This was actually the first solo album I got.....and it was a tape, for like $1.99 on Columbia House....I love it. There are some songs I love more than others, but I will rewind Rose Garden over and over. Yes, I still use the tape. It is the only solo or Mac album I do not have on CD. I also only listen to it while on the beach. Hearing this and knowing about the whole Klonopin scene made me want to get every other album she had.

Street Angel was delayed and delayed and delayed. I have a radio show from 1991 where she talks about her new album SA and her tribute song to Jane!

It was recorded over a three year period, mostly when she was on Klonopin. Stevie said that she didn't get along with Thom Panunzio at all. After she got out of rehab, she went back into the studio to fix things on the album. Panunzio, according to Stevie, was very cruel to her and caused a big stink over the fixing of the album. She brought Waddy in to re-dub some of the guitar parts and stuff. Then she released it. She said a while afterwards that the problem was MUCH bigger than just the music, it was the vocals. She said that what she should have done was record new vocals for some of the songs, which she was right about. To me, the vocals are just uninspired, there isn't ANY passion behind them.

However, I love some of the songs on SA.

Blue Denim
Greta
Street Angel
Love Is Like a River
Rose Garden

The rest I can do without, but I still listen to them!

Also, I WHOLEHEARTEDLY agree, the SA tour was FABULOUS! The Jones Bech video and CD is my favorite from that tour, such a good performance. And ya gotta love when she took the mic off the stand and knealed down to do the Edge of 17 wail at the shows!! I wish she would've done Love Is Like a River live, though, she could've tore that puppy up!

Pardon me, but just a quick correction...
By all accounts, Stevie and Thom Panunzio got along quite well (Thom also did engineering work on 'Bella Donna')... the producer with whom Stevie clashed, was Glyn Johns.

After initial recording was finished with Mr. Johns, Stevie hired Thom to help her "fix" the album, and bring it a little closer to something to which she wouldn't be embarrassed to have her name attached.

Even still, she was never totally pleased with the outcome.

Whichever producer it was who was cruel to her, I remember Stevie saying he did not want Waddy anywhere on the album.

Also, as I recall, Mirror Mirror was going to be the title of her next album until Stevie decided it didn't fit with the rest of Rock a Little.

Finally, I know Stevie did not write God's Garden, but if she can accidentally throw in a word like Emmiline and call it a keeper, she can change a few words in a chorus to make it a little more lovey dovey, IMO.

Honestly, I hated that she took the mic off the stand. Leaving the mic on the stand and bringing the stand backward to do her wails is one of her trademarks. There are not too many other artists (albeit ones who don't play an instrument onstage, and therefore cannot hold the mic) who can base their entire show around the mic stand and never take it off. Just my opinion...

You're right, I got it mixed up.

But, if Glyn Johns was Stevie's producer who worked with her from the summer of '92 to early '94, he has good reason to be pissed. All he got was percussion programming and some other programming credit, for the songs SA and Docklands. Panunzio only worked on it for two months after the album was completed to fix up the music with Campbell and Waddy. At the very least, he should have gotten some producing credit.

After Stevie & Thom Panunzio re-worked the album, Glyn Johns demanded that his name be removed from the production credits.

Musician-credits are a different story though, and he receives nods in the liner notes where applicable.

LOL! I didn't know that! I guess his name removal was with good reason, though... I was always under the impression from what Stevie said that he didn't even know that she reworked it behind his back.

In any case, are the Abbey Road Mixes from SA the ones that were produced by Johns?

And that dudes name reminds me of Glynnis Johns from Mary Poppins!

At the time he didn't know, but I'm sure he had to be told before the album was actually released or there may have been legal issues.

That's a very good question actually. I *think* that the "Abbey Road Mixes" are actually Glyn Johns' tracks stripped down by Stevie & Thom, before they started layering additional instrumentation and overdubs into the mix.

So they're sort of in an "in between" state.

By the way, I found some info on Ethan....
He was born in 1970, he is indeed Glyn Johns' son, and he's worked with Crosby Stills & Nash, David Crosby solo, Chris Stills (Stephen Stills' son), Rufus Wainwright, the Wallflowers, Emmylou Harris, Linda Ronstadt, and most recently with Counting Crows, and Ryan Adams.

Here's a pic from around 1999 (I need to get out my 'Street Angel' tour book, because I think I recognize him from somewhere)....

I'll have to listen to my SA bootlegs. I have Street Angel: Abbey Road Mixes, Street Angel Outtakes, and Street Angel: Early Release on CD; the Glyn Johns produced tracks must be on one of those.

Has anyone heard the Glyn Johns tracks? A while back, I saw some SA CD's up on eBay and one of them was advertised as the original '93 release before it got pushed back. Maybe it's the "Early Release" disc I have. I'll take a listen to them.

Just curious!
I'm sure someone else will be able to provide more details, but I remember her saying that he was like a ballet instructor, telling her that she was not to be late to the studio and she was not to goof around/socialize with friends in the studio. I remember that he spoke deridingly of Waddy & told Stevie not to bring him in for the sessions. She said that she has always had fun in the studio, but this time was no fun at all.
Does anyone remember, was this album right before or right after she stopped insisting on keeping the first "virgin" take of a song? I think it was right after.

For those who don't know Glyn Johns is a legendary and well respected producer who has worked with the likes of the Rolling Stones, The Who, The Eagles and Eric Clapton on some truly classic albums. I'm sure the record company thought Stevie was going to produce something really special with him at the helm. And on paper you must admit it sounds like a fantastic idea. Shame they didn't get on.

I hate to say it, but there are always two sides to every story and Stevie has said she was not well at all and made horrible decisions around this time. So, it could be Mr. Johns has nothing to nice to say about Stevie and her muscial decisions at that time. I am so glad she got off of that stuff!!!!!!!

Don't forget what her svengali, Mr. Unibrow, told her. He was just as much of a control freak!

So perhaps Stevie was upset that she couldn't seduce her new producer? This sounds like old-time Hollywood.
