in my quick search to find the Petty comments I found this one again and found it amusing to remember that Tom NEVER asked Stevie to join the Heartbreakers even though she pretty much stalked him and inserted herself into his life (and took, per Tom, a huge heaping of insults and abuse from him and his band to get what she wanted.....she'll do what it takes to get a man to help her out it seems) however he did actually ask Lindsey to join...

https://faroutmagazine.co.uk/tom-pet...heartbreakers/

The late singer-songwriter remembered: “Oh, she wouldn’t quit. Stevie showed up at my house every night for a year – maybe more. There’s no girls in the Heartbreakers”.

However, Petty said Nicks persisted in asking the question “every ****ing night”.

He added: “‘Stevie’s in room so-and-so.’ ‘Stevie wants a song.’ We gave her a hard ****ing time: ‘No way you’re coming to a session. Look at the ****ing clothes you’ve got on.’ The fact that she stuck around was amazing.”

Speaking to Men’s Journal, Petty recalled: “I do remember trying to talk Lindsey into joining the band that night. Stevie [Nicks] wasn’t playing with them at the time, so I said, ‘Why don’t you just join our band and get the heat off of me?’ I never wanted to be the front guy – I got that job and I’ve been stuck with it ever since.”

Tom confirmed what I've always thought. She's annoying AF.

And Prince's, "keep that crazy bitch away from me" line.

Funny that they both OD'd and died on drugs.

I tell ya, mama, she's a real PR machine!

I don't find any sense in this. Tom asked Lindsey to join the Heartbreakers because he didn't want to be the front guy of a band called Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers? Would they change the band's name? Did this happen when Fleetwood Mac was already famous and Tom thought Lindsey would leave that band? Or was it in 1996 when Lindsey collaborated on Heartbreakers' song "Walls", but also when the seed of The Dance was beginning to germinate?

Or did he just asked Lindsey for one night session, for a jam or something like that?

I don't know, I wasn't there. All we have to go on is Tom's telling of it. The article says it was during a time when Stevie wasn't with FM, (she was off doing solo stuff??) What year?

Tom did have Lindsey come in and play on the song "Walls" for a soundtrack that he did for a friend's film (1996). He was friendly enough with Lindsey to appear in LB's Behind the Music, which would have been like the late 80s or very early 90s.

So there appears to be a history of interactions between Tom and Lindsey over some number of years.

other than that you'd have to ask someone involved. Unfortunately you can't ask Tom what he was thinking because he's gone, so...mystery.

thanks for that link!

Stan Lynch talks about trying to work with Stevie and turn one of her demos into a properly produced song (Outside the Rain) and coming away with a deep appreciation of what Lindsey was able to hear and bring out from her basic demos:

We went in and did a session for Stevie. We learned "Outside the Rain" there and we rehearsed it. Something about that record, I’m trying too hard. I remember thinking about it at the time, going: "Why am I trying so hard?" I realized what it was. I think when I left I went, “My God, Lindsey Buckingham is an amazing producer.” We cut another song that day too and it didn’t make it. [But] I heard that song on the record, a song that he had produced that we had tried to cut. It had the full Lindsey Buckingham treatment with the cool – it might have been a loop and then Mick [Fleetwood] probably overdubbed some amazing fills on it. I realized what a remarkable sculptor Lindsey Buckingham is. I just went, “Oh, right. Okay. ****, that’s how he saw the song.” You know, you don’t just go in there and pound your brains out and hope for the best – which is kind of what we did on “Outside the Rain.”

Reporter: The other song would have been "Gypsy," from their Mirage album, right?
Lynch: Yeah. Mr. Buckingham is a genius. Full stop. That one just didn’t make it [with the version that we cut]. That saddened me. I kind of knew it was probably ultimately my fault, because when you go in to cut a track, really, the only thing that you’re worried about is the drums. It’s the one thing that’s irreplaceable. And this is back before there were clicks and time code. These are live performances and I didn’t really understand the studio yet. I just knew that you went in there to kick ass. That was my thought: I’m in the studio and I’m supposed to kick ass. And it’s like, “No, that’s not what you’re really supposed to do. You’re supposed to make a record.” I figured that out much later and Lindsey Buckingham helped me inadvertently figure that out when I heard his version of what we did and I went, “Oh!” [Laughs.] Oh, he’s much smarter than me! This guy knows **** I may never know! But you know, being young, you only get to do that once.

if you can find the Behind the Music (I still think that's where it was) it's where Tom says that Lindsey is her best producer. I've worked on her songs and tried to figure them out and gotten stuck and then Lindsey comes in and says do this or that and I go, oh yeah, that's exactly it. He also talks about how that's part of the curse of being in a band that your stuff is better with the other people in the band and you're kinda stuck with each other whether you like it or not because that's the stuff everyone wants to hear.

Sorry HomerMcvie, if it was the 'wrong' word you could of edited the word but you didn't! You let it stand.

That's why I made the comment?

It was just my opinion, that's all!
