Yeah, so don't agree with you there.

I use smilies to punctuate what I'm writing. Sometimes I just use them because I think they're funny. And I think your assertion that "Overdoing it on the smilies does make the person seem a tad less intelligent (no offense to all smilie lovers) just because it's like a tell that shows the world they aren't as good at writing" is insulting and, in most cases, just plain wrong (by the way, you had a grammatical error in that sentence). This is a message board - people are writing train of thought. No one is writing a Pultizer Prize winning novel. I know I'm not reading people's posts and judging their literacy. I'm sure no one is doing that to me either.

By the way, I'm a professional writer. I get paid money to write for some pretty important and smart people. And I STILL use smilies.

I agree with everything you said. Why are we pointing out grammatical errors in someone's post though?

Isn't it Pulitzer? Ok, I'm using a smilie this time.

(which I am good at, suprisingly). I've always expressed myself other ways, especially physical ways - sports, acting, singing, TALKING. And when I talk, I tend to be expressive, so the emoticons are a natural extension of that. So, since writing has never been a primary way for me to express myself, but talking has, and we're all "talking" here, it's just natural that I express myself in a more "conversational" manner, using the emoticons. Oh, and blahblahblahblah. It's nice when people are writers, and naturally express themselves better that way, but I'm more of an "emoter" so...
I totally feel what you are saying here Amber.
I don't even feel that its necessary to defend my use of smilies. I see a smilie on someone's post and it usually will spark a warm feeling inside of me. It's really not a big deal.

Then, so be it if that makes me unintellegent. I work at DOMINOS PIZZA afterall, so you can't expect much from me!

I'd like to say something else here. I figure that most dislike me around here now so why not just go for the gold. It is just something I picked up on when I read the person's post you quoted and then your post. I got the feeling he was trying not to offend and even saying "no offense to the smilie lovers". I didn't get the feeling he was trying to insult. When you posted back to him, you pointed out an error in grammar in his post which actually did sound a little insulting. Still, I've read your posts before this one and you sound like a nice person who doesn't try to insult or attack. But, it was sort of insulting. I wanted to reply to you and if I just posted "Isn't it spelled Pulitzer?" and nothing else, that would sound insulting even though you corrected his grammar, wouldn't it? If I didn't say beforehand that I agreed with your post and ended mine with a wink, it would have far more of a sting. So, I think I'm trying to say that smilies are cool either way but they don't exactly show how the person posting is really feeling. I think you just get to know the person, give him or her a chance, keep an open mind and go from there. Just my opinion.

Either way, I don't think it needed to be that harsh. I don't think seeing a smilie in someone's post ever left me to believe that person didn't have anything to say or didn't have the writing/mental tools to say it.

The smilies are not adding words to a sentence, it's just an addition of emotion, that is all.

And for you:

I can't even believe I've let this get to me at all, but it's been a rough week and a half on much more important fronts in my life. I'm not sure I agree with you, though. In real life, if someone makes a joke and that person makes it clear that no harm was meant, would you still follow that person and tell him or her that his or her joke wasn't funny, even if you thought it wasn't? Half the jokes I hear aren't funny, but I don't tell the person. I don't think most people do. Not in real life. Just my opinion, again.

Thank you.
Thank goodness for smiley thread immunity.
I hope your rough week looks up real soon. I hope you get to laugh.

You are right in that. I just thought it was harsh to say smilie users could be unintellegent. I didn't see any kind of connection whatsoever
I hope the rest of the week gets better for you!
