Default Stevie Nicks Atlantic City Review and Pictures

So, after saying I wasn't going to go, I called Kelly this morning and said, screw it. We're going. So, I left work at 4:30, made it home a little after 5:00 and by 5:45, was on the road with Kelly to the Borgata Event Center in Atlantic City--ticketless. For the first time in 13 SYW shows, 2 Stevie in Vegas and 2 Stevie with Don, Kelly and I were willing to settle for crap seats--we just really wanted to be there. Generally, she and I have excellent luck so I wasn't totally worried--and our luck prevailed once again.

We arrived shortly after 7:00 and headed to the box office. We were told the center section, row 5 was available but then the man behind the counter had a better idea...the section to the left of the center section had seats available on the aisle of the 5th row. We'll take them. So, tickets in hand, we check out the venue. No one checked for cameras or anything. They stamped my hand and Kelly and I went in to check out the venue. There honestly is not a bad seat in the house. It felt more like a convention hall as opposed to a venue but even 5th row aisle, we were on top of the stage. We asked one of the guards what time Vanessa would be on--8:00 and Stevie would take the stage at 8:45. We went to grab a bite to eat and then returned to find that the venue was slowly filling--all except the first three rows in front of our section.

At 8:00, Vanessa came on stage looking amazing. Even if you're not completely familiar with her music, if there's one thing you do on this tour, arrive early to hear her and watch her play. Not only is she hysterical but her voice was amazing and her playing was phenomenal. I'm really glad Stevie has her opening because I can't think of anyone better.

When her set was through, she left the stage to much applause and a standing ovation. She thanked Stevie's fans for being so gracious to her and with that, she left the stage. The house lights came back on, I looked at Kelly and we decided it was time to make our way up front. With the okay from the gaurd, Kelly and I went from 5th row to 2nd row aisle (and before Edge, to the stage). Turns out many of the comp ticket holders did not show up. However, they were not allowing people to sit in the front row (and those holders did end up showing up).

I will say that Stevie looked tired. In fact, someone asked me (I guess I look like a Stevie regular ) if she was sick. Even Stand Back was rather lackluster for her this evening but she still put on one hell of a show. Fall From Grace was fierce and her version of Circle Dance sans Don was incredibly heartfelt--you can just tell the song means a great deal to her--especially the ending "let you go..." as she trails off. There were many lyric additions I hadn't heard before including the end of Edge (Kelly will have to fill in the details). Rock and Roll (happy, Lux and Livia? ) was OUT OF THIS WORLD. Tonight was apparently the first night she came out with a TOPHAT ON!

Also, Vanessa Carlton changed into black and sang backing vocals with Sharon and Jana (complete with learned sasser movements) on the song which was awesome.

More photos to come...

Marissa, thanks for posting a review and pictures so quickly. I'm glad you got good tickets and I love seeing the pic of Stevie in her pants and top hat.

Great review. I love that picture of the top hat and pants. Finally, I can actually see the pants! I am concerned that you say she seemed tired and sick. Not to sound selfish, but the Florida shows are approaching and I don't want her to cancel! Do you think she was just under the weather and in a little funk or did it seem like she was coming down with something serious?

I knew you'd end up going . Great review and pictures, as always. Thank goodness you got the top hat... another potential pants crisis was narrowly averted! Vanessa singing backup is pretty cool. Did she have "pet the dog" down?

Diamond....vocally she sounded fine, great in fact. She looked tired. The high roller next to me asked me if she normally "looks like that". I asked him what he meant abd he said "does she normally perform with her eyes closed like that?" I think you can see what he is talking about in almost every photo taken of Stevie during this tour, even the ones in the newspaper, her eyes look extremely heavy...like she is just tired. I thought it was during the first half of the show this was most obvious...she definately got more energy and enthusiasm when she got to Sorcerer. She really got into this song with extensive hand motions to emphasize each word. She was sexy and confident throughout the entire song. She screamed the "misery" line. During OTR...she yelled, loudly..."I'M TIRED".
Ok..during Sorcerer, on the video screen, there is a fascinating drawing. It is a handdrawn sketch of a woman a beautiful woman, with long flowing hair. Well, on the back of this woman is a skeleton and it looks BIZARRE. This photo is up for the entire song. (sort of reminds me of the Mirage photos by LB) So...a woman who carries lots of skeletons on her back?
She was funny and charming before HAEWAFY. She stumbled over her words, trying to spit out some infor about One.org. She then said she was going to read it so we could all have the correct info. She proceeds to read a long fact sheet explaining the cause and urging people to go to the website. She really seems to want to make this point......for some reason. She then dedicates the song to all the "children who need your help".
So, what else. IMHO, Stevie really kicked Sorcerer, FFG and R and R out of this park. It was on those three songs that Stevie really came alive. She was adorable in the top hate and pants and for the first time genuinely smiled as she rocked out.
BATB and CD were as excellent and Stevie's vocals were committed. The end of CD was highly emotional and intense with the lines "its time to let you go" really resonating with Stevie. She looked extremely serious and committed to these lines.
Waddy was introduced in an interesting way. She started out by saying "Let me just say that I have known Waddy since 1971 and we are great friends. We knew him four years before FM".
Landslide..Stevie said we "probably all have heard this song." She proceeds to wave someone up from the front row and asks the girl her name. She dedicates Landslide "to Jen". Big audience sing a long and Jana continues to scream the harmonies and ruin the song for me. Plus, LB is highly missed and I swear Stevie does not know what to do with herself during the guitar solo and just turned around with her back to the audience, slightly rocking.
One more funny thing. Crazy, drunk audience man who was sitting near Liquid Blue was ejected from the show by Marcus. During HAEWAFY I saw Stevie checking out this guy who was yelling, crying, dancing and sticking out like a sore thumb. At the end of the song, she marched up to Waddy who was walking out and waved her arms around at him. Waddy then waved his arm at Marcus and walked over to him. Not a minute later Marcus was down in the audience, pulling said drunk man..with the help of venue security..out of the middle of his row. He was tossed. So Stevie meant business.
Overall a good show but better the second half. Stevie does look extremely tired and lacked the energy during the first half that she had at earlier shows. Stand Back was pretty half hearted, imho. When she took both my hands during Edge, I looked right at her too, so its not like my observations are from twenty rows back. She did perk up with Sorcerer and vocally she was incredible.

Oh and the venue was more like a big conference room, holding 3,700 people. Not sold out, unfortunately. Vanessa was quite enjoyable and I can see why Stevie digs her. I totally liked her opening set and found her to be an interesting young artist.

After reading back my last post I want to clarify something. When I described drunk man being ejected, I failed to point out that HAEWAFY is quite early in her set now. For those who do not realize this, I want to clarify...this guy was tossed EARLY on in her show. The set seemed to change a bit with Enchanted opening, SDMHA into OTR, Dreams, Rhiannon, Stand Back...not sure what was next, could have been Has Anyone or Sorcerer.

Also there was no ending to GDW other than the "shadows". There was a loud amp buzz and this might have thrown Stevie off but she did not do any "babybababyby you should see meo or save me now"s. This was another one of those songs that seemed rather lackluster compared to the kick ass versions with Don. Gasp...did I just say that? With Don?

Thanks for the review and pics, Marissa & Kelly. She needs to take care of herself and not push it too hard. We're going to see her DC show on the 10th and hopefully she'll be feeling better by then (not so much for the show, but I hate to think of her being exhausted and having to get up there).

PS...I just checked out her entire tour schedule and it makes me exhausted just to look at it.
