Tough line to tow, but much of it is common sense. You wouldn't want to sing "Otto Titsling" at a dinner with the Queen Mum. Unless, of course, the old broad was really crocked and sitting next to Dame Edna.

I tend to just speak my mind, even though my Momma taught me manners and I know when I can and cannot be comfortable being my potty mouthed self.
For a while, after college p.c. indoctrination, I was very self editing. Those days are so over. F that ! People's open wounds are their own unfinished business. If someone hasn't the smarts to tell a joke from a slur, there are therapists littering the countryside.

For me, it's just a matter of knowing when something is proper and when it isn't.

It's nothing to do with people, it's to do with those two terms contradicting each other. Vulgarity tempered by propriety? Yup, an oxymoron.

It's common sense when it comes to telling jokes and being humorous, IMO. I wouldn't tell one of my vile jokes to the pharmacist as I'm getting my prescription filled, nor would I tell nasty Dick and Jane jokes at a funeral. I wouldn't go to the proctologist's office and tell a penis joke. I've got a filthy sense of humour and could put a sailor to shame with my mouth, but common sense dictates when to put both to use. Everyone has it, some just learn it sooner than later.

I'd go the extra mile and snap the Queen Mum's boulder holder just as I'm finishing the song at a frenetic pace and asking "Do you buy a titsling or do you buy a brazziere?"

I believe in speaking your mind, but I also believe there's a way to do it and a way not to do it.
I guess even when I'm "telling it like it is," I prefer to be tactful and considerate.

And not that you're saying this is the case, but I don't view being considerate of others as being untrue to yourself. If I can't be funny without being hurtful, then something's wrong.
I've never understood those who feel something's only funny if you've managed to upset someone... just seems to me like they lack to ability to be genuinely funny, and instead have to settle for appealing to the lowest common denominator.

(I get my best laughs out of making fun of myself... which always means I have an endless amount of material and no one gets hurt! )

Well, of course it is!
But we're all walking oxymorons (though some are just morons)... and that was the point I was making.

Case in point... you have a vulgar sense of humour, but refrain from being vulgar around certain people.
You have the ability to be vulgar, but the wherewithal to know when it's improper... so the vulgarity is therefore tempered by propriety.

Yes, the phrase itself, on paper, is an oxymoron... but it's still fitting of the behaviour.

Johnny Stew, I bet you're damn cute, arent you!!! I just rented "Get Real" and "Latter Days" this weekend and now I'm feeling a wee bit lonely, so to speak...

Oh well, back to the discussion at hand...

PS You should also put a picture of yourself on your website!

Oh my!

Well, I don't think I'm ugly, but I don't know about "damn cute."
Hopefully my looks have never caused anyone to feel naseous though!

Maybe I'll post a pic one of these days... a few Ledgies have already seen my mug, and lived to tell the tale, so I guess it would be ok.

('Get Real' was a great movie, though definitely bittersweet. I haven't gotten around to seeing 'Latter Days' yet. 'Beautiful Thing' remains my favorite "gay-themed" movie... but, boy, that one will sure make you feel wistful!)

Like, gag me with a spoon. I hate those indie gay flicks that make you feel subhuman if you can't find a boyfriend. *ACK*

Wink

Oh, come on...It was snowing, it was cold, and those movies were perfect for when you just want to curl up on the couch with a blanket and cry...

Good grief! It's the only gay thing I like to do...cut me some slack!!!!

And Johnny Stew...
How old are you? You have to show everyone your mug again....and...Latter Dyas is cool, you'll like it. "Beautiful Thing" was ok, but to be honest (and somewhat of an ass) those two guys were really fugly! Sorry!

(Please don't let that last comment dissuade you from emailing me your pic!)

And I know this topic is a little off the mark, but the title of the thread is "Stevie $ Bette" so I think it's rather justified!

Umm...that would be the ENTIRE CULTURE making people feel subhuman if they are not mated off. And we wonder why the divorce rate is through the roof. People get married to avoid being alone...and do it way before they are developed, dependable, self reliant human beings with something more to offer than a warm body and an unformed psyche.
If one cannot stand alone and be happy, confident, and content, they are in no way suited to pair up and offer another anything other than heartache.
God Bless America, right ?

As opposed to the mainstream gay flicks?

I know what you mean though... movies, commercials, television shows, greeting cards, everything seems designed to make those of us who are not coupled feel as if we're somehow defective.

I have to say though, and I hope I'm not ruining the ending for anyone by posting this, but the "hero" in 'Get Real' does not keep his man. Instead, he gains personal insight, and the audience is left with the impression that his future relationships will have a more stable foundation than his first. And, even more importantly, that he's going to be all right even if he doesn't find a mate.
