Well, to be fair, I recall it was Lindsey (according to Stevie) that didn't think Christine should be on Say You Will if she wasn't going to tour.

I know, I know. Not the same thing.

Tough crap they made up some arbitrary rule after the fact that "oh we want everyone to play AND sing to be a real member of the band". If FM did that John and Mick would be out. WTF. Plus Felder wrote the music and the signature riff to Life in the Fast Lane. It's not like he didn't contribute. They were just greedy and thought they could bully him out of his share so they could have it, and run the show by themselves. He was legally entitled to have his share, and he had the nerve to stand by that. So they were buttholes about it and tried to tie him up in legal battles and fees so any profits he'd get he'd end up giving to the lawyers. Skeevy douchey behavior, but, honestly, that's the Eagles.

Makes me sooo glad that FM doesn't work that way. Not that FM doesn't have power struggles, but power in FM tends to be founded on contribution to the band's success/sales. Though Stevie and Lindsey were indeed brought in on salaries (like $200/week each or something) at first, once the first album was a success they were equal members not hired hands. BonJovi runs his band as hired hands, so does Tom Petty with the Heartbreakers, saying not everyone can or should have an equal say. FM doesn't work that way, and a lot of the credit for that goes to Mick, and John, for not being twits.

End of soap box.

Edited to add: None of this is directed at Homer of course or meant to diminish your sense of loss for someone who's music meant so much to you. Band politics are just ugly and lots of money often brings out other sides of folks.
I have NO IDEA what the FM split is after Chris returned, but I can guarantee you that it's not 5 x 20%. I'm only saying that Stevie's lawyers are exactly like The Eagles. It's a BUSINESS, and they're commandeering the largest percentage that they can, for their client.

Before Chris returned, I've read multiple times, that it was
Stevie - 40%
Lindsey - 30%
Mick - 15%
John - 15%

I wouldn't even want to guess what the split is now, but I'd wager that somehow SN has a higher cut than LB or CM, with JM and MF with 10-12.5%.

If that is the case, I wonder what the point of Tom Petty having a solo album was all about?

I've always wondered that, too.

I can see Genesis because Phil's music was so different. But Tom Petty sounds the same to me every time.

The unfortunate thing is, this still won't change Stevie's mind, either. She will continue to drag her feet and postpone. The warning shot across the bow for FM came when their very own (past) members started dying- ala the Bobs (Brunning and Welch), as well as long-time allies such as Judy Wong and Herbert Worthington. Then John was diagnosed with colon cancer. Still no movement from Stevie. Christine returned against all odds, the one condition Stevie said which would make her record with the band again. Nada. "If you don't love me now, you will never love me again."

She's bound and determined to put out more bad demos, more selfies, and tour on it.

Oh I TOTALLY agree with you about the money.

I guess the point I was making is that the power has been fairly fluid within FM over the years. The power has shifted around a bit and who has influence/control over things is dynamic, whereas in the Eagles they wanted it fixed and forever. When S & L joined, Mick had the power. Mick called the shots-- I'm taking the band to Sausalito to record, whatever whatever. Then the hits started happening and both Stevie's and Lindsey's "power" over things grew. Lindsey exerted his will on things via producing and Stevie through her ability to sell records/tickets/and draw media attention. By Tusk, Mick was no longer the center of control, Lindsey threatens to leave and Tusk is made, and though Stevie had a lot of power she wasn't in position to challenge him as much yet because as arranger/producer he really determined the sound of the records. Then she went solo, became an even bigger star, got her high-powered management team together and really they began making demands on her behalf and calling many more shots. We still see the standoff between her and Lindsey today (the DR documentary captured a lot of that well. In the old days he would have said she needed to change her lyrics and she would have.). Fierce battles over single vs double album. Etc.

But I don't think for a second that if John for instance really balked at something that it wouldn't cause the others to stop and think -- they wouldn't just steamroll over him. Or Christine for that matter. Splitting the money is one thing, but "owning" the band or some folks being in charge and others just being hired hands isn't the way it is. (Or maybe it is and they just bs us in their media interviews).

I think it was Mick who said in recent years in comparing FM to bands like the Eagles, that FM still sees themselves as a (dysfunctional) family, not just a business entity. They have ongoing personal interactions outside the band. Glenn and Don not so much. Lindsey commented also that unlike the Eagles, who know what they will do next and why, FM is more of a mess because everyone has their own agendas, and that because no one is defined as the leader it makes a bit of a chaotic mess and hard to get on track. (New album, anyone?)

I don't believe (maybe someone else knows different) that anyone in FM has the power to fire anyone else. Hence the pouting and posturing and building alliances that seems to go on to sway majority opinion to one's own wishes and getting managers to yell at each other, as opposed to one or two people saying "this is how it goes, get on board or go find another band"

Right?

Not sure if you've ever watched the Heartbreakers documentary... Benmont Tench is STILL so irritated and offended by the whole hired-hand thing he can barely talk about it.

I think you're thinking of Hotel California. Life in the Fast Lane was Walsh. Felder did not contribute to the writing of that song.

I can only say that it was reported that Stevie and Christine both made equal money last year from the tour and it was a lot. They were joint third in the Forbes list for female entertainers last year.

I have to say that my eyebrows have been raised over Lindsey's attitude, because he seems to see himself as leader of the band these days, though Mick was doing much of the promotion in Australia, dealing with media etc. Fleetwood Mac had a history before he joined.

Him telling Christine she had to be firmly committed to return to the group - she had to ask his permission? And then Stevie told her to be in good shape when she returned because touring could be gruelling. I love Christine's response - she told Stevie she knew about that because she'd been in FM before her! Way to go in reminding her! (Even though I love Stevie and you can argue Lindsey had a point.)

I still find they have loads of musical chemistry onstage that is obvious. They all appear to have figured out a 'role'. But you can bet personalities and politics still play a part, as with most bands.

Wow, it's hard to imagine Stevie's management accepting that. I hope it's true!

Except it's just an opinion, and not one held by everyone.

I'd love a new Fleetwood Mac album as much as anyone else, but trash-talking Stevie's solo work isn't going to make it manifest.

Maybe when she finally does hit the studio, she can record a cover of that song by Talk Talk. "It's my life. Don't you forget."

I guess I'm just saying: Consider the fact that Stevie is not married to Fleetwood Mac. She has her own career, her own goals, and things on her own list to accomplish before she's done, and there's nothing wrong with that.

Now, if she'd just send Lindsey some damn demos to work on, we could put this all behind us.

From what I've seen Forbes just goes by box office receipts, divides by 5, and guesstimates what people on their lists make. I wouldn't assume that Forbes is privy to what the internal contracts are about how that money gets divvied up within the band.
