Because it's awesome and a perfect example of why I'm a Stevie fanatic?

And how has she already done that song? The SA version is just a polished turd compared to the potential of what a fully realized modern take on it could be.

Oh Man. She Loves Him Still is in my top 5 favs of Stevie demos. I don't think it will make the record but I really wish it would. But part of the reason I love it is because of her fragile, broken vocal. Not sure if I would love it as much with her current voice. Mirror Mirror, on the other hand, I think she could totally nail. I know it's been released already but she could redo it, if she and Dave both felt strongly enough. I don't think anything is off the table for this record.

As others have said, a 1985 recording of Mirror Mirror made during the sessions for Rock A Little was released as the b-side for Blue Denim, on cassette only, in 1994. It is not a Street Angel version. It is the RAL version. It's as perfect and cocaine-fueled as this song will ever get. Stevie will never top that vocal, or create more atmosphere for the song than she did here.

The only Street Angel version of Mirror Mirror is an unreleased recording circulating amongst fans, first shared here on The Ledge.

They are very, very different recordings.

I'll give you the fact that the demo (I'm guessing the ONLY demo we have) of "Night Gallery" is very muddy. To me it sounds like it was recorded on a cocaine fueled morning at like 4am. The tempo is off with both the synth and tambourine. Her vocal is very gruff and all over the place. It is, basically, a mess.

So why do I LOVE this mess? First and foremost, the lyrics. Second, the key change up between the verses and chorus (very 80's, very cool). And finally, the fact that her angry vocal ("In the paintings on the wall, she says, 'There it is'...") IS VERY GRUFF and all over the place.

The demo we have seems to skip in places, which sucks because it is a very short song. But I adore it and believe she could turn the muddy mess that I love into a powerhouse rock ballad.

BTW - Is there a better, clean copy of "Night Galley" out there? One that doesn't skip? I never heard of anything else regarding this song surfacing when we got all those master reels many years ago.

I've only heard the version you describe, and I absolutely love it, for all of the reasons you stated. Great post!

I wouldn't exactly call it a song. I would call it a sophisticated mood piece with a great vocal. Very dark and delicious.

Her vocal on the Mirror Mirror version that did make it on a B-side was stellar. I listened to that song just because of vocal. The lyrics are non sensible but the vocal was one of her best ever.
