I always thought "Venus doesn't glitter when she stands next to you" tied in with "lose yourself in a silvery dress." It made/makes me think of the female stars of the late 20's and the 30's and 40's like Garbo who often dressed in silver sequin dresses. When they were in those dresses and photographed in black and white, the dress just glittered as if it had diamonds on it. For a good example watch the last scene in the "The Women" when they (particularly Joan Crawford) are all dressed up to the nines in the ladies lounge - talk about sparkle!!!!!

So, I think Stevie is saying not even Venus' beauty (the superlative) can compare to someone like Garbo (and Stevie who in the song is fantasizing about being someone like Garbo) when they are/were in that dress. The TISL lyric "You can consume all the beauty in the room - baby" also touches on this theme.

There she goes again with those metaphors!!!!

Exactly.

Leave it:
Sometimes it's a bitch...sometimes it's a breeze

(most all the lyrics to Docklands)

(most all the lyrics to Street Angel)

Love it:
How the faces of love have changed turning the pages ~ and I have changed oh, but you...you remain ageless

I still look up ~ When you walk in the room ~ I've the same wide eyes ~ They tell the story ~ Try not to reach out ~ When you turn 'round and you say hello ~ And we both pretend ~ There was an end ~ But your no great pretender!

Rhiannon rings like a bell through the night

You said that you'd give me life ~ but you never told me... about the... fireeeee....

And a memory is all that's left for you now...

Im alone now, with my thoughts...

Mistress of my fate, I was a couture

Dont feel so bad... I thought the same until I read differently (likely on SaraRhiannon.com). I may have mis-spelled couture... you know what I mean tho, the fancy~shmancy clothes.

I like that MUCH better! I'll have to remember to do the same whenever I listen to that song!

Oh, and Eric... that lyric Jake posted was just a joke.
Says who?
Do you mean you've never heard the chicken outtake? It's from a live concert early in the RAL tour. Stevie was improvising a lot with different bird motifs: the quail, the penguin, the pelican, the pigeon, the dodo, the ostrich. She had replaced her spins with the actual Chicken Dance, but she accidentally hopped backwards off the stage three times. Mick writes about these falls in one of his books. Still, it's a powerful concert video for a bootleg, especially when at the end of the song live chickens are released into the desert. Somebody hands one to Stevie, but she is baffled when it won't fly out of her hand.
And Eric, never believe anything I post.

WHAT DO YOU MEAN IT'S NOT "CARDSHARK"? DAMM!T

Laugh/cringe at:

"I saw him the other day, I saw him again yesterday" OK, so are there any days you haven't seen him?

"But I like some TIME/LIFE edition...tradition...competition" This is my Horton Hears a Hoo song

"What's the matter, baby...baby, baby" Apparently, your drug addiction, that's what

So many lines that I love:

"track a ghost through the fog"

"I turned around, and the water was closing all around me, like a glove"

"the keeper of the time is blind"

"and the lady's feeling just like the moon that she loved"

"rock & roll ballerina, where else would she go"

"filling the air with colors and winds, that lift you up to God"

"you come running out in the wind with me, the ocean is your blanket"

"and it brings up the wind and it rises around you in pillars of color"

"you can dedicate your pain to him"

Whoa, sorry for the rambling!

Paula

Rock A Little is not a great album. However, there are a few songs (and visuals) that redeem it.

1) "Talk to Me" Stevie's vocals have never been better.

2) The "I Can't Wait" video. At least she {tried} for the time that was.

3) AND my point.... In my opinion, the one great album track ("Has Anyone Ever.... is NOT an album track, it is an anthem), is "I Sing For the Things"....

"Did the fear inside you- make you turn and run- make you turn and run- make you turn and run away from me...... Don't be scared, baby....."
To each his own, but I LOVE the RAL album except for this one song. IMO Imperial Hotel, Rock a Little, and No Spoken Word are far superior.
But it's comforting to know you and I don't agree on everything, Tower. I was beginning to think I was sleepwalking to the computer and typing your posts.

If the song confuses people THAT much and this could be a consolation, feel free to call me darklemonsoup from now on.

Uhm, the lyric is "card shark"!

There's very little vagueness in "The Dealer"... she's talking about holding all the cards, being in charge of the situation ("mistress of my fate")... she's the card shark.

"Couture" is definitely a misinterpretation.

No no no, she's singing "Missed chips of my flakes, I was a cole slaw."

Yes Jake, this used to bug the Hell out of me too, UNTIL I figured out that it's not "the earth, the sea, and the sky" that *are* at rest with the ocean...she is still referring to the bright light. So, if you took that out, "The bright light...is at rest with the ocean..." it makes sense. Let me try that better:

The bright light is lying down the earth and the sea and the sky,
[The bright light] is at rest with the ocean...

I hope this is understandable, I'm very tired right now.

Thanks, it's understandable.
But I still hate it.
