hmm, guess i'm generalizing my own wishes .

or maybe those are wishes of Lindsey fans who are not also Stevie fans and are barely FM fans?

so what would you all like him to do in 2014?

speaking for myself only, i'd absolutely hate it if he would spend the whole 2014 working on FM album instead of putting out twice as much of his new music or touring and putting out live stuff, probably in half the time he'd spend working on the Mac. and then after FM album he'd go touring with FM once again?! so we'd loose him for the whole 2013, 2014 and 2015??

so if FM is doing a new album, i wish they'd do it fast, and put it out in 2013 during the tour. so that all FM stuff is done by the end of 2013, or possibly first half of 2014.

^^ that all said, i don't think anybody can deny that all the years of postponing FM album have worked great for people who love Lindsey's music:
  • 2010 - the idea was for FM to go into studio and record a new album after 2009 UL tour - that didn't happen b/c SN was working on IYD the whole 2010 instead. so since the "time opened up" LB decided to "fill it" and that's how by the end of 2010 he was done with SWS.
  • 2011 - we got Saban in April and SWS studio album, tour, and Small Machine Live in LA CD and DVD
  • 2012 - 3 of 4 FM members were apparently hoping to record an album and recorded 8 tracks at the beginning of the year. SN wanted to tour with RS and promote IYD some more while trying to wrap up the IYD movie. so since some time once again opened up, LB embarked on a one-man solo tour which proved probably one of the best things he's ever done for his solo artist reputation, toured from the beginning of May through the end of November, and is now releasing a live album of his one-man tour.

so while SN spent 2010-2012 working on IYD album and movie and touring those, LB put out a studio album, toured the album with a band, then embarked on a one-man solo tour, and released 2 live albums plus DVD. so it seems if SN is about to hold off on a FM album for the next 5 or so years, we could get bunch more stuff out of LB!

EDIT: just occurred to me that i omitted something that happened probably some time at the beginning of 2011 and may have been the undertone and in the background of all this productivity - LB has gone indie and started his own label. i may be completely off base and speculating, but it seems this move gave him lots of freedom to do what he wanted instead of what someone else was telling him to do in order to fulfill some bottom line.

All speculation on my part but it just seems like she wants (and maybe has always wanted) the making of albums to be this sort of alternate universe she can move into full time with a sort of surrogate family and the others have a bit more practical approach because they actually do have families.
At the Mill Valley screening, she didn't really describe it this way. I remember her saying that people would show up around 2 pm, work for a few hours, stop for a big dinner and discuss world events, and then work another few hours. I think she also said something about 5 days a week. It really didn't seem any more all-encompassing than my own job (although the hours are somewhat shifted).

I don't think Stevie is against recording a new Mac record, she just isn't ready to commit to something so big. When they were ready to record she still wanted to promote IYD. She admits to "holding them up" and them "not being very happy about it" and that she told them she'd see them in 2013. I think after that a tour began to get lined up and they realized that there wouldn't really be enough time to record a record. I think after the tour next year, if everyone is free and the tour goes well then she may be willing to hit the studio with them. Or perhaps they will tour the US and then do some recording before they go overseas. However, if she is tired of FM by then and doesn't record then at least she only has to spend 2013 doing that and then she can go back to her solo career.

I wouldn't care if he spent all of 2014 working on an FM album, if the final output makes it worth it.

I will say that I don't want him to spend any time kowtowing. There is no FM without Stevie, but if she's not going to be reasonable, then I'd prefer there'd be no FM than for everyone to make unnecessary concessions. I want the compromises to be all the way around, with everyone giving and nobody breaking.

Maybe at this stage other members of Mac, due to marriage and children commitments etc, aren't able or willing to just let an album consume 24 hrs a day and instead approach it in a more business-like (to Stevie anyway) fashion-- come in for a few hours, work some tracks, then leave and live the other parts of your life and come back tomorrow.
But I don't think Stevie had fun making any FM albums after Rumours. She seemed to enjoy the condo with Christine back then, even though they were both fighting with their men. Next album, they were closeted up together for 13 months with Tusk and she hated it. Ayatollah (Lindsey's answer to that charge was that he couldn't have been treating her like a hostage, since she was not even around most of the time).

Of course, as someone pointed out recently, we don't know how the Mirage recording process went. It might have been something she enjoyed because it was around 1982 where she was saying that she and Lindsey could easily get back together -- but she knew if they did they would only break up again. So maybe they had some good moments during that recording process. Michele

Neither did SYW for that matter. She gave us a schedule for that. I don't remember what it was but she told us both when SHE got to the studio and left and when Lindsey did. It was not a whole day process that she outlined.

The way Ken described Rumours, they were hardly all ever there at the same time either. It doesn't sound like a 7 day a week job.

Has anyone here actually been in a recording studio and watched an album being recorded? I have - more than once. It is not a year long process, especially now. Laying down vocals does not take a year. It doesn't even take a week...

If you're any good it takes a very short time. Back in 1977 they had to deal with tape and drugs. But to take that long is insane.

I recently put out a CD, and I made myself FINISH one song a day. I recorded the drum tracks live(with a real drummer, since I'm a fairly sh*tty drummer), but I would overdub bass, guitar, keys, acoustic guitar, banjo, mandolin, and all three vocal parts. And I could do all this in less than an 8 hour window, per song. So yeah, taking a year to do an album, is literally retarded.

(However, in their defense, I was only going for "presentable" recordings, not Grammy worthy)

sounds good to me! so if they don't put out an FM album out during 2013 while touring, they've done nothing! everybody else is doing it, even people older than them, they can do it too. they are cranking out projects solo, so why not FM?

there doesn't seem to be much excuse for SN holdup either, since they don't have to be even in the same room much... unless she thinks that recording process is still the same as 30 or even 10 years ago. she and her fans are always saying she has tons of great songs in her vaults. if she's not inspired to write some new songs and she wants her old songs to see the light of the day, then contribute the vault songs, show up those few times you need to record vocals, or record them with Dave or someone and send them electronically in these 6 months before rehearsals, and there you go!

(but - why would anything be easy when it can be complicated, right?)

yes... that's what i'm worried about, mainly.

while i personally may care much more about Lindsey's solo music than what he does with FM, he seems to really want FM to do an album.

i may be completely off but that's been the feeling since 2009 UL tour - for 3 years now the rest of the Mac is ready for a new album, Mick and Lindsey have been saying that throughout 2009 (remember "there's no new album.... yet!"), in 2010 VH1 BTM, in various interviews at the start of 2012. at the same time, SN has been consistently finding one or the other reason to hold it up. i don't know whether that's her way to get concessions, whether she needs more time than others to get things done, or she just doesn't want to do it, period. her statements changed from no FM album without Dave, to no FM album at all (less than a month ago!), to greatest hits with 2-4 new songs in the last few weeks. so although hard to tell with all contradicting statements she makes, she may be progressing in her thinking towards putting out an album after all?

LINDSEY BUCKINGHAM TALKS NEW FLEETWOOD MAC ALBUM

Posted on November 4, 2012 by admin

Guitarist Lindsey Buckingham has told Rolling Stone that he would like to record a new Fleetwood Mac album.

Buckingham said that he and other members of the band had already begun work on material for a new record: “…about six, seven months ago, John [McVie] and Mick [Fleetwood] were over here and we actually cut some tracks, and we did enough for maybe half an album.”

However, Buckingham explained that the album, which would be Fleetwood Mac’s first since 2003s ‘Say You Will,’ was on the backburner for now: “…you gotta get [vocalist] Stevie [Nicks] on board with that, and at the time, she was really quite caught up in what she was doing. But I would love to do that because John and Mick were playing their asses off.”

Fleetwood Mac recently announced that they would be reuniting for a tour next April. Buckingham revealed that the band would begin rehearsals early next year: “Fleetwood Mac is gonna start rehearsing probably the beginning of February and I’m actually looking forward to it. I miss those guys.”

He added that he fulfilled his personal musical goals in his time away from the band: “The last eight or nine years, I’ve had a lot of growth. I sort of caught up on the need to explore the more esoteric side of the palette.”

hmm. it sounded to me in that Q&A that that was the schedule Dave kept ("because he has two young daughters") and perhaps some of the musicians but that she and Lori and Sharon continued to stay up working til 2 or 3 or 4 in the morning or whatever and on the weekends. (Reminds me of the scene in the Destiny Rules documentary where they are rehearsing forthe tour and she says they could do the whole set that night if they kept going and LB is pretty firm about having to leave no later than 9pm.)

It seemed as if what she actually liked was that when Dave returned to the house he didn't dump on the vocal arrangements or whatever else she had worked on in his absence, because he doesn't have the ego to have to be *the* creator of everything. It led me to interpret that as different from her working situation with LB where he wants to control *everything* and would probably dismiss or at least start changing what she had spent that time doing without him to put *his* stamp on it. (This may or may not be objectively true but it seems [I]her[I] subjective feelings about it.)

But I still think she loved the whole encompassing nature of the IYD experience... all in the house, making music, having big dinners, a real communal experience... if Dave was in and out due to other commitments fine but she still had enough of a circle of other people who were directly part of the band to stay up all night or all weekend with. I suspect with FM no one else who is actually part of the band is willing or able to do that. (They've all gone on to have fuller personal lives and families, and she's made her career the central thing in her life).

I think that's what it comes down to.

And it's funny, wasn't Stevie saying last year that maybe she and Lindsey would rent a house together in Wales and record another BN album? What happened?

That said, it sounds like Stevie's down for recording in general, she just doesn't want it to take up all of her time - as evidenced by her statements about the new tracks on a possible GH release. So I think she's malleable... they might be able to get her on board if they know how to flatter her in the right ways...
