Louise Post rode the rock'n'roll highs, then fell silent. But the colourful voice of Veruca Salt is back doing what she loves best - making music, writes Craig Mathieson.

Louise Post is lying on her bed, smoking a cigarette. It's her 39th birthday and it's turning out to be a pink one.

She can see the pink and white roses her boyfriend gave her earlier in the day and she's just returned to her Los Angeles home after fighting the cross-town traffic to pick up a new guitar, which came with pink inlays on the fretboard, a pink strap and even a pink case.

"My guitar tech is this metalhead with dreadlocks, and when he rocks out playing my pink Flying V guitars it looks very sexy," says Veruca Salt's frontwoman with a throaty laugh.

"More guys should play pink guitars."

Since she last brought her band to Australia for a national tour in July 2003, Post has maintained a low profile. She has spent much of the past 18 months trying to decide whether she still wants to pursue a career in music, having struggled with the public's perception that Veruca Salt wasn't the same band since the acrimonious departure in 1998 of Post's former best friend and fellow songwriter on the first two Veruca Salt albums, Nina Gordon.

There were also disagreements with the label, Beyond, that put out the subsequent Post-penned third Veruca Salt album, 2000's Resolver.

"I was really sick of the music industry out here in Los Angeles," explains Post. "I had to remind myself why I do what I do, and my research showed that music is built into me."

Post jokes that she's not trying to use the word California in any of her songs, but nonetheless she's embraced some of that state's more soothing spiritual endeavours - including yoga, meditation and hiking - over the past year.

Given her oft-stated predilection for loud guitars, the rock'n'roll lifestyle and a friendship with Courtney Love, it's had an appreciable effect.

"I reconnected with my surroundings and the people in my life," Post says with the sincerity of a convert. "I did some healing of relationships that had gone awry."

Over the past few months, Post has officially extricated Veruca Salt from Beyond and engaged new management. She's written and demo'd most of the next Veruca Salt album, which she plans to record in February and release in mid-2005 through one of the labels she's now in talks with.

"I'm excited about growing as an artist," she notes. "The next record will have a different tone because a lot of time has passed since I made Resolver. I think I may actually be finally growing up."

Australia will be a good place to test her assertion. "I tend to go a little crazy down there," Post admits.

It was at the Prince of Wales Hotel in St Kilda, on Veruca Salt's first Australian tour in 1997, that Post announced onstage that her boyfriend, Dave Grohl, of The Foo Fighters, had just left her for actress Winona Ryder.

After a fractious, combative show, a visibly drunk Post was reportedly carried off the stage.

"I got very familiar with the toilet backstage at the Prince of Wales," concedes Post, who views her past indiscretions with an easy tolerance. "I hold the record for inebriation in my life from that show."

That night proved to be a full stop of sorts in several ways. As well as offering a dash of pop culture shorthand - former-Nirvana-member-leaves-fellow-musician-for-famous-actress - on the burnout of alternative rock, it marked the beginning of the end for the original Veruca Salt.

Post, who was born in St Louis and studied English in New York before moving to Chicago to wait tables and act with an avant-garde theatre troupe, formed the group with Gordon, a budding art historian, in 1992.

After doing little but rehearse for 18 months, the founding quartet were an instant sensation once they survived their first gig, supporting a band that played Fleetwood Mac's Rumours in its entirety.

Heralded by the pop smarts and catchy riff of the single Seether, Veruca Salt's debut album, American Thighs, was an arresting mix of social commentary, obsessive confessions and guitar thrills: Naomi Wolf's The Beauty Myth rewritten with great harmonies.

MTV airplay for Seether saw the band swiftly moving from their independent label, Minty Fresh, to Geffen Records and hiring Q-Prime, renowned for their association with Metallica and Def Leppard, as managers.

Their second album, Eight Arms To Hold You, was produced by Metallica's studio cohort, the appropriately named Bob Rock.

It was a broader, tougher disc, made in part with expectations of being played live to large amounts of people. But a stylistic divide between Post, who favoured a harder sound, and the more pop-orientated Gordon, became insurmountable and, after their issues together took on a personal tone, the latter departed soon after the ill-fated Prince of Wales gig.

Gordon's departure was marked by no small measure of rancour on Post's behalf. Much of Resolver is an extended kiss-off to Gordon (who turned the other cheek on her subsequent solo album, Tonight and the Rest of My Life).

A sampling of the titles captures the disdain: Officially Dead, Used To Know Her, Disconnected ...

For Post, that time has passed now. She's intent on renewal, not regret.

"I've gone through a lot of changes personally," Post says. "Writing songs right now is awesome. I feel fulfilled, as opposed to having all this rage that I have to get out as a form of therapy."

She pauses, listening to her own words, weighing them up. "We'll see," adds Post, grasping for the bravado that used to come easily. "I'm still a crazy bitch."

She doesn't sound very convincing, which might just be for the best.

Veruca Salt play at the Falls Festival on New Year's Eve (sold out) and at the Corner Hotel, Richmond, on January 9.

It will be interesting to see how the new VS projects goes.

And yes, you are right...she DOES look like Stevie from that 77 photo shoot where her hands are clasped...
