ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. -- A Georgia bride-to-be who vanished just days before her wedding has admitted that she lied about being abducted, police said Saturday.

Jennifer Wilbanks, 32, called her fiance from a pay phone late Friday in New Mexico and told him that she had been kidnapped, police said. She had vanished Tuesday.

"She was in discussion with detectives and agents and she decided that she needed to do the right thing and tell the right story," said Ray Schultz, the police chief in Albuquerque.

What a terrible thing to do to her fiance and to her family and friends. I hope she gets counselling first and then for her to pay back all the expenses to look for her while she was missing.

I just hope her fiance thinks twice before marrying this woman. I can't imagine this woman ever getting married or having children. She doesn't sound that stable.

Attention. If women can poison their own children to get attention, I'm not that surprised at this.

I feel sorry for her. She probably was overwhelmed by the whole situation and not ready to get married. It wouldn't surprise me if it came out she had some sort of acute mental illness. People get cold feet all the time but the least she could have done was call her family and let them know she was alright and would be back in a few days. I don't think any of us should be so quick to judge, not until we know all the facts. Even then, it's really none of our business.

Sorry, I think it's horrible that she did that. As much as I'm sure she didn't want to hurt her fiance, she did. He took a polygraph test. They were looking at him thinking that he may have been the cause of her dissapearance. What bothers me is authorities wasted time looking for a woman who didn't want to be found. Meanwhile, there really are missing people out there. I figured as much that she got cold feet. Still, there would have been better ways to go about doing this. She wasn't thinking. I feel sorry for the friends and family she made worry.

Well, we can blame yet something else on the media...thrusting this into everyones homes. Again, pretty girl...possible kidnapping before her wedding day The stuff TV is made of.

I hate how the husbands/partners of missing woman are now considered prime suspects. It is sad...

It is but I think over the years due to varying cases where relatives have been the culprit, it's forced investigators to look at home first and then filter out from there.

I think she may have a mental illness. She may have been in such a panic at the thought of getting married that the whole thing spiraled out of control. Also, she cut her hair. I feel bad for her. I am relieved for her family and her fiance' that she is alright.

Right. It's because of the statistics that show most women that are hurt/killed are assaulted by someone close to them.

Speaking from my personal experience of calling off my wedding only one week away from the "big day", I can say that the stress when presented with this kind of situation (i.e. you know that everyone in your world is in high gear and you are feeling increasing dread as the day approaches) is enormous. Until you are acutally faced with this kind of decision, you cannot imagine how it feels.

It really all comes down to what kind of family situation you were raised in and what kind of coping skills you have for this kind of stress. For me, I was always expected to do what everyone else wanted me to do, instead of being allowed to have my own independent feelings about the situation. My coping skill was avoidance - until I could not take it any more and my body started to physically shut down (i.e. panic attacks, etc.). So I stepped up and said that I couldn't go through with it. Of course, as predicted, everyone was horrified, but I have never felt such relief in my life as I did the day I called it off.

This experience made me take a step back and look at myself and figure out:

1. Why I agreed to marry this guy in the first place when I wasn't really in love with him
2. Why I didn't call it off sooner, and
3. Why I didn't feel I could share this problem with my family and people that care about me

Therapy helped me figure all these things out, and I have never regretted calling it off. Thank God I did, because I would be in a terrible marriage and would certainly have gotten divorced.

That being said, I cannot imagine faking my disappearance to avoid the wedding. I am sure she is just so devestated. Her family should look at themselves and try to find out why she felt that she needed to go to these kind of lengths, instead of just talking to them.

Just my 2 cents . . . from someone who has been there.

I called off my first wedding only 10 days before the event and, indeed, it is a stressful thing to do. However, I had the luxury of finding out he had been frequenting "massage parlors" so no one really questioned my decision. I imagine it must be much worse if you just have some sort of epiphany that you're in the wrong place. But one of the best bits of advice I got when I was trying to figure out whether or not I should call everything off was from a divorced woman (friend of a friend) who told me that there's no worse feeling than walking down the aisle certain that you are making a mistake. Too often people get wrapped up in "the wedding" and don't give nearly enough thought to "the marriage".

One of the things I realized is that when you're in a relationship with someone for a while, you can end up on this "relationship track" and you look at each other after a while and figure, " Hmmm, it's been a while now. I guess we should we get married." I wasn't particularly happy in that relationship, but because I wasn't particularly unhappy I went along.

But like Heather said, you don't fake your kidnapping! I bet this guy feels like he dodged a bullet too with this crazy chick is he almost married. HERE'S someone you can count on when things get tough! I'm sure the first thing he said is, "Why didn't you just say something!"

I, too, have never regretted my decision. But the funny thing is how things happened afterwards! Within days of the wedding date I started dating an old boyfriend. Within four months we were living together. A little over a year later I found out I was pregnant! We threw together a backyard wedding in 4 months and we've been married for almost 5 years.

I tell people I tried to do everything right and it all went to hell. But then I tried doing everything wrong and it's worked out much better for me!

Glad things worked out for you too!

I cannot imagine a worse scenario than walking down the aisle knowing it wasn't the right thing. I have had so many of my divorce clients tell me that they just knew that something was "off", but they went ahead anyway because it was what everyone else wanted. Terrible way to start a marriage, IMO!

It is so easy to get caught up in the planning . . . for me I was so busy planning my wedding, studying for the bar exam and starting my first legal job, that I didn't take the time to really and truly take a personal inventory of my feelings. Sad but true. Thankfully, I did make the right choice. I could never have said my vows and truly meant them with this guy.
