Listening to the early take of Go Your Own Way - the lyrics to the chorus are different.

"You can go your own way
You can roll like thunder"

Who wants to bet those were still the lyrics when Stevie wrote Dreams?

that early take on GYOW is at the same time interesting and horrible .

i was wondering about that - what song did they bring in the studio first - GYOW or Dreams? who came up with those thunder lyrics first?

this version of SHN reminds me of later LB demos like Given Thing where there's barely any words and he's just mumbling something word-like to a melody. interesting to hear songs being in the process like that.

have to agree with people saying SN's voice and singing sounded great at the time. Dreams and especially that early version of the Chain sound like pretty little folk songs.

interesting to hear that early version of IDWK with only Lindsey singing.

NGBA is gorgeous.

yeah, I'm definitely glad the lyrics went back to what they are on the record . But it's interesting to hear how it all evolved.

I'd say probably GYOW was brought into the studio first, since it was played liveas early as '75, and Dreams wasn't even written until they were already in the studio working on Rumours.

HOWEVER, when they played it in '75, it had the chorus lyrics as we know them: "you can go your own way / you can call it another lonely day."

So I don't know if he changed them as a response to Stevie writing dreams, or if he changed them and then Stevie wrote dreams... or what.

interesting. those 1975 live versions sound so much more like the version we know now (without the second verse and enormous guitar solo), than that studio outtake. do we have any idea about dating of that studio outtake (is that info in the liner notes)?

They already had GYOW. Stevie did Dreams later (Sly's bed, etc.). Of course, we don't know when that particular take of GYOW was recorded.

Apparently i've got some money to spend (not), so i bought the super deluxe thing with the vinyl, which costs 70€ here (seriously too expensive but hey...).
And though this means i'm saying goodbye to my social life (or food) for a few weeks, i'm really happy about it. The packaging is great, but i never buy box sets so i can't really compare it with anything else. It's clean and pretty, and complete. The quality of the Rosebud DVD is not mind-blowing but good. The pictures are familiar but pretty. I'd love that with Tusk, documentary and all. It would be even more "arty".
Anyway, I just couldn't resist.

Hey everybody. So...

About the box set version, what is the track-by-track commentary like? Is it just little anecdotes? Or something more in depth? And does it cover just the regular album, or do they cover the extras, like "Doesn't Anything Last", "The Chain" demo, and "Keep Me There"?

And anyways, not that anybody cares, but I gotta say the "new" outtakes disc is soooo much better than the 2004 disc. For one, I think "Keep Me There" with the Christine vocal is great. So interesting. The demo of "The Chain" is just amazing. Both of these songs are so revelatory to the story of the classic version of "The Chain" that we all know.

Forgive me if I'm wrong, but you got Stevie's chorus from her version of "The Chain", then you got the ending of Christine's "Keep Me There" along with the guitar part from Lindsey's "Lola".

Anyways, besides those I really like the "acoustic duet" versions of "Never Going Back Again" and "Doesn't Anything Last". I gotta say though, I'm kinda surprised there even is two versions of "Doesn't Anything Last", as it just kinda seems like a snippet Lindsey never quite worked out. Maybe something that he threw away quick. But it seems like something they actually kinda worked on.

Overall, I can't understand why something like "Butter Cookie" was released in 2004 when they could have released this proper version of "Keep Me There". It seems like "Butter Cookie" was a jam with Christine singing some of the lyrics from "Keep Me There". What would be the point of putting out "Butter Cookie" over "Keep Me There". Although at least now we understand why it was titled "Butter Cookie (Keep Me There)". I gotta wonder with some of the early versions of other songs. The versions on this disc are so much more interesting than the ones they put on the older one. It's almost as if they compiled the 2004 version with the intent of making sure they still had some good stuff to release later. Which isn't to say the 2004 version was bad though. I'm still glad we got "Think About It", "Planets Of The Universe", "Doesn't Anything Last", and "For Duster".

I'm a little late of the gate placing my order, but hearing the clip of Stevie's demo "the Chain" is worth the price of the entire set for me. It is simply a beautiful song with an incredible vocal. Can't wait to hear Christine's contribution with Keep Me There, always found Butter Cookie an enjoyable, funky little tune.

I still dig "Butter Cookie", I think it's super enjoyable, but I think it's cool to hear the lyrics in their proper surroundings.

Listening to the various incarnations of Go Your Own Way, it occured to me for the first time how absolutely clever Lindsey was with this song. Perhaps it was on purpose - perhaps it was an accident, but he created a chorus that Stevie could sing along to with gusto, and really get into. Even though sometimes she didn't, it's always the best when Stevie and Lindsey would both fire those lines off at each other with ferocity.

AMEN.

Reiterating the simplicity, beauty and magic of this demo. Totally worth the reissue for me as well..

Same with Doesn't Anything Last and NGBA duets.

so GYOW came with them to FMac, a la Rhiannon and Landslide etc??

That would make it about their relationship problems well before Rumours.
