The family are now saying this:

Quote:
"We would like everyone to know that, contrary to previous and current reports, there has been no memorial, funeral or tribute service for Prince that was organized or authorized by the family or Paisley Park representatives. Together, the family is planning an official memorial service and public event to take place in the near future."

"Prince and his music influenced so many people that we feel inspired to celebrate his life and legacy in just the right way. We appreciate the public's patience and have been comforted by your outpouring of love, support and condolences. We look forward to sharing with the world this celebration of, and farewell to, our Prince. Details will be coming soon."

http://www.people.com/article/prince...-memorial-plan
Meanwhile, the medical examiner's office has released this statement “Midwest Medical Examiner’s Office has not released any information regarding the Prince Rogers Nelson investigation to anyone, including law enforcement. Results are pending. This is an ongoing investigation in partnership with the Carver County Sheriff’s Office. We will have no further comment at this time.”

Honestly don't know what to believe of anything that has been printed anymore.

I just don't know why Prince was left on his own in his house, just days after a medical emergency.

That's what I thought when I heard that help had arrived just hours too late - why was he allowed to be left alone in that condition, when he'd already overdosed just a week earlier? If you are having to take that amount of pills you are constant risk of overdose. It's just too sad to think about really.

But then it's likely he didn't want someone with him 24hours/day, and it does sound as though the people close to him were doing everything they could to help, it just wasn't quite enough.

Highly addictive painkillers and the frequency with which they are prescribed is a horrid problem. I can't help but feel blame towards the pharmaceutical companies that are making so much money from these drugs - and they must be aware of how many lives they are wrecking.

Agreed. I think that due to this case it might become more a topic of public discussion and they appear to be doing a very thorough investigation.

Prince was such a private person, I think he would have hated going to rehab and the public being aware of it. He may have been trying to deal with this issue on his own but that is very difficult.

I know he was always supposed to be very opposed to recreational drugs, but prescription drugs can be just as hazardous if they are abused.

At this point I am skeptical about the rumors of illness. If that were the case I do not know how he could have recently travelled half way around the world and done a string of practically one man shows with stellar reviews. But who knows? We shall see when the results are in.

Prince had seen a doctor the day before his death last month, according to a police affidavit filed Tuesday.

MINNEAPOLIS — A local doctor who had treated Prince twice in recent weeks showed up at the musician’s estate near here on the morning he died, only to discover that he had just been pronounced dead after being found collapsed in an elevator of his home, according to a police affidavit.

The doctor, Michael T. Schulenberg, had seen Prince the previous day, April 20, according to the affidavit, which was filed in connection with a search warrant for Prince’s medical records.

The affidavit was filed by an investigator for the sheriff’s office in Carver County, where Prince lived. Dr. Schulenberg, who practices family medicine, also saw Prince on April 7, the day he canceled a show in Atlanta, the warrant said.

During his two visits, Dr. Schulenberg performed tests and prescribed medication for an undisclosed ailment, the affidavit said. Dr. Schulenberg said he had arrived at Prince’s compound to turn over the test results.

The warrant sought medical records from the North Memorial Medical Center, which is part of the health system where Dr. Schulenberg used to work.

Authorities have not released a cause of death, and have said that a determination might be weeks away. But Dr. Schulenberg’s visit makes clear that Prince was actively receiving medical treatment before his death on April 21. He also was preparing to be treated for an opioid dependency from a California doctor, Howard Kornfeld.

The doctor’s son, Andrew Kornfeld, and two friends of Prince initially found him collapsed. Andrew Kornfeld, who works for his father’s treatment center, had rushed on an overnight flight from San Francisco to get Prince enrolled in treatment, according to William Mauzy, a lawyer for the Kornfelds, who said the star’s representatives had sought the help
.

Dr. Schulenberg, 46, has been licensed to practice in Minnesota since 1997. He has no disciplinary history, according to state records, and there are no allegations of wrongdoing on his part.

Lesa Bader, a spokeswoman for Dr. Schulenberg’s most recent employer, North Memorial Health Care, said she could not comment on Prince’s treatment because of medical privacy laws. Dr. Schulenberg worked for North Memorial when Prince was found dead but is no longer employed by the medical system. Ms. Bader said the hospital does not comment on personnel matters.

Telephone messages left for Dr. Schulenberg were not returned.

The affidavit lays out Prince’s earlier medical concerns. Kirk Johnson, a close friend, told investigators the star had visited another local hospital in 2014 or 2015 for an undisclosed illness. Mr. Johnson said Prince had received fluids during his visit.

It is unclear what medications Prince was taking, but people close to him have said he suffered debilitating pain in his hips and elsewhere from decades of intense performances. Authorities have said they are investigating what role painkillers might have played in his death.

The federal Drug Enforcement Administration and the United States attorney’s office in Minneapolis have joined the inquiry.

After postponing the April 7 show in Atlanta because he said he had the flu, he did a makeup performance the following week that observers described as electrifying. But Prince complained of stomach pains after the concert. And on his flight home, his private jet had to make an emergency landing in Moline, Ill., because he fell ill.

His publicist said the emergency landing was a result of the flu. But emergency records showed that the pilot radioed that an unresponsive passenger was on board. Prince was carried off the plane by his bodyguard, the records said. Emergency medical personnel treated him with Narcan, which is typically administered to treat opioid overdoses, according to a law enforcement official briefed on the case. The official also said that Prince had powerful painkillers on him when he was found dead.

Despite the medical scare, Prince was seen out and about afterward near his Paisley Park estate in Chanhassen, Minn., a suburb here. He hosted a party at the estate on the Saturday before his death. And two days before he was found, he was at a jazz club in Minneapolis taking in a show

I'm not surprised if he overdosed on Percocet. Percocet contains Oxycodone which according to this article is like the legal equivalent of heroin.

http://www.theguardian.com/uk/2002/m...ol.theobserver

These drugs are potentially so dangerous, and people think they are safe because a doctor prescribes them. If you take them long term and end up physically, emotionally and mentally dependent, it must be almost impossible to stop taking it without needing serious help. As tolerance develops you need more and more until you reach overdose levels.

It says in the article above that in the US it's aggressively marketed and in some towns 40% of the population are addicted to it

I have a particular interest in this kind of subject. My degree is in Biochemistry but I chose not to work in the field, as I don't agree with a lot of what is happening in the pharmaceutical industries. On the few occasions I've been given a prescription most have ended up in the bin. (And I know that I'm generalising and I am aware some drugs are lifesavers and even opioids are great in certain circumstances ).

I found this article to be the most informative about how the addiction specialist was trying to help Prince, but it was too late.

Except for Elvis, Michael Jackson and Prince and a few others who could
afford to have Dr. Feelgoods and "yes men" around them. And there needing
to be something done about the ease at which they (their type) get easy access
to such drugs - I disagree with the rest of us being punished for abusers.

It's not just the drugs that they abused. We can't even go in and buy
for ourselves over the counter sinus medication that works. And if
you do have to go to the emergency room, sometimes they're suspicious
you're an addict. I hate that.

I hate being treated like a child. Take some responsibility for yourselves.
I'm tired of paying the price for others mistakes. Feels like we're still in
school when one student gets the whole class in trouble.

I do feel sorry for addicts. Whether their normal people or stars.
But know what you're taking. And then take some responsibility.

I've always maintained that pharmaceuticals can have great uses when they are prescribed and taken the correct way.

As for Madonna. Sometimes I like her, sometimes I can't stand her. I watched her tribute on a small screen and probably bad audio. But I thought she did okay even though she was nervous. It was better than Lady Gaga's tribute to Bowie. Madonna isn't the best singer but that isn't really what she is about. She's an entertainer who shrewdly stays within her natural limits. Her hair is flattering when softer color and style. Her suit in purple/lilac color was demure for a change and not crying out for attention.

To me, the three people who really defined pop in the 80s were Michael Jackson, Prince and Madonna. So I wasn't upset at Madonna being chosen. She knew Prince for 30 years and though they had some rough patches they seemed like good friends again recently. I believe that Madonna was invited to Paisley Park studios last year.

Still a lot of confusion over what happened and it could still be awhile before there is more information http://www.usatoday.com/story/life/p...bute/84581426/

However, his personal bodyguard has denied that Prince was addicted to painkillers.

A bit OT sorry but I thought this was odd - Madonna seems to be talking with a southern accent lately? Why is that? It was noticed when she was here in Australia recently too.

In pictures from the tribute it looks like one of her eyes is droopy. I guess that is from cosmetic surgery or fillers.

Madonna is fast becoming a lone survivor among her biggest peers. So many are already gone.

However, Cyndi Lauper is still going and from this, she still sings great. I believe she originally recorded this song written by Prince in two different octaves.

I know this is going off topic slightly on the Prince thread but it's related to my post about pharmaceuticals above.

I spotted a book in the library yesterday - Bad Pharma. I'd heard about it but never read it, I'm now working my way through it. It's very detailed with plenty of statistics, but incredibly informative and thoroughly researched. It's written by a doctor and was on the best sellers lists in the UK in 2012. For anyone interested in the horrendous problems within the pharmaceuticals industry this is a great book.

This is the book's summary on Amazon:

Ben Goldacre puts the $600bn global pharmaceutical industry under the microscope. What he reveals is a fascinating, terrifying mess. ***Now updated with the latest government responses to the book***

Doctors and patients need good scientific evidence to make informed decisions. But instead, companies run bad trials on their own drugs, which distort and exaggerate the benefits by design. When these trials produce unflattering results, the data is simply buried. All of this is perfectly legal. In fact, even government regulators withhold vitally important data from the people who need it most. Doctors and patient groups have stood by too, and failed to protect us. Instead, they take money and favours, in a world so fractured that medics and nurses are now educated by the drugs industry.

The result: patients are harmed in huge numbers.

Ben Goldacre is Britain’s finest writer on the science behind medicine, and ‘Bad Pharma’ is the book that finally prompted Parliament to ask why all trial results aren’t made publicly available – this edition has been updated with the latest news from the select committee hearings. Let the witty and indefatigable Goldacre show you how medicine went wrong, and what you can do to mend it.
