What are some of your favorite non-lyrical compositions?
Wings of the Wind - Michael W. Smith (on his debut album, it's just a fun, interesting, early 80's instrumental) Ashton - Michael W. Smith (My fave Smitty instrumental...it's spectacular!) Sunny Side of Heaven (Couldn't leave FM out of this..hehe. Danny rules! Albatross (Beautiful.) Wish Lindsey would do more instrumentals...and a friggin soundtrack!!!!

I love the soundtrack to "The last of the Mohicans" LOVE IT!!!! that's all i can think of now, although i do like Lindsey's NGBA instrumental on the reissue, and it's amazingly...something...when heard through headphones.

perhaps my all time fav has got to be "Green onions" by Booker T and the MG's..anyone remember that one?
FM related..there's one on the Tusk re-release, thats cool, actually any of them really (I know most of them are just backing tracks before lyrics added, right?..not instrumentals as such)

This Nearly Was Mine by Lindsey Buckingham.. Very emotive version of the Rodgers/Hammerstein song.
Barbers Adagio For Strings... Again very powerful yet understated piece.. Intermezzo sinfonico from Cavalleria Rusticana.. Brilliant and moving, nothing can compare to it IMHO.. ![]() |

The two that come into my mind are "Sunny Side of Heaven" and the instrumental versions of "Never Going Back Again" on the Rumours re-issue.

"Albatross"
"Caught In The Rain" (yes, I like it a lot) "Stephanie" The little snippet at the end of "Slow Dancing" Then the non-FM ones: The Beach Boys: "Let's Go Away For A While", "Pet Sounds" Frank Zappa: "Aybe Sea" King Crimson: "Larks' Tongues In Aspic, Parts 1&2), "Talking Drum", "Red", "The Sheltering Sky"... (they have a plenty) Genesis: "After The Ordeal" Nick Drake: "Horn" The Pixies: "Cecilia Ann" (haven't heard the Surftones' original) Link Wray: "Rumble" (of course) Dick Dale: "Misirlou" (immortalized in Pulp Fiction) Joy Division: "Incubation" New Order: "Let's Go" (before they added vocals to it) Uh, memory loss has struck now, it seems.

Not a huge fan of instrumentals really - because I like to sing along to things.....so none really come to mind...
Though I did like Paul McCartney's Working Classical and Standing Stones...two great instrumental albums that I love....very relaxing... |
