Default Stevie changing lyrics live

Thinking (again) about lyrics. I'm wondering if anyone else thinks that Stevie changes her live lyrics in relation to what's going on in her life at the time.

Example: Outside the Rain:

Initially, "it's one more link in the chain, I don't believe that" I take it as her telling everyone that she CAN be a successful solo artist, without Mac. She's not JUST part of the chain (the Mac).

Mid 80's, live, "well, Mick says 'Stevie this is just one more link in the chain', and I say, 'I have to/do believe that/him/it'" Was this her telling everyone that she'd never break the chain? That she HAS TO believe that she'll always be a part of Mac?

Other shows (later ones, if I recall, like late 80's/early 90's) she sometimes went back to "I can't/don't believe that/him." There was a lot of turmoil in the band at this time, was this a purposeful change in the lyric?

Another obvious one would be "take your silver springs & dig your grave" on the BTM Tour (was that line done in Manchester only?)

Any thoughts?
Paula

Great post, Paula. I think that sometimes these ad-libs or changes are related to something in particular, but I've always had the feeling that a lot of the time, Stevie's just emoting loosely at the microphone, & whatever comes out might carry through for the next several shows, the whole tour, or even through several tours.

Apparently, she sang that a bunch of times that year. Somebody once said it was related to the fight with Mick, but that fight didn't start until the following year.

The first to come to my mind was Silver Springs "Still I am a fool."

Wouldn't she have said "take my Silver Springs & dig your grave"? I know it's a FM song but she did write it. She was pretty mad about it being dropped from the album or would that have been too harsh? Or did she just screw up her lines?

Maybe she meant he was treating the song like it didn't belong to her.

How about:

"singin' it to ya!" on Red Rocks or the "sister, brother, sister, brother, etc. of the MOOOOOOOOOOOOOON!! (accompanied by the freak out gibberish)" on the Mirage tape? I like the last change up but the "singin' it to ya" is a little much. I much prefer the "yeah yeah's" inserted into the Belladonna tour EO17: "ooh baby, ooh, said yeah, yeah" and then the kick! Awesome!!

I also like the Storytellers EO17 when she sings/talks, "and the sea does not change, it does not change it doesn't etc"....and also "I know what it sounds like, I know what it sounds liiiiiiiiiiiiike."

Or how about the Stand Back change up? "One man, he did not fall, but he asked me for too much, I said take meeeeeeeee!" That's also a great one.

And Jake, I love "still I am a fool" too!!

On the TISL tour, after 9/11, on GDW didn't she sing "well it's a heartless challenge, you pick your path and then you pay" directed towards Osama bin laden?

I love the versions (like the one on The Chain boxed set)when she sings "he asked me for too much, I said well, TAKE IT ALL!"

Her love? Her money? Her songs? Take all of what? And is "he" Kim or Mick or LB or someone else?

Ahhh, yes. That's a good one. I think she means take all of the above. You know she's always said that she could never keep a man in her life because she wasn't willing to put him first and give up her career/lifestyle so I think she's saying, fine, take it all and see how it kills me, my life is so tragic, yaddah, yaddah, yaddah...I think it's Stevie being fed up with the difficulty of maintaining romantic relationships.

I thought about that, but then I thought she said "your" deliberately and in a mean way. Sort of like take my beautiful song that is mine, but you are hatefully calling YOUR'S - and dig your grave with it because I am outta here bozo.

Who could forget the ad-libbed HAEWAFY intro - "If you f*ck with my people, I'm gonna get really f*ckin' angry!"
