on a side note, many of the original Fairy Tales were much darker and more graphic, I believe it was the Brothers Grimm who sanitized them and softened them for mass consumption...I read something a long time ago by Tanith Lee that was more along the lines of the original Snow White or Rose Red (I forget which) but I wish that these original tales were more available, I'd like to read more of them
The Grimm's are the ones who made them so dark to begin with, but with each new edition, they lessened the sex and incest and instead intensified the violence. If you can get them from the library, get these books:

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg...books&n=507846
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg...=UTF8&v=glance

I'm a fairy tale buff, so I've read the original stories and they're darker than dark. Incest, rape, child abuse, serial killers; the works.

Ah, yes. The Brothers Grimm. They were fun in my literature classes.

I read the excerpt of the first book you listed above. Gorgeous. Macabre in the best way, I just HAVE to read these. Thanks for the tip, I have never heard of these.

And I love this, "...the stories collected in the nineteenth-century folktale anthologies ...had their origins in an irreverent peasant culture that arose in conscious opposition to the feudal state's ruling class. By overdoing it in the realm of storytelling, these narrators were able to alleviate--if only temporarily--some of the tedium that marked the daily life of their audience ... "

I like them, too, my mom had this giant book of original creepy fairy tales that were very different. Snow White and Rose Red sticks out in my mind the most, but they were all way better than the washed out fairy tales.

Did you watch Faerie Tale Theatre when you were a kid? I was HUGE with those things. I couldn't believe it when they released every episode on DVD last month. I snapped that sucker up faster than I'd snap Jake Weber up off my doorstep. I love all of them, they're truly great.

And I used to go to the Saturday matinees to see the Cannon Movie Tales with my grandma, too. My favorites were Hansel and Gretel with Cloris Leachman and Beauty and the Beast with Rebecca De Mornay!

I think I did not watch it, maybe a couple of times. Yeah, wasn't it real life people acting out fairy tales? If it's the one I'm thinking of. Yeah, I just looked it up, that's the one. I didn't really like kids shows with real life actors, or muppets, either, when i was a kid. I liked cartoons only, or, just regular adult shows. I actually would probably enjoy it more now. Have you watched them? Are they good to you as an adult? Oh, by the way, I have $3213 in my pocket, so I think i'm finally gonna rent some movies this weekend. I will get Wendigo, for sure -

Oh, I've watched them over and over and over and over, they're just fabulous. The budgets were very low, but the stars attached to them was jaw dropping. Shelley Duvall, Robin Williams, Susan Sarandon, Billy Crystal, Ellen Barkin, Lesley Ann Warren, Christopher Walken, Klaus Kinski, Anjelica Huston; the list goes on. And a lot of the humor was very adult, I dig it. When it comes to fairy tales, I don't think anything beats that show. Shelley Duvall produced it and you can just tell that a lot of love went into making it a fantastic show.

I never tire of talking about that bloody movie because I pick up something new every time I watch it. It's brilliant and one of my favorites. Don't pay attention to the box, though, it's misleading and makes you think you're gonna watch a scary gore flick.

Yeah, I remember that show had some good stars. Maybe i was a bit older when it came out, actually. I don't see the dates anywhere. But however old you were, I was 6 years older than that, so.
Don't worry about me paying attention to the box of Wendigo, I will get it no matter what. But - what is the plot like? Wait, I can just go look it up I realized.

It's actually hard to describe and I don't want to give anything away. It's not much of a horror movie, though, I've no idea why they marketed it as one.

But even if it sucked, it's worth getting just so you can see his ass.

ok. I'm looking forward to a good sex scene, so there better be one!
Here's what I know so far:
"

Plot Summary for
Wendigo (2001)
George is a high-strung professional photographer who is starting to unravel from the stress of his work with a Manhattan advertising agency. Needing some time away from the city, Jake, his wife Kim, and their son Miles head to upstate New York to take in the winter sights, though the drive up is hardly relaxing for any of them. George accidentally hits and severely injures a deer that ran onto the icy road; after George stops to inspect the damage, he's confronted by an angry local named Otis who flies into a rage, telling George that he and his fellow hunters had been tracking the deer for some time. An argument breaks out, which leaves George feeling deeply shaken. When George and Kim arrive at their cabin, they discover that it's next door to Otis' property, and they soon find that a dark and intimidating presence seems to have taken over the cottage. Since, when they stopped at a store en route to the cabin, a shopkeeper told Miles about the legend of the Wendigo, a beast from Indian folklore who is half-man, half-deer, and can change itself at will, the child begins to wonder if the creature might have something to do with his family's sudden misfortune."

That's not too bad, but don't read any more!

I've been trying to track down the European DVD because it has an alternate ending, but I haven't had any luck. It's driving me bonkers, I tell you!

I won't. I went to the Wendigo website, where it has the choice of the movie or the animated series and saw that the movie got a bunch of good reviews. I'm stoked, and there isn't sh** on tonight.

I went to the video store this morning and rented a bunch of movies for the weekend because it's going to snow. I got...

Angel Heart
Cat People (original)
The Lair of the White Worm
Mute Witness
Robocop
The Joy Luck Club

Eclectic, eh?

yeah, kinda. That's a good selection. I haven't really seen Robocop or Joy Luck Club (i may have seen JLC, my friend was trying to make me watch it forever - Is Ming Na Wen in it? ) But I've seen the others. Lair of the White worm cracked me up! Anyways, I was thinking of picking up Angel Heart, too - but I'm not sure i'll have time to watch it, you know the Oscars are on Sunday! Oh, wait, I haven't seen mute witness, either. Oh, it's a horror movie! Well, you should have a fun weekend, my friend. I have this weird urge to watch an anime film, too. But they're hard to pick out if you don't know a bunch about them. Actually, I really, really, really wish there were more Aeon Fluxes. I don't know why, but I really love Aeon Flux. Anyway, gotta go.
