Uh-umm... (clearing my throat)
I am new to politics, but is something I have wanted to learn about for a while. What better time then now... I am not educated enough to make intelligent, informed decision. ..... however, I am leaning slightly to the left............... Maria

Republicans: no abortion no gun control lower taxes to stimulate economic growth states rights as opposed to a larger Federal govt. no gay rights whatsoever Democrats: abortion gun control higher taxes a larger Federal govt. and less individual state autonomy possible civil unions and/or domestic partner benefits for gay people (this is not unanimous) These are just general ideas, but are an indication nonetheless. Also, few if any politicians are truly one or the other based on the main issues. For example, most politicians agree on the middle ground that the right to own a gun is in the Const., but there must be safeguards such as age limit for owning a handgun, permits, etc. Interstingly, there are "spun issues" such as religion. The far religious right (which is not all Christians by any means) frames the issue this way - "The liberals are taking God out of the public squares, are driving us away from God, and are telling us we cannot believe in or worship God" a la the recent removal of the 2 ton granite 10 Commandments monument in the rotunda of the Supreme Court of Alabama. The truth of the matter is no one ever said you cannot believe in the Ten Commandments or God. They just recognized that an activist judge (they exist on both sides) put it there about three years ago in the middle of the night and said "this is the law." The Federal Courts, rightly so in my opinion, found essentially that because the Commandments say "I am the Lord thy God - thou shall have other Gods" and the that only two of the Ten Commandments are actually against the law (stealing and killing), the Chief Judge's clandestine placement of the monument in the Al Sup. Ct. buuilding and then calling it the law violated the 1st Amendment's prohibition of the govt. from establishing an official state religion. So, how the issue is framed is everything - do not be fooled by it. To be fair and balanced, the far left liberals want the right for any woman to have a fetus aborted at will with no state control over the procedure except perhaps for safety. They frame things like "parental consent" or the less restrictive "parental notification" as the death knell for the right to choose to have an abortion. They claim that if the notification measures pass, that will begin the chipping away at the right to choose. In reality, most parents have indicated they at least want to know whether their minor child is undergoing a medical prodedure and they certainly would be required to know if the child was having an appendectomy. So, IMO it is all about the framing of the issues. Don't be fooled by them before you take your stance. I hope that helped!!!!! ![]() P.S. the other thing is that for the last 20 or so years, the party not in power does everything it can to mudsling the party in power. A good example of this is the Clinton witch hunt. After like five years of not being able to prove anything wrong with Whitewater and all of the unrelated subsequent investigations stemming from that initial investigation, they finally got Clinton for lying about having sex with an intern. While lying under oath is the crime of obstruction of justice, many felt and history demonstrates that this is not what the Const. framers had in mind when they allowed for impeachment of a President for "high crimes and misdemeanors." Yet, the far right controlled the House and that is what happened. Similarly and IMO, the far left now belittles every single thing W does. A good example IMO is comparing W to Hitler when although there may be vague comparisons in other areas, W can in no way be compared to Hitler because W is not trying to conquer the world and make us the only race while extinguishing millions of people not in that race as Hitler did. Also, while I am no fan of W, he has done some good things IMO like the tax cuts (which are working according to almost every economic indicator) and the new medical bill (I know I know - its not perfect, but it is better than what we had before and both parties passed it ).Last edited by strandinthewind; 01-21-2004 at 10:17 PM.. |
