Brandi Carlile's "The Chain"

I just heard Brandi Carlile's studio version of "The Chain." On first listen, it sounds great. She has a tremendous voice, and the band stuck very close to the original arrangement. I like it when bands take cover songs in a new direction, but there is nothing wrong with keeping to the original arrangement so long as it's done well.

It got me thinking that whoever produces Brandi, who is one of my favorite artists, should produced the next FM record. I'd like to hear that organic, raw quality in FM's music. It would be a welcome change from the studio tricks that have started to get old.

I love Brandi! I saw her do The Chain live (and it was awesome), but I didn't know she had a studio version out...where is that from?
Florence is great too, and their version is fantastic as well. Delta Rae also do a really good version...

The Brandi Carlile version is on a compilation called Sweetheart 2014, which will be released by Starbucks on Feb. 14.

Saw her do it live and it was great. Little Big Town also does a fantastic cover!

You were listening to Fleetwood Mac’s “The Chain” prior to recording. What made you gravitate to that song?

I always really liked Fleetwood Mac and Stevie Nicks in particular. I have a penchant for their drama. I live in a band that is also my family. Things can get really strange and I love that about bands. I met [Fleetwood Mac’s] Lindsey Buckingham backstage at a Dave Matthews concert and he was so cool and so inspired. I went back to the dressing room and put my headphones on and started listening to “The Chain.” I realized, “We need to cover this song and it represents our band in a way that I can’t really explain.” It was fertile ground for something that happened on The Firewatcher’s Daughter.
