For hardcore fans, the proof of Lindsey Buckingham’s pop genius isn’t Fleetwood Mac’s self-titled breakthrough or even its gazillion-selling follow-up Rumours, great as those are: It’s the 1979 double-album Tusk — a record that could never have satisfied the commercial and artistic expectations demanded of it, yet which sounds remarkably fresh, inventive and (surprisingly, considering the pressures the band was under inside and out) playful. On its best songs Buckingham gave punk and New Wave a coolly appraising glance and channeled some of their sharp edges into the band’s shimmering sound, and the element of surprise he brought to the group has been a hallmark of his subsequent solo career — from the irresistible ersatz-Beach Boys bounce of “Holiday Road” through last year’s Seeds We Sow, where he used his home-studio wizardry to concoct multi-guitar near-ragas, mellifluous folk, and pop nuggets Buddy Holly would’ve been proud to own. His current solo tour has gotten rave reviews in other cities; in the intimate setting of the sparkling restored Franklin Theatre, quickly becoming one of Middle Tennessee’s favorite music halls, this ranks as a must-see. Oh wow, I didn't realize Lindsey was playing the Arts Center in Carrboro! I used to go see my parent's friends band there when I was a teenager. It's a great space in a really cool little town. Why couldn't Lindsey have played at the Arts Center & Neighborhood Theatre in Charlotte when I lived in North Carolina?!

LINDSEY BUCKINGHAM It must be a bitch being Fleetwood Mac svengali Lindsey Buckingham. Like his idol and fellow pop perfectionist Brian Wilson, he must live up to his musical legacy. In Buckingham’s case, he domineeringly directed the Mighty Mac to towering commercial and creative success. At the same time, Buckingham must live down his personal legend — the obsessive coke-blown genius and abusive demon lover to Stevie Nick’s gossamer faerie queen. The evidence suggests the two cannot be separated. After all, Buckingham’s fidgety, Peruvian-powdered fingerprints are all over Mac’s diffuse and difficult masterpiece Tusk. The guitarist seems to have accepted this. He’s on board for Mac’s 2013 tour, while solo he’s mellowed and matured, reflecting a man at peace with his place in the pop firmament. True, his simple, emotionally resonant lyrics have grown more opaque and self-consciously poetic, but his inventively arranged pop 'n’ roll and baroque folk still engage while getting under the skin. It’s the mark of a master that he makes it all look easy. $50. 8:30 p.m. Neighborhood Theatre.
