Well, my dad came from a poor family so he is all about conserving everything. They were poor because my grandfather died when he was just 32 and left behind his wife and 5 kids. Dad was only 12.

My dad is in the process of insulating his house to conserve energy. He bought a new fridge that he didn't need because they told him it would conserve energy. Of course, he does these things not to save the planet, but to save a buck. But he does think of the planet too.

So he taught me to conserve and it stuck with me.

Oh yeah, and I am from a small town too. It's just now I live in the city. But I never felt like I belonged in that small town.

that's really good. That's the whole thing, it does save money.
yeah, small towns are boring. But now I like it, cause mine is really, really pretty. Still nothing to do, though.

Thumbs down

I have been reading and following this all day...and the worst part of all of this is 3 Democrats voted NAY, and had they not voted NAY it would have passed and the provision would have been taken OUT of the budget...The fact that there was bi-partisan support (to some extent) to take this amendment out of the budget and not allow it....which was NEEDED...6 republicans going against their party and voting with democrats, and Senator Landrieu (D) of LA and the 2 dem Senators from HI were all it would have taken..

I have personally met Landrieu, and she is quite a nice lady..although she has seriously made me a little mad..lol..Generally she is opposite of President Bush on every issue..I wouldnt even really consider her much of a moderate Democrat...with her strong opposition to the war in iraq, this social security proposals, anti choice judges..etc. So I'm kind of surprised at Sen. Landrieu, she told me PERSONALLY that she would in the Senate do ANYTHING she could do to put up some sort of resistance in this Congress...This was in October, and I think at that point everyone sort of new the Republicans would gain a sizable majority in Congress...She told me she would do whatever it takes...but for some reason on this issue she did a turn around...went against the party, most of her constituents, and hopefully ruined her chances of re-election.. Not only did this seem to be a big enough issue for 6 republicans to go away from their party and support, but this has been a hugely publicized issue and a heated one for voters--- I'm just surprised in her I guess..

I just want to know why the hell Olympia Snowe is a registered Republican. She's got a good head on her shoulders, you'd think she would distance herself from those fascist bastards.

Look at her campaign contributions and see if any of them were from oil companies.

Are you meaning to tell me that it's the will of the people that we drill in the ANWR? Because that's the duty of our elected officials, right? They are supposed to represent us and if we don't want oil companies drilling there then they shouldn't be drilling there.
It has nothing to do with candles or walking in the rain or flying to see Stevie. There is not one person here who would not use an alternative were it available. So save the jet lagged guilt trip.
You and I both know that type of technology has been surpressed, gonna keep being surpressed and we know by who.
With respect to the Middle East, I don't recall us ever voting on drilling there. We should have learned our lesson 30 years ago.

It is the will of the people to continue using fossil fuel with relatively little care or regard to its detrimental effects here or in the Middle East

Also, what I am saying is that although I think we ought to stop drilling for oil everywhere now and RUN to alt. fuel sources that require NO oil (thus precluding hybrid cars) - but as long as we (and I mean the world here) use oil, that oil in Alaska is coming out of the ground. Thus, I say do it now and get it over with. I mean that way we the world will be forced into alt. fuel sources.

I was thinking about this on the plane - every single thing we do revolves around oil. Oil is used to power the facilities that make just about everything (shampoo, clothes, paint, asphalt, etc.) Thus, while conserving a good thing and I applaud the people, including myself, who conserve, I still think no one realy does it to any relevant extreme. I mean who here does not use store bought soap, shampoo, etc. For people that smoke, many gallons of oil went into making that luxury (the manufacturing, the butane, the power to refine the wood for paper or wood matches, the packaging, the advertisements, the shipping, etc.). I submit that other than the obvious health reasons for quitting smoking, that if everyone stopped now, it would conserve more power than turning the lights off Yet, who has ever heard of anyone stopping smoking because it will protect the environment I have not other than some tangential second hand smoke issue. Thus, this proves my point which once again is people may conserve here and there and some like Suze WAY more than others, but few are willing to do without their luxuries for it. I include myself in this BTW.

Also, solar power is available - how many of us have solar panels on our roofs? How many have a windmill in the front yard? Those are available to some degree. Yet, people opt for the so called cheaper method which is the local power company. Again, while some certainly cannot afford it, many could take their monthly power or heating bills and apply that to a pmt on an alt. fuel system. But, I agree the development of alt. fuel has been suppressed - ny point is no one gives a flying you know what because the easy way is to use oil created power. I believe the expression is "If you buils a better mousetrap, the world will beat a path to your door" - it will happen, hopefully, one day.

Also and interestingly, a friend of mine is an engineer for GM. He told me that the oil companies were initially against the hybrid cars but now somewhat support them. The reasons for the change was the oil companies realize that they cannot drill forever and the conservation of oil will prolong the drilling of it for a very very long time.

I just think that most people don't understand the consequences of overusing oil. They don't believe it will run out, they just don't think. With Iraq, people are beginning to understand. But they're busy with their families and jobs, too busy to have the energy to deal with this issue. Our leaders have dropped the ball on this, not the little guys.

Read on DU this morning that she's voted against her party three times since March 9th -- in favor of cloture on the bankruptcy bill, in favor of the bankruptcy bill, and now drilling ANWR.

Here's her statement about the ANWR vote: http://landrieu.senate.gov/~landrieu...005316C23.html
