Default Past & Present

It's been a slow year for me. Seen already are:

White Rabbits 3/22 Doug Fir Portland
Lindsey Buckingham 4/25/12 Aladdin Theatre Portland
Dita Von Teese 5/27/12 Aladdin Theatre Portland
Dan Hicks 6/8/12 Eugene (Had to eat those tix in lieu of an emergency trip to California =0(

Coming up for sure's:
Florence & The Machine 7/22/12 Troutdale Oregon
Bonnie Raitt 9/5/12 Eugene Oregon
My Life With The Thrill Kill Kult (ALWAYS wanted to see this band) Portland Oregon

Hopefuls:
Florence the night before inWashington
Madonna-October and despite her new album being utter crap, her shows are amazing
Dead Can Dance-8/10 Redmond Washington. The timing is horrible, but another band I've always wanted to see. Might try hardest to make this happen.

It's amazing. Skip Stevie...you have more money to see other acts. WHAT?! lol

I so hope Bonnie's Slipstream tour comes to the UK/Europe. She's fantastic live!

Really? I saw her in 1991 on the Luck of the Draw tour. It was just kinda meh for me. I much preferred her opener Chris Isaak.

I saw her in the UK on the Souls Alike tour and she was excellent. All depends I suppose.

Saw John Hiatt last Wednesday. He was great! Next gig, so far, is Deacon Blue in October. Bring it on!

I got to be "show electrician" for John once(I'm not an electrician, but know enough to wire their equipment into the service - so the promoter didn't have a pay a real electrician). His show was great. He's got some great songs!

Also, once at Indiana University, I was doing sound in this fraternity, and started talking to this kid about music.....he said,
"my uncle is in the music business, but none of my friends know who he is".
Yeah, what's his name?
"John Hiatt".
I was practically jumping up and down in excitement. Well "I" know who he is, and he's awesome!!!

I will just wait for the fairs to come up unless somebody pops up at one of the casinos.

The Big E in Mass has always have good artists pop in.Also the Durham fair here in CT.

AAAGHHHHH!!! That is f****g awesome. What tour was this on, or when was the show? Just trying to think what he'll have played...

I've been a fan of John for years. In fact, it was an ex girlfriend who got me into him, after I mentioned how much I love Bonnie Raitt. I had heard of him thanks to the several songs of his she's done but hadn't listened to him specifcally. That soon changed. I lost the girlfriend but kept the music. If I had to choose I'd go for the Crossing Muddy Waters album as my favourite but there are so many, many other great songs too. Slow Turning, Drive South, Tennessee Plates, Have A Little Faith, Lipstick Sunset, Memphis, Riding With The King, Child Of The Wild Blue Yonder... He's written several songs that Rosanne Cash covered too, who I absolutely love.

He really is fantastic. The setlist was brilliant.

So, any stories/encounters with John when you did that job? I'm guessing your job was done before he appeared though? Also, if you get such an opportunity again you have to let me know. Just for a spot of vicarious living you understand!

Gosh, you're taxing my memory. It's been about 10 years ago. Seems like it was shortly after Perfectly Good Guitar, if memory serves.

I got into John and Bonnie, around the same time. Both are the same sort of cool, if that makes sense!

Yeah, my job was pretty much finished by the time sound check was starting, although I hung around for it. Big bands carry their own "distro"(power distribution unit). Not to be too technical, but they're almost always "3 phase"(instead off being, for example, 220 volts, which is two legs of 110 volts, it's 3 legs of 110 volts). The problem is that unless a venue has 3 phase service(which many smaller ones don't), you have to "whittle down" wires as big as your thumb, to fit into a hole the size of your pinky. But since it's 3 phase, for one pinky hole, you have to fit TWO thumb size wires into one pinky hole. It's a f*cking bi*ch! Quite time consuming, and unless you bring heavy leather gloves, twisting around on the wires always leaves your fingers bloody!
How was that, for too much technical info!?

I'm such a freak, the strange things that I remember. I'd never seen it before, or since. John had his own personal air conditioner....a SMALL cube that sat right it front of his mic stand, blowing freezing a/c on him. I want one!!!! I've never seen one anywhere else. I'm.a.freak.

Not too technical at all. I'm a big geek.

I got into Bonnie a couple of years before John but as I said, I knew of John because of Thing Called Love etc. I'd say that although I do like John, I love Bonnie! Her stuff is just brilliant. All those 70s records are just effortlessly cool, not to mention her great run of records with Don Was in the late 80s/90s. I still like her most recent stuff, including Slipstream from earlier this year.

*looks up Bonnie tickets*

I didn't end up going to see Patti Smith, unfortunately, the girl I was meant to be meeting there who I knew from college deleted her facebook and went travelling in Morrocco so I couldn't get in touch with her. My anxiety decided I wasn't going alone so I just... didn't.

However, I did go to see Marina and the Diamonds earlier this month! They were brilliant and I'd strongly recommend going to see them even if you're only a casual fan!

If you're a member of Bonnie's mailing list then you can get today's presale, which I did, otherwise there's a Live Nation presale tomorrow and then general on sale Friday 9am. You'll have to let me know if you get a ticket for one of the dates!

Jealous!!! No chance of my long, long desired Nashville trip this year. I have some big news coming which will explain why... As for not seeing Lindsey, well there's nothing I can do about that after the cancelled dates from last year.

Hope you guys have an awesome time!
