Rumours-era filler?

In the interview clips with Christine posted on her Web site, she talks about how some FM albums had "padding." Which Rumours-era FM songs do you think she considers filler?

Any song that was released as a single, I think, would have to be disqualified.

Here are my opinions:

I don't think Rumours or Tusk have any filler.

Fleetwood Mac: "Sugar Daddy," an inferior knock-off of "Say You Love Me" (though I like both tunes).

Mirage: Quite a bit of filler. "That's Alright," "Empire State," "Only Over You," "Wish You Were Here," and even "Straight Back" are all rather mediocre tunes (though some have grown on me over the years). And I've always despised "Oh Diane," although that was a single so I guess someone inexplicably thought it was good.

Tango: Definites are "Caroline," "Mystified," "Welcome to the Room...Sara," "You and I Pt. 2," and two others are arguable: "Tango in the Night" and "When I See You Again."

What do others think?

I got the impression she was speaking of her own songs as FM as the filler. I'd say most of her padding was on Tusk and Mirage. (Never Make Me Cry, Only Over You, Wish You Were Here.) As a whole, Mirage has the highest pecentage of filler overall.

I'll agree with "Sugar Daddy," " EMpire State," "Only Over You," "Mystified," and a few others you mentioned, but I could never agree with "That's Alright," "Straight Back," and I absolutely LOVE "TITN!!!"

Honey Hi, Only Over You, Wish You Were Here, Never Forget ... filler alert, even though I like two of those.

I like them all except Only Over You......but they are indeed padding.

I really don't think there's any filler on the White Album, Rumours & Tusk. Those albums are classics. Mirage has quite a bit of filler, in my opinion. Pretty much most of Lindsey's songs on that album are pretty inferior. I would say that Tango has some, too-a few of Lindsey's songs & pretty much all of Stevie's songs.

I'm not sure if Christine was just referring to her songs or all of the band's songs on those albums.

I know I am leaving the common ground here but I do think that Rumours has plenty of fillers. There are huge hits on it also for sure but it's by far not my FM fav album.

White album filler: Sugar Daddy

Rumours filler: Oh Daddy & I Don't Wanna Know.

Tusk filler: mmm...none?

Mirage filler: all of it except Eyes of the World, Gypsy, Hold Me, and Oh Diane

Tango In the Night filler: Everything except Everywhere, Big Love, Little Lies, Isn't it Midnight, Tango in the Night, and Seven Wonders.

That doesnt mean I dont "like" all those tunes either...

White Album: Sugar Daddy

Rumours: Nothing...

Tusk: Nothing...even though I don't care for a lot of her stuff on this album, I don't qualify it as filler.

Mirage: Empire State and Wish You Were Here

Tango: ALL of Stevie's stuff, they should've stayed with the Buckingham McVie theme.

BTM: Nothing, this was her album, IMO.

Time: She was great on this one, Night In Estoril is a classic, IMO.

Hmm... filler, hey?

The white album... gasp... "Blue Letter." Though I like the song, nothing fits that definition better. I would add "Crystal" and "Sugar Daddy." Mind you, I like those songs as well, but they strike me as the weakest. And "Crystal," let's face it, they were running out of songs to stick in there so they grabbed for something that was already released.

Rumours: "I Don't Wanna Know." Its very presence there is the true definition of filler, considering they had a certain amount of time to "fill." "Oh Daddy" is the other one. Double ugh.

Tusk: "Brown Eyes," Never Make Me Cry" and "Beautiful Child." Not bad for a 20-track album.

Mirage: "I Wish You Were Here," "Only Over You" and "Straight Back." I'll throw in "Empire State" because, even though I like it, this song is very clearly an attempt by Lindsey to toughen up the album a bit. Unfortunately, he tries to toughen it up with xylophones! Hellooo!

Tango: "Welcome to the Room... Sara," "When I See You Again," and "You and I, Part II." I find very little wrong with this album, except for Stevie's two clunkers. I even like "You and I, Part II," but believe strongly that Part I should have been in the album. A lot of people knock "Mystified." Why? It's a great tune. Also, someone suggested "Tango in the Night" is filler!?? Hellooo, it's the title track!

I agree with most of the picks as filler so far, but not Oh Daddy. It took awhile to grow on me, but now I think it's one of her best songs.

Well... in all actuality, Christine was saying that some of her songs were what she'd consider to be filler. She wasn't commenting on Lindsey & Stevie's material.

And like I said in another thread... looking over her contributions to Mac albums over the years, I wouldn't consider any of Christine's songs to be mere "filler."
In fact, I don't consider any of Lindsey & Stevie's songs to be "filler" either, even if they don't all happen to be favorite tracks of mine.

To me, "filler" is when you have 1-3 songs that are obviously going to be hit material, and then you fill the rest of the album with just anything, in order to put it out on the market (think most Top 40 acts).

Given the sheer amount of time it takes this band (or even the solo members) to record an album, I doubt they're taking that much time and care just to pad it.

Johnny, you make a good point. Rumours-lineup Fleetwood Mac albums are not what I would call albums with a lot of filler. And that's the advantage of having three songwriters, two of whom were quite prolific.

IDWTK my only filler song. But although I LOVE it and thinkt hat this is the best version of the song, Crustal is clearly filler on the white album, it was an already recorded song they just stuck in there. Although it was clearly made MCUH better.
