Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers reunite for Grammy honor

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Tom Petty got his band the Heartbreakers back together for a high-class gig to launch Grammy weekend.
Foo Fighters, Don Henley, Norah Jones, Gary Clark Jr., Jackson Browne, the Head and the Heart, and George Strait were among those honoring the 66-year-old singer-songwriter as MusiCares Person of the Year on Friday night.
Petty was toasted for his musical achievements and philanthropic work two days before the Grammy Awards.
It was quite the star-studded rehearsal for the Heartbreakers' 40th anniversary tour that begins April 20 in Oklahoma City.
After watching from backstage as other artists performed his music, Petty strapped on a guitar for "Waiting for Tonight" with the Bangles as his backup singers. Original Heartbreakers Mike Campbell and Benmont Tench, along with drummer Steve Ferrone, shared the stage.
During "Don't Come Around Here No More" Petty invited the crowd to dance in front of the stage and actress Helen Mirren was one of hundreds who made her way to the front.
Stevie Nicks, whose friendship with Petty dates to 1978, joined him for their hit duet "Stop Draggin' My Heart Around."
"He is as sweet as he is talented," Nicks told the audience.

Jeff Lynne and Dhani Harrison, son of the late Beatle George Harrison, joined Petty on "I Won't Back Down." Petty closed the show after midnight with "Runnin' Down a Dream."
Petty noted it's been two years since he played with the band he formed in 1976 in his hometown of Gainesville, Florida. He has focused on producing music in recent years.
"I realized I've been in one of the two or three best rock bands there is," he told the crowd after accepting his award.
Petty recalled arriving in Los Angeles in 1974 and going to Leon Russell's house, where Ringo Starr and Harrison were recording. After a while, Petty donned sunglasses inside.
Russell asked him what he was doing and Petty explained he thought he would be cool. Russell lectured him that wearing sunglasses at night is an honor you earn.
"I thank Leon for that advice," Petty said, pulling out a pair of aviators and putting them on to applause.
Led by Dave Grohl, Foo Fighters earned the night's first standing ovation for their version of "Honey Bee." Clark joined them for "Breakdown," riffing on his blues guitar in an extended jam.
Browne, one of Petty's contemporaries, sang "The Waiting" and "Learning to Fly." Jones tapped her tall black cowboy boots as she sang "Time to Move On" and "You Don't Know How It Feels."
Henley was backed by a five-piece horn section and hit all the high notes in "Freefallin'." Jakob Dylan, who once opened for Petty, sang "Love is a Long Road." Wearing his signature black hat, Strait rocked out on "You Wreck Me." Randy Newman performed a piano version of "Refugee," and the Head and the Heart played "You Got Lucky."
Petty recalled receiving a card from Johnny Cash on his 50th birthday. Cash wrote, "You're a good man to ride the river with."
"That's all I want to be," Petty said. "I'm going to keep on riding."
Among the crowd in the vast Los Angeles Convention Center hall were Starr, Joe Walsh, Jimmy Jam, model Kate Upton, actor John Stamos, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi and Olivia Harrison, wife of the late Beatle.
Friday's dinner and auction generated more than $8.5 million, the highest grossing evening in the tribute's 27-year history, Recording Academy president Neil Portnow said.

Who was the star of Grammys' all-star tribute to Tom Petty? Petty himself

“Twenty years ago, I would have been way too cynical to do this,” Tom Petty proclaimed as he stood in jeans and a designer Army jacket in front of a black-tie crowd Friday night in Los Angeles.
Petty was the “Person of the Year” for the 27th gala for MusiCares, the Grammy organization’s charity wing.
That meant an auction and dinner that raised a record $8.5 million for what’s known as “the Red Cross of the music industry,” a group that helps musicians and music industry types with anything from health care needs to housing to instruments.
That meant an array of stars – including Jackson Browne, Don Henley, George Strait, Norah Jones, Lucinda Williams, Foo Fighters, Jakob Dylan, the Lumineers, Regina Spektor, Taj Mahal and Cage the Elephant – singing Petty songs for 2 1/2 hours.
Then Petty and the Heartbreakers took the stage for a first-rate 40 minutes that pretty much lived up to his boast of being in one of the two or three best rock ‘n’ roll bands around.
Considering that the Heartbreakers had only a week’s rehearsal after two years off, they were tight and torrid, especially Mike Campbell’s guitar work on “Running Down a Dream.”
Petty was joined by a series of special guests, including three of the Bangles on backup vocals, Jeff Lynne and Dhani Harrison on guitar and, of course, Stevie Nicks. She and Petty connected on their hit duet, “Stop Dragging My Heart Around” and on “Insider,” a ballad that he wrote for her but he thought she rejected it. No, she thought her record label gave it the thumbs down.
Two good friends had a good laugh.

If Petty was the star at his own tribute concert, Gary Clark Jr. was a major highlight. He joined the Foo Fighters on a ferocious treatment of “Breakdown,” featuring his transcendently soulful guitar. Clark had the spotlight to himself on “Good Enough,” bringing the blues from a very deep place.
Other memorable performances were delivered by Randy Newman on a down-tempo solo piano rendition of “Refugee”; a surprisingly assertive and rockin’ Strait on “You Wreck Me”; and Henley on “Free Falling” with some Paul Simon-evoking horns.
The all-star backup band, assembled by producer T-Bone Burnett, included Heartbreakers drummer Steve Ferrone, organist Booker T. Jones, Rebecca and Megan Lovell of Larkin Poe on mandolin and lap steel guitar and harmony vocals, and Nashville pedal steel ace Russ Pahl, who got his start in the Twin Cities in the Sky Blue Water Boys.
Speaking of Minnesota, Grammy-winning producer Jimmy Jam was in the house, as were Ringo Starr, Joe Walsh and Nancy Pelosi, U.S. House of Representatives minority leader.

Tom Petty reunites with Stevie Nicks, ELO's Jeff Lynne at MusiCares gala

LOS ANGELES — There was no shortage of electrifying performances at MusiCares Person of the Year, which teed off Grammys weekend with a glitzy auction and concert Friday at the Los Angeles Convention Center.
Throughout the nearly four-hour event, rock artists old and new including Foo Fighters, Don Henley, Gary Clark Jr. and Cage the Elephant took the stage to honor singer/guitarist Tom Petty, 66. But it was the night's legendary headliner that had fans springing from their tables and rushing to the front of the ballroom, where Petty performed a five-song set with his band The Heartbreakers.
Backed by all-female group The Bangles, Petty launched the show with Waiting for Tonight, before inviting longtime friend and collaborator Stevie Nicks onstage for two classic duets: Stop Draggin' My Heart Around, which Petty wrote for her 1981 debut album Bella Donna; and Insider, off his album Hard Promises that same year.
Afterward, Petty brought out Electric Light Orchestra's Jeff Lynne for a rousing rendition of their 1989 collaboration, I Won't Back Down, which brought the entire crowd to its feet.
The three-time Grammy winner signed off with fan favorite Runnin' Down a Dream, joyously capping the Grammys' most successful Person of the Year event ever. This year's gala raised a record-breaking $8.5 million for MusiCares, which provides financial, medical and personal assistance to musicians and industry professionals in their times of need.
"I'm so beyond honored to be here for MusiCares, something that does something for musicians," Petty said before his performance. "I know people that this has directly affected; they've helped so many people."
He continued to shout out "great American songwriters" in attendance such as Jackson Browne and Randy Newman, and voice his support for younger rock acts including The Head and the Heart and The Shelters, whose self-titled debut album he produced.
Along with an amusing anecdote about "earning" the right to wear his signature sunglasses at night, Petty also shared the unlikely story of how his signature tune, Free Fallin', almost never came to be.
"I had written this song, Free Fallin', and taken it to my label, and they rejected the record," Petty said. "That had never happened to me before and I was like, 'Wow, what do I do?' And I forgot about it." But after an industry dinner one night at record executive Mo Ostin's house, George Harrison "was like, 'Let's get the guitars out and sing a little bit. Let's do that Free Fallin', Tom.' We did it and (music producer) Lenny Waronker was like, 'That's a hit.'
"I said 'Well, my record company won't put it out,' " Petty continued. "And Mo says, 'I'll (expletive) put it out.' "

I agree. She looks cute. Didn't she wear these backstage when she was on James Corden too?

Well it was the first single and was in the Top 3 for 6 weeks, so it definitely promoted the album well, but who knows what would have happened with a different lead single.

The video of Stop Draggin' My Heart Around was one of the videos that went on heavy rotation on the newborn MTV channel, while the video they had initially filmed for Edge Of 17 turned out a failure and they had to fall back on using the performance of the HBO special, so actually the former is the only song from Bella Donna to have a proper video that could benefit from the new MTV era.

Idk why I find it amusing how the Everly Brothers are always her go-to example/comparison for duets but hardly anyone these days even knows who they are. Though I feel like that interviewer barely knew a thing in general.

Me! Thank you for compiling and sharing those. She is too adorable. Love the photos of her with Don Henley, Tom Petty and Dave Grohl...so cool. The clip of Insider is great too; always been a favorite, no matter the decade in which they're singing it.

Just great!
