Exclamation An interesting story

New York Paramedics Share Experiences On Bombing Anniversary

9/11 Medics Hope To Share Lessons Learned, Encourage Children To Shun Violence

OKLAHOMA CITY -- In many ways, Oklahoma has shared the grief of the 1995 Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building bombing with the nation -- but the bond with New York runs especially deep.

Eyewitness News 5's Mark Opgrande talked to some New York paramedics who were in Oklahoma City on Sunday to renew friendships created through their shared experience. The paramedics said they remember the help they received during the tragic events of Sept. 11, 2001, and hope to give back some of what they received.

New York paramedics Frank Borello and Daniel Fink said they are forever grateful for the help they received on from Oklahomans during 9/11.

"I came today because at Ground Zero, there were a lot of people from Oklahoma who were there helping us, and I figured the least I can do ... I mean, they came to help us and maybe this is some small way we can help them," Fink said.

Along with fellow paramedic Robert Domingo, Fink and Borello came to Oklahoma City to participate in the bombing anniversary ceremony. Borello said he and his colleagues want to share what they learned during the days that followed the tragedy in Manhattan and how it relates to what happened a decade ago in Oklahoma City.

"We both share quite a history of catastrophe," Borello said. "It's unfortunate, but what we've both found -- what's so special -- is out of tragedy ... (it) builds bonds of friendship."

Domingo said all three paramedics will spend time in the community while they are in Oklahoma City. He said they are especially looking forward to speaking with schoolchildren.

"If you can keep the kids on the right track -- instead of hating and harm -- the world can become better," Domingo said. "But if you show them the wrong way, they are only going to go the wrong direction."

The numbers involved in both tragedies don't matter, Domingo added. He said the fact that at least one life was lost in either event is a sad commentary on the effects of violence.

"One life is too many," Domingo said. "It doesn't matter ... numbers. You had 168, we had almost 3,000. But my belief is one life is too many."

That was a horrible event. This is also the 99th anniversary of the '06 San Francisco Quake.

Hubby & I drove to the Grand Canyon in 2000 & made an unplanned detour to the OKC Bombing Memorial. It is one of the most stunning, beautiful, heartbreaking places I've ever been. If you get the chance to see it, do it.

Lightbulb Amen

I'm glad that my mom and I went to the memorial in March. It was moving in a subtle way. I was looking at some pictures on the wall, my mom goes "Awww...look at the kids.", I turned around to look at a picture and lost it. I was okay until that moment.

Everyone should go to see it.

That was the most painful and bazar day of my life. It took me over 8 hours to get home to Shawnee which is 30 miles east of OKC. I was at work in Edmond and we felt the blast. I cried for days. Me and my best friend drove thru OKC about 6 months after it happend and I swear you could feel the death. I was not right at all. It really messes with your head. The memorial is beautiful and if you ever have a chance to see it you should.

It's also the anniversary of my grandfather's drowning. He was slightly younger than me at the time so I never knew him.

That bombing was so awful, the poor children and their families, how could they get past that?
