in 1979.

There's evidence that may have been the lowest coverage in a century.

Now scientists fear this year could be worse. June readings indicate the ice is at its lowest limit ever for that time of year.

"It actually melted back farther than normal pretty much everywhere around the Arctic," says Walt Meier of the National Snow and Ice Data Centre in the U.S.

"Where it's been retreating the most has been north of Alaska and north of eastern Siberia."

Meier says the amount of ice that covered the Arctic Ocean in the month of June this year shrunk by a record six per cent below the average rate for the month.

Meier says circulation patterns are bringing more storms and warmer air from the South into the region, and that's helping to break up the ice.

"June is really the first big month of melt in the central Arctic Ocean and so it's an indication that the melt is progressing faster than normal," he says. "And when you start melting the ice you're leaving the open ocean there which absorbs much more solar energy and so it tends to heat up even more."

Less sea ice means more moisture in the air and more rain.

It also leads to an increase in coastal erosion since the ice isn't there to buffer the shoreline from waves.

Meier says the ice has retreated almost everywhere in the Arctic except for a small area in the East Greenland Sea.

Dr. Andrew Derocher, a polar bear biologist at the University of Alberta in Edmonton, says less sea ice could have other impacts on northerners.

It could shorten the feeding time for polar bears and bring more of them into the communities.

"It may mean that they're going to have to be particularly careful and on the lookout for more bears than they might normally find in some of the areas where they're camping during the summer until the ice comes back," he says.

The National Snow and Ice Data Centre says Arctic sea ice usually recovers in the winter time.

But researchers have noticed ice has begun to decline in that season as well.

Now some scientists are wondering if the melting of the sea ice has already gone beyond a critical threshold from which it can't recover.

And meanwhile Smirky the Chimp continues to deny that global warming exists. His validated 91 IQ is really showing.

And yet the Bush administration continues to quietly enact policies that further endanger just about every aspect of our environment.

I just got something in the mail from Robert Kennedy for the Natural Resources Defense Council--I signed a petition to the President and my Senator and donated a bit of dough to help them get the word out. This is just getting ridiculous.

Don't be fooled - the reports aren't real - there is NO Global Warming trend!!!!

At least that's what some Republicans have been telling me

That really is scary - it's so obvious that our planet is going through some changes

Interestingly when driving through Maine this past weekend we couldn't help but notice how much cooler the places with lots of trees were. We still were not in shade but there was nothing but road up there and it was noticably cooler. I said to my Mom that if I can feel the difference trees make with my own senses how can it be denied that global warming exists? I wish god would tell Dubya that global warming is real. Dear god...

I, of course, blame all adminsitrations since the 60's for ignoring this. I get that some may have done more than others, but none of them did anything effective or significant, save perhaps for Carter, who was just ineffective.

is why do farmers feel it is alright to wipe out trees from their land, Yet they whine/cry like c*nts when their crops are burnt to a crisp...

I think our lot has more trees than other home here in Hellhole (aka Carnegie) and I am so glad they shade our house (Our highest electric bill in the past 13 years has been only $95) but all one has to do is look at the area in our backyard where there's no shade and the ground is scorched to the point the lawn wont need to be mowed until next Spring without any new rain amounts this Summer/coming Fall.

Hell, This area of Oklahoma has become a hot death valley more and more each passing Summer.

Nice. I just paid $275 on my power bill and I don't have my air conditioner running constantly like most people here either.

I hate the trend of getting rid of all indiginous trees for landscaping yards too. I just don't get it. You don't have to get rid of all the trees! Four big beautiful trees were just removed from next to my Mom's vacation home and it was devastating. Someone moved in next door and they were putting in a bigger home so they cut down the trees. It wasn't actually necessary but they are bringing their money into the association and money talks. The plus side is their place looks great and will reflect well on my Mom's property value. Also, they will supposedly be planting trees for each that was extracted. I really hope this is the case or they might find a bag of poop on their front porch.

Did they move the trees or just get rid of them. Many new construction sites are moving trees now, which is cool.
