They had issues dating back to the early Traffic days. Winwood, Capaldi, and Wood were more into psychedelic stoner jam rock and Dave was more poppy and wrote his songs independently of the others. It was Steve’s band, but Dave had the big hit with “Hole In My Shoe,” and that fractured their relationship more than anything. Dave left.

He came back for their second album because they were low on songs and he had about 5-6 ready to go, including “Feeling Alright.” Steve didn’t like Dave’s songs and Dave left again.

They’ve worked together sporadically, but they’re just very different men.

Also, Dave isn’t exactly Mr. Personality.

“Mason, Glaub added, was never into hanging out. He almost always traveled separately from the guys in his band. "He's a very aloof guy, basically. Not a real people person, which is unusual for what he does. He didn't really connect with a lot of the people he was working with, he just worked with 'em. And then he'd have other people that he traveled with, just to hang out with. We called them 'rental buddies' at the time."

So reading Waddy's interview, just posted in Stevie's forum, I found an excuse to resurrect this thread, cause my question is about a Mac song, so it deserves to be asked here.

Does anybody know the story about how Waddy ended playing rhythm guitar in Sugar Daddy? I know he already knew L&S, but why they asked him to play in this song?

I thought Stevie was Christine and Christine was Stevie. I should have known it was Christine next to Lindsey in that painting because she had a drink in her hand.

I hated that painting then and i still hate it now! They all look like extras in the movie 'Carrie' lol

I have not listened to that interview yet but Waddy spent lots of time in the studio working on the White Album. In another interview from many years ago he said it was so cool because he spent months working with the band and a few months later he was in his car and Over My Head came on. He said he was so freaked out because he knew the song from working with the band in the studio. He was a session guitarist. He was there working and hanging out with Stevie and Lindsey for some of the process recording the album. But it is a good question. Remember that much of the White Album was songs from Buckingham Nicks or left over songs/demos from working together. Waddy knew all of their songs. I can see why Lindsey and Stevie brought him along.
Waddy would make a fascinating interview because he was worked with everybody. I love the story he tells that he had no clue Stevie gave permission for Destiny's Child to use Edge of 17. He was at a hotel and his manager or someone told him that Destiny's Child wanted to meet him. His expression was "Why would Destiny's Child want to meet me?" That is when he found out they were using his guitar riff.

Who knows. But the way he described his working on the album with Stevie and Lindsey it sounded more than just bringing him in for a studio musician for one song. He knew all the songs on the White Album. Correct, he is only credited with one song. But he is still allowed to hang out a bit, play on some other songs even though his playing is nowhere else. I'll look for the interview.
Would he really have been needed on Sugar Daddy? Probably not. Maybe they threw him a bone on a song they knew would not be a single.

I did recognize Stevie immediately, but at first I thought it was a photo of clay figures

And yes it looks like extras of the Carrie movie party.

Lindsey looks more anger than in Tango photos. Looking at this photo at the time, one might assume that it would be his last album with the band.

the relationship between Lindsey and Waddy is one that we've never heard much about. I know when Stevie a few years back mentioned that they could re-release BN and do some shows with Waddy Lindsey's response was a very cool, classic Lindsey sarcasm...."oh...hmmmm... with Waddy Wachtel...."

But I've since read an article somewhere in which Lindsey says he learned a lot about how to deconstruct songs and all that from Waddy.

They were all very close. Waddy worked on Buckingham Nicks and they were already writing songs for a possible Buckingham Nicks 2. My guess is when Stevie's solo career took off with Waddy their relationships may have fizzled out. Stevie is a huge solo star with a #1 album on both of them on HBO. Waddy's guitar riff leading the way. No doubt it irked Lindsey. They were both making it really huge without him. It would have hurt anyone.
